THE Spirit
Moments to remember . . . moments of laughter
moments of wonder, moment of study, all are a part
of a school spirita spirit that has given students
moments to remember since Lanier opened its doors
back in 1914, and Miller in 1928.
This year, 1963-1964, students are no different.
They, too, will have their moments to remembera
football game and the cheering fans,
but it is more than a football game,
working hard for a club,
but it is more than a club,
senior plays and chemistry labs
but it is more than enjoyable work,
upholding tradition,
Seo Miele Mitel Micelsltitet
In all these there is an undefinable substance
School Spirit.
Students remember rivalry between the classes at
Miller and between the military companies at Lanier.
But throughout the rivalry, the thread of unity is
strong. The awed Sophomores, the working Juniors,
or the mighty Seniorsbig wheels or little wheels
leader or followersthey all work together to make
Lanier and Miller what they arethe best schools
in the world.

The spirit of Lanier High School is evident in our com
munity by the fact that many of our civic leaders are Lanier
High School graduates.
It is hoped that this spirit will be maintained by the Class
of 1964, as it has been in the past years by other graduating
classes

In his one year as principal of Lanier High School, Mr

Tom Porter has mastered the intricate business of managinc
Lanier. Every day he deals with students problems, supervises
school activities, and helps develop citizens. Most of all
encourages the students to uphold the fine school spirit that
reigns at Lanier. He, too, has a spirit that makes the students
proud,

job well done.
Spirit IN THE FACULTY
Reading, ritin, and rithmetic. Perhaps at some
schools teachers are just robots that teach the three rs.
Not so at Lanier. A teacher at Lanier is a person who takes
an interest in the students.
Besides staying up half the night grading papers, he
is there to help decorate for your Homecoming Dance. A
missed deadline? Theres the advisor doing his part to get
the paper to press.
You are not just a name or face to a teacher at Lanier
but an individual, with individual problems and ideas.
In the halls of Lanier friendly hellos are exchanged
between friendsteacher and student.
There'll be many a moment for Lanier boys to remem-
ber about the facultyfor each teacher possesses, too, the
School Spiritthe Spirit that dominates everyone who is a
part of Lanier High School.

The Sophomore seems to possess a kind of evident
School Spiritthe energetic kind that makes his section yell
the loudest at football games; the kind that makes his class
contribute most to the Red Cross and have more subscriptions
to The Poet Leader; for to the Sophomore these things are
the things that count.
As Sophomores, Lanier boys feel rather small and in-
signifant; but Lanier High would not have the School Spirit
that it does, were it not for the Sophomores.

Spirit IN
THE SENIORS
We are Seniors at last is the
cry of every upperclassman as
he reaches his final year. No
longer must he look up to others,
for he is now looked up to.
The Spirit of Lanier seems
more important somehow; and
everything must be the very best
because it will be his last.
Whereas the Sophomore deals
WILLIAM EDWARD YATES ROBERT YOUNG RICHARD MICHAEL ZEBELL in firsts, the Senior experiences
Ed Bob Ricky the many laststhe last Home-
coming, last pep rally, last
dance and the last exam.
Commencement arrives, and
after Commencement there are
bigger shoes to fill and new
roles to be played.
As we, the Class of 1964,
think back on our high school,
we say, Thank you Lanier High
School, for three wonderful
years. The Lanier Spirit shall
guide us always.

Spirit
IN
THE CLUBS
There is a club at Lanier for every
interest: career club, language club,
honorary club, and pep club. Each ones
main objective is to be a service to
Lanier High School and to further its
school spirit.
Clubs bring people together; it is
through clubs that friends are made as
they work hand in hand, side by side,
on a project. Teachers and students are
brought closer together through their
common interest in a club.
With thirty clubs and nearly twelve
hundred students, Lanier is always bust-
ling with activities.
Clubs are an important part of the
School Spirit of Lanier High School; it
is here that many find the outlet for the
Spirit they possess.

SPORTS
Spirit IN
THE SPORTS
Winning or losing, the Spirit is always present at
events in which the Lanier Poets are playing. The
Spirit displayed by the fans in the crowd, by the team
on the field, or by the coaches on the sidelinesthis
Spirit is never stilled.
We sometimes are prone to think that all the Spirit
is in the grandstand. This is not true. The real Spirit
is the kind that makes the player refuse to quit when
he is injured. It is that Spirit which makes the team
keep trying when they are losing. The Spirit is that
which gives the Poets the desire to play for his school
the desire to make Lanier the best in every way.
Good sportsmanship is not only a great desire to
win but also a gracious acceptance of a loss. It takes
a great deal of Spirit to fill this definition, but it is this
characteristic that has given Lanier Poets a reputation
of being good sports.

FOOTBALL
Capably led by Head Coach Jim Nolan and his
staff, the Lanier football team ended the 1963 season
with a mark of five wins, four losses, and one tie
The Poets packed fans and spectators into Porter
Stadium with each home appearance and provided then
with a rousing sample of high school football
Excellent coaching efforts, coupled high team spirit
and enthusiastic fan support, enabled the Poets of Lanier
to make the victory column and complete a season to be
proud of. Their performance this year will long be
remembered.

CAGERS ENCOUNTER
TOUGHEST FOES YET
The Lanier Poet 1964 Basketball Team added three new trophies to
the schools already crowded trophy cases. Led by Captain Big Al Ger
hardt, leading rebounder, and Captain Ken Bonifay, Region 1 AAA
leading scorer, Lanier won the Christmas Tournament and was second
in the Region 1 AAA Tournament. The Poets also were awarded the
Marc Demarest Memorial Trophy for winning the majority of games in

Spirit IN MILITARY
The Spirit so vital to Lanier High School is found at its height in
the Military.
The activities of the military department go on continuously. While
the Sponsor Parade, Military Ball and Competitive Drill are the big
events of the year, they are not the only things which make 1964 stand
out in our memories from all the other years. They occur annually;
but only this year did the Miller girls visit Lanier for the weekly pa-
rades. This was also a year for an excellent physical education pro-
gram with keen competition between companies.
These are the things we shall remember; but most of all we

IN THE ADVERTISEMENTS
To maintain harmony between the businessmen and the
rTaslole) MMi Me lore] Me) i every Administrator, Faculty member, -and
student of Lanier High School.
The location of the school in the center of the city makes
this absolutely necessary. If the members of Lanier High School
did not know they had the respect and admiration of the busi-
ness firms around us, the School Spirit would not be as great ;
as it is.
Much of this respect and admiration is come by naturally
as many of the business men and civic leaders are alumni of
Lanier.
The businesses in the city are forever being asked to buy
ads or to donate to school projects. They have always fully
cooperated a
In the many years that Lanier High School has existed, its
members have been able to stand proud and erect because
of the excellent Spirit between Lanier and firms in the city.
