Foreword

It's a distinctive year
It's the year 1958-59

It's the year we are seniors

the year about which we have long dreamed

And now that it is here, we are beginning to realize it has meant
that awards are given in recognition of outstanding

achievements

that increased emphasis is being placed on scholarship and

trained skills

that changes in our responsibilities and way of living are

natural and inevitable

that we are becoming keenly aware of problems facing a world

that is changing

And as we realize these things, we know that now, as never before, we need calm Pleme (oll warica
thinkers and level-headed, trustworthy leaders who will be guided by principles of justice and

fairness.

It's a big task!

MR. H. S. LASSETER

He walks straight . . . his step is firm . . . his head is high . . . his eye, penetrating
. . . his standards, hard and high . . . his methods, honorable . . . and his goal,
fixed and definite. To his school he has given himself, and so these characteristics
have become those of his school. To each of us at Miller he has lived these
qualities, and in us he has brought out and encouraged all that is straight and
strong and true. In deep ,appreciation for a man who lives his faith and gives to
us his philosophy and believes in us, we the seniors of 1959 dedicate this book

to you, our principal, Mr. H. S. Lasseter.

.

MR. A. J. SWANN

We, the 1959 senior class of Lanier High School, proudly dedicate this year-
book to Mr. A. J. Swann. We believe that he is a principal without peer in
loyalty and devotion to his school. For his hard work, his great zeal, his ad-
herence to Christian principles, aad his faith in us . . . we salute him. We know
that Lanier was chosen for the Bellamy Award not only because of the accomplish-

ments of its students and alumni, but also because of the excellence of its principal.

We are especially grateful for his firm guiding hand and his deep interest in

every part of the life of our school.

DR. MARK A. SMITH
1893-1958

Dr. Mark Smith, superintendent of Bibb County Schools from 1941 to 1958, was truly outstandinga man to be re-
membered and respected. As an administrator and educator, he was recognized and honored by those who had known

him and worked with him. As one vitally interested in civic activities, he was admired and loved. People knew Mark
Smith.

He was a man of deep convictions and a man of courage who dared to be true to what he believed possible and best.
He was far-sighted in his vision, but immediate and demanding in his expectations and actions. His appearance was strik-
ing; his manner, gracious and friendly; his personality, definite and dominant.

Varied and sincere were his interests. To those interests he gave of himself unselfishly and worked, not only for boys and
girls in schools and clubs, but also with adults in his church and in his civic clubs. Surely the memory of a life well-
spent and useful will never die.

Dr. Mark Smith was a great and outstanding man. His life and his use of his talents and abilities are a challenge to us.

Every year we are appreciative of the part that the members

of the board and the superintendent and his office staff

have in the education of young people in Bibb County.

This year we particularly appreciate their work, because
at the death of our superintendent, Dr. Smith, there were
many adjustments to be made. We know that under their
direction the schools will continue to be a source of pride

to all.

Stadent Councdl

Members of the club are composed of representatives chosen from each supervision. They are an active group,

do and it is this club that
plans assemblies, projects and activities for the student body.

The Executive Council is composed of presidents of the three classes and five seniors selected by the club president.
Here, proudly wearing identifying bands, Council members enjoy a quiet moment before their work begins at an

assembly.

aud Sher rctivities ...

Bonnie Sue Johnson proudly adds her supervisions
box to others for distribution to the needy in Macon.
This is one of the Club's big projects.

At the Christmas assembly, council members formed
a living Christmas tree on a stage filled with pres-
ents for children adopted by the supervisions for
Christmas.

The Beta Club's seventy-five members
are selected according to the three-fold
purpose of the club: to promote char-
acter, to cultivate leadership, and to
stimulate scholarship. Alice, Margaret,
and Mr. Lasseter welcome into the or-
ganization one of the lucky new mem-
bers, Kathy Kennedy.

The officers of Beta Club
do a difficult but outstand-
ing job. Those who lead the
club this year are Aileen
Arnold, historian; Brenda
Ward,, vice-president; Alice
Ramey, secretary; Margaret
Holloway, president; Sally
Murphey, treasurer; and
Mary Faye Martin, corre-
sponding secretary. Here
they review plans for the
coming year.

The Beta seniors, at the top, and Beta juniors below them, proudly wear their gold and black pins, signifying member-
ship in Beta. To be considered for Beta, a junior must be a member of the Honor Group and a senior must have a B aver-
age since her entrance at Miller Senior High. The girls meeting these requirements are then scored according to personality
charts, offices held and grades. The Faculty and the old members of Beta then vote on the list presented. Girls are elected
by a majority vote.

New members are making
their pledge to Beta.

The Dramatics Club
provides an opportuni-
ty to train and develop
dramatic talent and am-
bitions. Able members
may achieve member-
ship in the national
Thespian organization,
and it is from this Mil-
ler troupe that the offi-

cers are elected.

Standing around the Dramatics Club bulletin board are the club officers: Ann Mason, president; Kay Rad-
cliffe, treasurer; Allene Smith, vice-president, and Carol Anderten, secretary.

Dramatics Club

The members of the Dramatics Club are Miller girls who are interested in speech and dramatics.

The Miller Thespians, Troupe 643, are
outstanding members of the Dramatics
Club. Their main purpose is to develop a
spirit of active and intelligent interest in
dramatics. The Thespians are, Kay Massey,
