PRINCIPALS Mico oAGe

This book expresses, I believe, the spirit of Lanier better than
any other publication.

It records your activities, competitive and otherwise, your range
of interests, your sense of humor, and your pride in the school.

To the editors, business managers, and members of the Senior Class
and to all who had a hand in its theme and lay-out, let me add my con-
gratulations and best wishes. In years to come may you use it in re-
calling the memories of your happy high school days.

Aft

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Your Annual presents an accurate and interesting picture of your
school in all the phases of school activities. This year you have lived
up to the tradition of striving alweys to improve by producing a book
that is superior as an expression of the Miller spirit.

Congratulations are due to the Staff, the Students, the Advisors,
and the Faculty for your cooperation and industry, which are so necessary
in an undertaking that has produced such excellent results.

With best wishes for all who read this book, I hope it will always
recall to you the happy times you have had at Miller.

Seniors

We have chosen the inspiring towers of two historic colleges, Wesleyan
College and Mercer University, to introduce the Seniors. These towers well
symbolize the immediate goal of many of our graduates.

Wesleyan has the distinction of being the first chartered college in the
world to confer degrees upon women. Chartered in 1836, the school has
grown so steadily that in 1922 the college bought land for a Greater
Wesleyan to be located at Rivoli. The towers of the old college, today known
as the Wesleyan Conservatory of Music and Fine Arts, command a never-
to-be-forgotten view of a city known as the Heart of Georgia.

Mercer University, founded in 1833 at Penfield, Georgia, was named for
the Reverend Jesse Mercer, a Baptist minister and philanthropist. The
school was moved to Macon in 1871 and today, as in the years since its
founding, it is recognized as an outstanding small religious college. It is
the oldest theological institution in the South and the third oldest in the
United States.

Superla tives

We thought it most proper and fitting to introduce our Superlative section
with the home of Sidney Lanier, Macons distinguished citizen. We also
have captured for you some of the lovely spots inside the home, for we
took these pictures inside the Lanier Cottage.

Here on High Street in 1842 was born Macons most famous citizen, soldier,
musician, and poet. His Marshes of Glynn and many other immortal
lyrics have brought fame to Macon and to the South.

Macons two Boys High Schools are appropriately named in memory of the
great poet. In proper ceremonies he was named in 1945 to the Hall of Fame
of New York University.

Sports

We have selected two places, the Municipal Auditorium and Porter Stadium
to feature our Sport pages. Both are well known to citizens of Macon and
middle Georgia, for both are the scenes of events in the field of sports and

in that of entertainment of all kinds.

The Auditorium, completed in 1925, is an imposing building of limestone,
built in the Greek Renaissance Style. It boasts the largest copper dome in
the world. On the first floor the mural depicting the early history of Macon
is of interest to all.

The need for an athletic field was first felt by Mercer University officials
and several civic organizations. As a result of their efforts, the Stadium
was completed in 1925; since then it has been the scene of various kinds of
entertainments. It was named for Mr. James Hyde Porter, a leading in-
dustrialist and philanthropist.

Social Activities

Since this beautiful home during the mid-nineteenth century was the scene
of many outstanding social events, we have selected it to introduce our
sororities and fraternities. Built in 1842 by Judge Thaddeus Goode Holt,
it is one of the loveliest of the old colonial homes of which Macon is so
justly proud. Located on Georgia Avenue, it is one of the many beautiful
homes around Wesleyan. An excellent example of Greek Revival architec-
ture, it is now owned and occupied by Mrs. A. M. Peeler.

School Activities

The historic Macon Telegraph Building has long exerted a great influence
in molding school and community into a closer relationship. The Telegraph
has served as an inspiration to high school journalism, one of the more
important extracurricular activities represented in this section. Today, as
in 1826, the Telegraph has been printed continuously since its founding,
and many of the nations leading journalists and writers have begun their
careers on the staff of this paper.

Realizing the part that Fort Hawkins has played in the beginning and in
the development of the city of Macon, we have chosen this old blockhouse
to introduce Laniers Military Department.

Fort Hawkins was built in 1806 at the recommendation of Benjamin Haw-

kins, an outstanding Indian agent, on the old Ocmulgee Fields. Originally
it was used as a trade center and as a place for the transaction of business
between the Indians and Indian agents. Later it served as a supply base
and as quarters for armies being sent west or south in the war of 1812.
On the site of one of the original blockhouses, this well known replica of
the Fort Hawkins Blockhouse was reconstructed by the Nathaniel Macon
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
