rs! Gas Prices Got You Down
The cost of gasoline has risen significantly in recent years. Higher
gas prices have lowered employment, income, and spending. Most
everyone has been affected by the high prices in some sort of v y. Mar
families have had to limit their driving and spending fe ople are also
losing their jobs, because of the poor economy due to high price
Schools all across the country are being affected tremendously by the
high gas prices also. Teacher's are being laid off just to save money
Some schools have considered making shorter bus routes, but since
districts have little flexibility field trips and sports teams that take
buses on the road are becoming the targets. Schools districts are also
hae to cut back on heating and air conditioning. Prices for food are
also rising, meaning that school lunches are going up. These are just a
few of the things occurring due to high gas prices.
Most studies show that the cost of high gas prices is due to the cost
of crude oil followed by the cost of refining. Ethanol is one source that is
being used to help lower the amount of oil consumed while providing
cleaner-burning fuel. Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel made by
fermenting and distilling crops that have been broken down into simple
sugars. In the United States, ethanol is generally made from corn.
thanol is 10% of our gasoline we use today. In flex-fuel vehicles, an
alternative fuel E85 can be used. E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol
and 15 percent gasoline. If gas prices remain high, then ethanol will be
pushed to be used as an alternative fuel.
Crude prices have been falling because of declining gasoline usage.
That decline was reflected in a government report showing that
Americans drove 12.2 billion fewer miles in June of 2008 compared to a
year ago. If Americans continue to drive less, then gas prices will
continue to reduce and we can save money and help make a difference.

egetarian or Carnivore?
You may be a carnivore or a vegetarian, a sugar freak, or even a
meal skipper. But what and how you feed yourself will affect your
health for the rest of your life.
There is a small percentage of RHS students who choose to go
vegetarian . Most do so because of health reasons and some consider
eating meat just plain wrong. Meats and animal products can contain
growth horomones, sodium nitrites and nitrates, and antibiotics
Then there are the carnivores. They want meat every time they sit
down to a meal; it may be a small amount of pepperoni on a pizza at
lunch or a Triple Stacker from Wendy's
The snacking population at Rutland is in the majority. Many skip
breakfast at home and wind up eating from the snack machines in the
hallway. Others bring high sugar candy, fattening doughnuts, and
honey buns to start their day. Later, the sugar buzz is gone and they
need another pick up from cookies at lunch or a bag of gummy worms
stashed in their bookbag. These bad habits are hard to break ana
hard on your body too. Well, here's some good health suggestions to
help cure those hunger pains. Try water, and lots of it! Many times
you feel hungry, but you're really just thirsty. An apple in the morning
will help curb hunger and help keep your weight down.
For you vegetarians out there, get your protein from fish or nuts.
Carnivores, balancing things out with fruits and vegetables in your
diet. Try fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. ..
Think about small ways to improve your diet. Your body will thank you
for it!

Aothers Day Tornado
The year 2008 was a record year for extreme weather
events in our nation. This included a record number of
the following: tornadoes, floods, fires. and hurricanes.
On June 20 and 21, there were over 6,000 lightning
strikes in California, resulting in several thousand
blazes over a period of several months. Extremely dry
conditions caused the loss of thousands of acres of
forests, wildlife, and expensive homes. Severe breathing
problems came from the smoke-laden air. Local Link:
RHS Coach Johnson (Left) holds a lightning detector
which helps determine if lightning is striking too close
to a field when a game is being played.
Midwest flooding caused several major rivers to
overrun tremendous areas. The flooding caused loss of
lives and property in over a dozen states during the
2008 year.
And here in Macon we lived through the infamous
Mothers Day tornado, which touched down early that
unday morning, causing millions in damage to portions

educe, Reuse, Recycle "sf
It's Really,Really Easy! -
Almost everywhere you look these days there seems to be a
reminder to "Go Green". The all important chant to remember
when going green is: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! Many common
goods around your house are easy to recycle.. Every other week,
paper, plastics and metal items are picked up by a truck
designed for this purpose
Newspapers and mailers, anything with a triangular recycle
symbol, and glass and cans can fill up to over flowing the
recycling container from a typical Bibb County household. .
According to a survey given to RHS students , over 90% of
everyone surveyed thought that recycling was important. But
when asked if they recycled,
over 50% admitted that they did not.
. Another way we can help reduce is by simply using less. New
technologies have helped us reduce. Low flow toilets, which use a
lot less water than our normal toilets, and halogen light bulbs,
which shine brighter than regular bulbs and use less electricity
are great examples of things you can use to help reduce. At
Rutland this year, a way we are reducing is through the new
electrical hand driers in the restrooms. It replaces the
thousands of paper towels that we use which helps cut back on
garbage. The third and final way that we can help is by reusing.
Instead of throwing away certain items, try to find other uses
for them or use them again and again. Rechargeable batteries
are one of the best items out there that can help us cut back on
hazardous waste. They canbe reused numerous times and when
they can't be charged anymore, you can recycle them.
Recent changes in Board of Education policy have required
schools to use less energy in heating and cooling classrooms.
Workers came during December and removed half of the
lightbulbs in hallways to cut energy costs. And the vacant
trailers on our campus are being removed to other sites for use.
These changes onall Bibb County school campuses will result
in major savings in money and energy.

Feeling clean and smelling good are of great importance to Kutland teens. But
have you ever thought that great clean feeling could be harmful to your health?
Many cosmetics, soaps, and shampoos that we use contain chemicals called
phthalates. These chemicals can cause liver, kidney, and even lung damage!
We're always trying to protect our bodies from bacteria by using antibacterial
soaps. Did you know a compound in antibacterial soaps, such as hand sanitizer, can
cause just as much damage to our bodies as the germs we're trying to fight? Well
it's true! The compound can disrupt the thyroid hormone function and lead to early
puberty.
Carcinogenic...do you know what it means? Chemicals that are carcinogenic
cause the big C word. . .Cancer! These carcinogenic chemicals are in everything
from make-up to lotions. Coal-tar chemicals have been tested on animals and are
found to be carcinogenic. These chemicals are in the dark color hair dyes we use to
dye our hair and the dandruff shampoos we use to treat dandruff. So here's the bad
news, almost every product we use contain chemicals that are harmful to our
health.
But here's the good news! There are products that are safe for you and our
planet. Revert Eco. is an earth friendly perfume sold at Rue 21. It smells great while
remitiding you to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Burt's Bees products do not contain
any chemicals that are harmful to your health. The ingredients are all natural!

because "it's cheaper than other
places" and it makes their look
unique.
Fashion, especially among high school students, is one of the
most creative ways to express yourself. However, your sense of
style not only affects how others see you and how you see
yourself; But it also greatly and (in most cases ) negatively
affects the world we live in.
It's really not hard to stay fashionable while being eco-friendly.
Buying vintage and used clothing from yardsales and thrift
stores gives you a unique look, while reducing the use of landfills.
Buy clothes made with organic materials such as hemp, linen,
organic wool , organic cotton, and bamboo; These materials are
better for the environment because they're grown without the
use of unhealthy pesticides and insecticides. They also help
preserve land and soil. Look for clothes that are colored using
natural dyes that are much healthier for you; the production of
unnatural dyes can produce toxic pollution. These are just a few
ways to decrease your daily impact.
More and more designers and stores are doing their part to go
green ; making it easier for people to find eco- friendly fashions.
From big designers, like Marc Jacobs, to stores like Pacsun,
Gap, and American Apparel, you're sure to find something to fit
your own unique sense of green style.

After an entire Summer of sleeping in until noon, high school
students struggle adjusting to their "Back to School
schedules. One habit that teens pick up is gulping down coffee
first thing in the morning. Coffee is a caffeine-based stimulant
that restores, strengthens, awakens, and invigorates. Most
people are not aware that there are a few simple ways to turn
your coffee drinking routine into a "Green" routine. An obvious
choice would be purchasing organic coffee beans- which are not
only good for the Earth but also better for your halth. Unlike
most coffee beans, organic coffee is grown without harmful
pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Another eco-friendly
solution is shade-grown coffee, which is cultivated under a tree
canopy opposed to cutting down large amounts of trees and
destroying natural habitats along with them. You can also stay
green by choosing filters made with unblached papers, reusable
cotton/hemp, or gold.
It doesn't take much to help out your planet, just simply alter
your daily routines. You don't have to spend tons of money ona
to cut down and clear away trees or forests

Spring of (08 brought a fresh face to head Rutlands athletic department. Coach George Collins,
along with six other coaches from Houston County High, is our third Athletic Director in six years.
One great idea Collins introduced is the season ticket. Purchased by students for $50.00, it
allows attendance to all home sporting events from fall football to spring soccer.
Our new coaches appeared on the Rutland scene about the time our nation's economy began its big
downturn. When asked how he expected the economic troubles and high gas prices would affect the
fall season sport events, Coach Stewart commented that he had not heard of any restrictions on
bus usage. "Players are going to need more room after the game. They need to stretch out on the bus
to prevent cramping. We need to have the right amount of room and number of buses," he said.
Coach Tony Jones, new football and men's head soccer coach expressed another need- greater
support from fellow Rutland students at games. "More student fans at games and more pep in the
crowd" is what he feels will increase the quality of athletic performance.
Coach Doug Johnson commented that being at Rutland reminded him of his early years at
Houston County High School 15 years ago. Johnson predicted a similiar steady climb in
improvement in Rutland's athletic success.
We look forward to the new leadership in our athletic department. Stability has been an issue in
the past, and the transplant of these "HoCo coaches will hopefully be the answer to this need.

Once again the Lady Cane Softball team
experiences extreme success as region
champs. Encountering a loss of many
talented senior players from the previous
season and entering a new region with
unfamilar teams did not hinder the spirit or
the record of our Lady Canes
With the final tally of a 13-2 region record,
these talented women dominated on the
field. The lady canes lost five senior starters,
one of which was the star pitcher for the last
four years. Sophomore Brittany Middleton
stepped up to the plate to fill the place of
their field pitcher. Even though the overall
record was not as good as the year before,
the team really stuck together and
performed exceptionally well. With a new
defense and new leaders the Lady Canes
finished a great season.

ross Country Team Shows Endurance
Cross Country is a challenging sport that takes a large amount
of determination. Thanks to the dedicated Coach Hickey from
Skyview, our Cross Country team reached for the stars and
succeeded. At Rutland our boys Cross Country team finished
5th in the Region and the girls finished 6th in the Region. [i
There were 6 regular meets, 3 invitational, and 1 region. For
the boys; brothers Mickel and Michan Craig had a great
season. Mickel placed 15th in the region and Michan placed
16th. Both received medals at the Northeast invitational.
With all the excitement for the boys team, two promising
runners were injured early in the season, John Harvey and
Brian Moore. For the girls; Kendra Grant was 1st place in 6 of
the meets for our team. She placed 31st in the Region and
received a medal at the Warner Robins invitational.
Trey Simpson, 11th, says he enjoys the long distance running
and thinks Cross Country is a very rewarding sport. Practice
involves running three and a half miles everyday to increase
endurance. And like most other sports , cross country
members also lifted weights to increase muscle and help burn
fat for a leaner body.

olf Season Begins with a Snowy Start
The 2008-2009 golf season was filled with high
expectations. RHS has moved to a new region that will
present us with new challenges Coached by Mr. Barrett,
and led by John Barfield and Jonathon Rowe, the golf
team works year round to ready themselves for the
rigors of the season.
Barrett says "If we can read the "greens" and make
clutch shots we will celebrate a 4-AAA championship
this season." To have set a strategy is one thing. To
remember and use it under stress will prove to be the
real test.

Record First Place in County Achieved by
Elite Lady Canes Basketball Team
From Final Eight to Top Four- Journey Worth Traveling
It's a long journey from first game to THE
FINAL FOUR. But that's exactly where the Lady
Canes found themselves the second week of
March.
Led by veteran basketball coach, "Silent Storm"
Johnny Dixon, the team has shown poise,
teamwork, and humility.
When asked how she prepares for a state title
competition, Kendra Grant said "We try to keep
focused. We always pray before our games".
Tae Smith commented that prayer has always
been a part of the Lady Canes
pre-game preparation and success.
Manager Chiquella Taylor says,"! pray everyday
for God to help us out -hustle more than the
other team and keep our stress level down.
The team faced the Carrolton Trojans at the
Macon Centraplex on Friday March 13 at four
o'clock.
First on the schedule, the girls were pumped by a
walk-through send off at school prior to leaving
for the tournament.
Coach Dixon keep his game face on, and the
school honored the team with our first:"Green
Out".
First quarter began with nervous energy from
both teams. The athletes settled down, and it
appeared this was to be a well-balanced match.
And it was, initially.
Canes were leading by nine points during the high
point in second quarter. But high scorer Kendra
Grant(14 points,) began limping with a serious
stress-fracture injury and Tae Smith (13
points) showed fatigue from the aggressive
Carrolton team.
The Lady Canes fought well, but the scoreboard
told the final story: Rutland, 51, Carrolton 68.

Color Guard
Color Guard is the combination of flag core and dance team. Rutlands Color
Guard serves as a visual to the songs that our band plays. They entertain us
and their big smiles lift our spirits when we are down at halftime during the
football games. Along with the band, they enter competitions and are judged
by their performance. Have you ever considered what it takes to be in Color
Guard? " It takes hardcore determination and the drive to do it", says Anna
Suber, captain.
In order to be the best they can be, Color Guard must practice frequently.
During football season, practices occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays from 3 to 5. At practice the team starts off stretching and
talking about their day to help release any stress they may have. After
stretching its time to practice routines. The routines are very important to
the success of the Color Guard so they give them their all.
64
There are many advantages and disadvantages that result from involvement
in Color Guard. For Anna Suber, the best part about Color Guard is being the
captain. All in all the most rewarding thing is being on the field at halftime,
looking up at the crowd, knowing they are watching you and all of the precise
movements that should be perfectly coordinated. |n order to have that
rewarding feeling, Color Guard has to be ready.
The amount of time it takes to get ready is the biggest disadvantage for the
girls The make-up, uniforms, and most importantly, the hair take time to be
consistent and just right. The rushing can be extremely stressful, but this
doesn't hold back the dedicated team members that make our Color Guard
what it is; the best thing since toasted bread!

"Green Staffers Produce Great Book
We started out as a very GREEN staff- all but two
were brand new to journalism. We quickly agreed
that the "Green" theme would work on many levels
for our book.( Marla Sapp's idea). We chose green
topics that would apply to our students. Each
staffer researched that topic and created a double
page spread for the theme section. Former RHS
teacher, Ms. Moore along with Mrs. Barfield spent a
record six and a half hours designing the cover. Mrs.
Paula Bennett meticulously recorded all the money
for ad sales, senior ads, and yearbook payments.
Yearbook staffers took most photos,. but we also
were thankful for contributions from
Ms. Childers, Mr. Pitts, and Mr. Barrett.
Ed McConnell and Helene Cox , Lifetouch
representations were life savers upon several
occasions.
68
All of the staff worked hard, but some came
through with large numbers of pages and really put
forth a great deal of effort. They include: Jennifer
Bilow: Theme Editor ,Marla Sapp:Ads Editor,
Melissa Miller Sports Co-Editor and Clubs Editor,
Brett Combs: Co-Sports Editor, Jocelaine Presen
Dieu, Breigh Findlay, and Cooper Lowe, for classes
section and various other well-done sections.
We thank all of the students and teachers who
gave us quotes, filled out questionnaires, and let us
take their photo. We did this for you, our school.
We hope it brings you great memories and causes
you to consider the greener way of treating our
planet.

Creative Students Design Sets
What would the three productions of the Drama Club be with out a set?
Set designers avoid the spot light, but their contribution is vital .
samantha Chubbuck, Delaney Connell, and Geordi Couto spent after school
hours designing and painting the sets for Crenshaw Family Reunion, Who's
Dying to be a Millionaire, and Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat productions. Delaney
said, I'm a very artistic person and | enjoy being able to contribute to the
productions without actually being on stage. "The backdrops are painted on
large hinged structures, and once one play is over, they are primed and
redesigned for the next production. With a tight budget, this is the most
economical and environmentally beneficial way to reuse and recycle
materials.

Principal Ms. Gilbert is in her second yea
Kutland's helm.
Establishing a legacy of accomplishments,
she has begun the School of Internationa

She can also be credited with finishing the
Senior Courtyard. Facing obstacles such
as having to add a second pernanei for
saftey and dealing with French drain issues,
she led the school in raising t ae 15,000

youngest teachers on the block. But after collecting our teacher surveys, we
found that two of our seasoned faculty members actually did the most to
help our environment. Both Ms. Amos and Ms. Folendore recycle rainwater
plastic and glass. When asked what being green means to them, they Say
that it means leaving our earth better than you found it. They grow some of
their own food and avoid pesticides. Ms. Amos cannot stand contributing to
landfills. She actually donates the styrofoam that our computers are
packaged in to the Fine Arts department. So why do they feel it's important
to recycle? Ms. Amos says "It's foolish not to." Ms. Folendore teaches her
biology students to avoid polluting by assigning experiments that show the
dangers of runoff in lake water. Ms. Amos and Ms. Folendore know that
everything they do is making a difference and thanks to them, our earth just
might last a little bit longer. The three R's are reduce, reuse, recycle

We have added a few new faculty members to RHS,
but none are what you might call "green".
Here's a few facts about some of our excellent faculty additions.
Ms. Henderson (right) hails from Columbus where she taught at Harris
County Middle School. She really prefers teaching
Algebra | and Il. Her hobby is traveling- she has visited the
"Wild, Wild West of Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. The furthermost north she
has been is Maine.
Mrs. Graham, right below, is new to our Media Department.
She has been a great addition to the brilliant duo of Ms. Childers and Mrs. P.
Bennett. Parker Smith says that Mrs. Graham has a sweet personality and
cares for the students like a second mom.
Ms. Jukes, who attended Stratford Academy and UGA travels from
Howard High to Rutland each day to teach French students.
She says " The gas seems to leak out of my car like water, but it breaks
up my day and I really enjoy getting to know so many teachers and
students.
Her favorite French foods are cheese and tarts, and her favorite French
place is Montpellier, where she studied while in college.

It seems everybody knew Alesa and thought a lot of her. Her friend
Samantha Viator says that "Alesa was a very outgoing girl-always
happy and cheerful. She could always bring a smile to your face.
Casey Bradshaw said that "Alesa was a wonderful singer and was
good at dancing. She loved acting".
Many people commented that Alesa could always bring a smile to
your face. She was friends with everybody, said Casey and she
smiled a whole lot.
Mr. Hernandez recalled that Alesa sang first soprano in the
Women's Chorus. Even though there is a strict no-gum rule in
chorus, Alesa managed to sneak gum in during practice several
times! He said that she was always cheerful and bubbly.
Alesa cheered for Rutland Middle School and made the senior high
school squad her freshmen year at Rutland High School. She was
very active in Liberty United Methodist Church, and sang in the
Youth choir there.
Our memory of Homecoming Week will always remind us of Ales' great
smile and her exuberance for life. It is good to have this happy
reminder of her as a classmate, a student and a friend.

Spirit week is one of the highlights of
high school. Most students plan what
they will wear, how they will dye their
hair and paint their faces up weeks in
advance.
Then the good-natured competition
between classes begin as students plot
to design the coolest hall decor for the
competition. Lots of orange and green
paint, streamers, and hot glue is applied
to the ceiling, walls, lockers and even
floor. Cane Spirit is contagious.

Four years of hard work, stress, and most importantly, dedication has
finally proven to be worth it after all. All the late night studying and giving
up weekends has paid off for Tyler Sullivan, Valedictorian and Umar
Taskeen, Salutatorian.
Ever pictured yourself in cap and gown at graduation, stepping up to the
microphone, and delivering an inspiring speech recorded on numerous
camcorders and memories of fellow graduates? For Tyler Sullivan and
| Umar Taskeen this dream is a reality. They have worked towards this goal
with every novel read, each homework assignment turned in on time, and
every research project edited and reedited for perfection.
The valedictorian is the student with the highest rank in his or her
graduating class who gives the valedictory speech. Valedictorian Tyler
Sullivan says, "It feels good to know that all my hard work has finally paid
off. I'm very happy to be number one in my class. It's an awesome
| feeling." He also says to the upcoming students who aim for this honor
"Do all of your work, its not always about being the smartest, it's the
amount of effort you put into your schoolwork."
The salutatorian is the student with the second highest rank in his or her
graduating class who gives the salutatory speech. Umar Taskeen says,
"I'm proud of myself for reaching this title. When first found out, | was
excited but disappointed by coming so close to being Valedictorian." He
advises the upcoming students to"Pay attention, do your work, and you'll
be fine.".
Tyler and Umar are hardworking, dedicated students who deserve the
honor , recognition, and scholarships that accompany this acheivement..

Turning 18 means a big step: changing from a child into an adult. Added
opportunities open new doors for young Americans-the most important being the
responsibility of voting.
Many Rutland students voted in this historic election.
Others used the chance to join the armed forces and even get a tattoo or two.

We spend our first 17 years
looking forward to turning 18.
We envision this magic number
to be ultimate freedom and a
huge step into adult hood.
New choices entice us.
Many young adults chose body
piercings and tattoos.
Most of the tattoos or
piercings have significance,
others don't. Let's not lie-
some of us do it just
because we can. A good
number of the class of 2009 at
Rutland participates in this
eighteen ritual". Some of our
students are all for it and
others carefully contemplate
the future with a permanent
skull tattoo on aging 7O-
something skin..

Many choices are avaliable to our

Carlton Swayne has chosen to enter into
he Air Force. Carlos bls has decided
that he will attend college for four years
and then join the Marine
orps

unny Senior Moments at RHS
In high school you have many experiences;
some embarrassing and maybe even a few
that make you "roll on the floor laughing".
Your funniest experiences in high school
will last a lifetime while the most
embarrassing fade away. You start from
tripping up the stairs and end up laughing
about it on the way down. When high
school first starts, everything you do is
embarrasing. Then you learn that it's not
about worrying if you will make a fool of
yourself but what you can do to make it
into a good time.
High school doesn't last forever so just
forget about how embarrassing it can be
and make it worth living! A few of the
seniors here at Rutland live for making
high school the greatest time of their
lives. Everything they do is a "roll on the
floor laughing" experience. Your junior and
senior year is when you realize that it
won't be long until you're thrown out into
the real world where being serious is
required. So laugh it up and enjoy it while
you can.
During spirit week they were playing
music in the lunchroom . One day |
started dancing on the lunch table,
having a good time, and this boy got on
the table and started dancing too and he
went to jump off the table and it split
half!
It was so funny!
