The staff of 2003-2004 has worked very hard
to put together this years 50th volume of the
Growl. The computers gave us somewhat of a
bard time but nonetheless our staff stuck with it.
This years staff consisted of the following
students -Seniors: Anna Elder, Katie Forehand,
Dextor Gore, Abbie Jones, Lacey Jordan, Maggie
Moughan, Christa Vongsavanh and Krista

This years Spirit Week was
very exciting. The days for this
year were: Twin or Hero Day,
Wacky Day, Red, White, and Blue
Day, Decade Day, and Purple and
Gold Day. Most of the student
body and even some of the
teachers participated in Spirit
Week. The parade, held Thursday
afternoon, was a success as usual.
A great deal of hard work and
dedication was seen in the
beautiful floats. The Senior float
won the Greyhound Award and
the French Club won Best Design.
Thanks to all for a great Spirit
Week.

Homecoming Court
Spirit Week was filled with excitement and anticipation as the
week came to an end with our annual homecoming game. The half-
time show was one of the highlights of the evening which featured
representatives from campus clubs and organizations, as well as
representatives chosen by each class. The crowd was on their feet with
the announcement of our homecoming court -2nd runner-up, Miss
Ashley Appling, 1st runner up Miss India Dennis, and the crowning of
the 2003-2004 Homecoming Queen, Miss Melissa Hill.

opportunity to worship God
among their peers. Each month,
at both 7:15 and 8:00 am,
students have the chance to sing,

This years one act play - Winners - was
certainly a winner. After a performance at
JCHS, the cast and crew were off to region
competition. Tech crew members Stephanie Van
Wagoner and Emily Hussey made sure the actors
had everything they needed and kept the show
flowing smoothly, while Ms. Scamihorn directed.
While at region, they swept the awards
ceremony, with the play itself taking first place
and Johnna Terrell and William Tanner
receiving Best Actress and Best Actor,
respectively. At the State Competition one week
later, Winners captured a very respectable
fourth place. The cast and crew, along with Ms.
Scamihorn, truly represented Jones County High
School well this year. 27
Costa Rica
On April 4" 2003, Mrs. Bowden, Mrs.
Perry, her daughter Gena, Curtis Duke,
and Katrina Mitchell arrived in San Jose,
the capital of Costa Rica. The group
checked into the Arenal Vista Lodge.
From their rooms, they could see the
Arenal Volcano and at night, they would
watch lava come out of the volcano. They
left the Arenal and went to Monteverde.
To get there they rode horseback four
hours through the rainforest, over
mountains, and across a river. The main
places they visited were: Arenal Volcano,
Monteverde Cloud Forest, and the beach
at Puntarenas. One of the most fun parts
of the trip was the fact that there was a
birthday to be celebrated, Gene Perrys
fourteenth, to be exact. It would be
celebrated Costa Rican style. Before
lunch, the group surprised her by
cracking eggs over her head. Then, after
dinner, they presented her with a cake.
But theres a twist. In Costa Rica, you
take the first bite of the cake without
using any utensils or your hands. You
just bend over and dig in! When Gena
did so, the group shoved her face in the
cake! Mrs. Bowden spoke for everyone
when she said, This trip was the best
experience of our lives.
England
After an overnight flight from
Atlanta, the group landed tired, but ready
to see London,Europes largest city.
While on the tour, the group took in two
plays in the West End, the Broadway of
London. They traveled to Stratford to see
the birthplace of Shakespeare. They also
attended a workshop taught by a
Shakespearean actor who instructed
them in the techniques used to write and
perform plays of that time. They then
went on a tour of the Globe Theatre where
most of Shakespeares plays were
performed. The group also toured the
British Museum and the Tower of London
where the Crown Jewels of England are
housed. The group traveled to Oxford
University, Stonehenge, and Bath to see
the Ancient Roman Baths as well. After a
fun filled week in the Mother County all
were ready to return home to America.
The travelers included Christy Andrews,
B.J. Knight, Elizabeth Keith-Olsen, Trent
Mosley, James Newberry, Andrew Pope,
Sara Pope, and Ms. Whatley.
White Christmas
The Class of 2004 hosted the 34th annual
White Christmas program on Tuesday, December
16,2003. It was a night full of laughs, excitement,
joy, and fun for all who participated and attended.
All proceeds from the event will go to various
charities in Jones County to help out with presents
and food for young children and families this
holiday season.The Senior Class would like to
thank everyone for their participation and support
in making this years White Christmas such a
success.

The Greyhounds worked hard this
year under the leadership of new head
coach Bill Young. Coach Young has been
an assistant coach at JCHS for 4 years
before becoming head coach. Even though
the Hounds ended with a 2-8 season, they
learned how to work together to achieve
their goals. There seems to be bright
futures in store for the Greyhounds,

team had a very successful season.
Our J.V. Football coaches are
dedicated to preparing the team for
the hard work it takes to play Varsity

This was a learning year for our ninth grade team. The
players played well this year and showed a lot of hard work and
dedication throughout the season. They are all looking forward
to playing on the Junior Varsity team next year. The coaches

The JCHS Varsity Football
Cheerleaders are a very dedicated
group of individuals. The squad
began this year by attending
summer camp at the University of
Georgia where they received the
award of Top Team. They started
practicing in August, continued
through football season, and ended
in February with competition
season. They are coached by Miss
Leah Tucker. This years captains
were Jill Tribble and co-captian
Ashley Roberson.
The squad is composed of Rebecca

The Marching Greyhounds had a great year which
Marching saw some new changes. Almost doubling in size, the
band competed in AA division at Tifton and Warner
Robins. One of the highlights included winning The
Mayors Cup at the Spirit of the South Marching Festival
for receiving all Superior ratings from all judges in all
categories. Mr. Lundin particularly enjoyed the October
31st game in Augusta when the band members all wore
Halloween costumes.

The 2003-2004 dance team started the year with 11
seniors gone and 11 rookies. Kicking is a skill that requires
concentration, flexibility and much desire. With most of
our experienced dancers gone, we were a little worried.
However, under the constant attention of our captain,
Amanda Parrish, and co-captain, Nicole Fincher and Alveta
Summers our 03-04 dance line became a powerhouse on
the field. Seniors Crystal Reynolds and Brittany Tharpe
were able to assist the officers in developing some of our
most difficult choreography to date. We kicked our way to
Best of Class at both competitions and Best Overall in
Warner Robins. The dancers on this team are a dedicated
group of young women that work as hard as any other
athlete on this campus. Mrs. Roberts feels blessed to be
surrounded by such strong character and ability, and
cant wait until next year!

Fastpitch Softball had
another eventful season this
year. Mrs. Harrington, Miss

dedicated to these girls from
early summer until October.
These ladies had an oustanding
ist place at the Evans
Invitational and finished 3rd
within their region. This team
showed a great deal of potential
and will do great thing in the

experience for both the players and the first year coach, Miss
Wellborn. Each young lady contributed a great amount to the
team and will hopefully do the same for the varsity team in the

The girls had a

under the Peet
leadership of
Coach Bradham. They ended with a 5th
place finish at the Region meet in
Greenbriar. The girls were few in number
but strong in spirit. Senior Anna Elder was
a leader and motivator for the rest of the
team. The Juniors made up the core of the
team. They were Christy Andrews, Kristen
Clements, Whetherly Peacock, Sara Pope
and Jennifer Weidner. Congratulations on

The Jones County Wrestling team returns 8 lettermen this
year, Josh Sargent, Glenn Sargent, Thomas Childers, Jonathan
Lord, Nate Carr, Frank Pittman, James Lumley, and Robert
Bullington. With the addition of some key newcomers, Coaches
Daniel Lewis and Paul Stokes hope to improve on last years 3rd
place finish where Glenn Sargent placed 2nd and Childers, Lord,
Carr, and Josh Sargent finished ist. Carr also looks to improve
on his finish of 3rd in state as a freshman.
The outlook is good, says Lewis. We hope to contend
for an area title this year, depending on how some of the new
wrestlers improve as the season progresses.
Wrestling is a physical sport that demands strength ,
endurance, flexibility, and technique. The wrestlers compete for
20 days from December until the end of February, including a
tournament almost every weekend.

The JCHS JV Competition Cheerleaders had a
great season this year. They are a dedicated
and determined group of individuals. Through
many ups and downs this season, they have
managed to come through stronger and more
determined than ever. They competed at the
Jones County, Washington County, Mary
Persons, and Warner Robins competitions,
improving with each performance. Captains
Sarina Holloway and Faren Smith; Squad
members are Claire Childs, Jessica Denny,
Megan Fountain, Lauren Harvey, Kellie
Hatfield, Jennifer Kitchens, Shannon Kitchens,
Kati Leslie, Hannah Moon, Jennifer Moore,
Jessica Relinski, Adrien Sowell, Shandi Stupak
and Donald Jones.
Boys Varsity Basketball
The 2003-2004 Greyhounds team has a
mixture of experience and youth. While we have
five seniors, six juniors, and three
sophomores,many of these players do not have a
great deal of varsity experience. The teams
character and attitude has been good and their
work ethic improves daily. Four of the five
seniors have been in our program for all four
years of high school. We are extremely proud of
them for this accomplishment. The players
pictured above are Robert Welton, Reggie
Henderson, Wilmer Gray, Petras Balocka,
Develle Miller, Reggie King, Tray Glover, Aaron
Patterson, Joseph Rawlings, Jonathan Ross,
Keith Barger, Billy Stubbs, and Roy Roberson.

This years Varsity Girls Basketball team is
young but full of enthusiasm and love for the
game. They are working hard to improve
their skills game by game. With the
experience gained this year, the Lady
Hounds have a bright future ahead of them.

The Boys J.V.Basketball team
played an exciting, fast-paced, hard-
nosed brand of basketball. The
seasons outlook was very
encouraging. The players must play
with an intensity that matches their
talent level to be called successful.

J. V. Girls Basketball
The Junior Varsity
Girls team was very
young and inexperienced this year. The players worked very hard and
improved 100% from the beginning of the season. They supported each other
and had good attitudes. The team was successful in the post position with Aja
Parker and Brittany Davis. On the wings, the team depended on Brittany
Odom, Melissa Andrews , Kashaita Burney and Leshia Greene. The other
players, including Mattie Dewberry, Octavia Card, andEbony McCrae also
played an important role in the teams success. A big thanks goes out to all
these young ladies for their hard work. The J. V. team was given much
support by their coach, Ms. Dianne Puckett, as well as the varsity girls team
and their coach, Coach Greene. The patience and dedication of Coach Puckett,
the varsity girls and Coach Greene helped to make the J. V. program a success.
Varsity Basketball
This Years Varsity Basketball Cheerleading
Squad has worked very hard to prepare for their
season. They attended summer UCA cheerleading
camp at Jekyell Island, Georgia. They have also
prepared for their season by practicing every
afternoon and also painting signs to show their
school spirit. This years squad was lead by their
captain Katie Forehand. The squad consisted of five
seniors, three juniors, three sophmores and one
freshman. Their appreation goes to Ms. Janes for
taking on such a big responsibility and helping out.

Academic
Team
The Academic Team consists of
students who have been selected for
their expertise in certain areas. They
compete in quiz bowl competitions
that test their knowledge in academic
fields such as Social Studies, Science,
Math, Literature, and Fine Arts. The
format of these competitions involves
a series of questions using lock-out
buzzer systems. JCHS hosted the
state-level Junior Varsity
Tournament in the Spring of the year.

The Chorus has 31 members this year
and most were new singers. Mr. Lundin
was pleased with the progress they made.
The fall semester finished with a great
} Christmas concert in the auditorium. The
students surprised me by performing better
than they ever had that night. I enjoy
directing music the most when that kind of
thing happens, said Mr. Lundin. Thanks to
everyone for their contributions to Chorus.
Drama club consists of
many different people who have
a common interest- drama.
Drama isnt just about acting -
its also about the lights, the
props and the costumes. The
people in Drama Club work
together to make every play the
best it can be. This years club
did many successful plays
including Winners, which won
Region and went on to a 4th
place finish at State
Competition.

DECA is specifically designed to provide
activities for students to learn marketing,
management, and entrepreneurial skills that
will prepare them to pursue a career in the
field of marketing. DECA members become
more aware of the value of community service;
participate in local, state, and national
competitive events program that showcases
student skills and allows for interaction with
the business community; further develop
occupational skills needed for careers in
marketing, management, and
entrepreneurship; serve in leadership roles;
and develop a greater understanding of our

FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America.
It is a national organization that consists of individuals
seeking ways to develop competitive, aggressive
leadership skills. From meetings to current events to
competitions, members are constantly dedicating
themselves to this association. FBLA members turn their
ambitions and capabilities into financial success and
professional recognition, through community activities,
competitions, and leadership workshops.
The Jones County FFA participates
in Beef and Dairy Cow Shows, land
judging contest, plant sales, and many
other events throughout the year. The
FFA is thankful for all the time and hard
work the members put into their work.

the Senior 4-H Club.
Senior 4-Hers participate
in many activites such as
district, state, and
national conferences,

life, but 4-H is not all
work. We love to have fun
by doing service projects
and other entertaining
activities.
The French Club participated in
many events this year. One was a
civic project where they painted
faces at the football games and
also at Gray Elementary. They
also won Best Design float in the

organization that brings together Christian
athletes and other members of the student body
to fellowship in Christ. This is a student led
fellowship. Students learn how to be like Christ
through activities that affect them in their daily

Beta Club is deemed one of the most
prestigious clubs at JCHS. Members of the
Beta Club must have a 92 average for 2
semesters and then a 90 average for the
following semesters. The Beta Club does
recycling in the school and provides snacks
during the graduation test. The club also
attends the Beta Convention in Atlanta to
compete in various competitions. The

Skills USA
This year, the Career and Technical Department and Skills USA welcomed the arrival of two new teachers.
Mr. Bradham, Mass Media, and Mr. Delong, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Mr. Bradham helped
with computer contests such as graphic communications, advertising design, and 3-D computer animation. Mr.
Delong is also an adjunct teacher from Central Georgia Technical College and brought the experience of having
post-secondary students compete and place at the National VICA Skill Olympics in HVAC contests. In September,
along with 900 other students and advisors from across Georgia, Skills-USA Construction, Automotive HVAC and
Computer sections started the year off with a group of students participating in the fall leadership conference on
Jekyll Island. Mr. Jon Liston helped to organize and conduct the meetings and workshops at the conference. The
Jones County Skills USA Chapter serves as organizer and host for Region Five Competition held at Middle Georgia
Technical College in Warner Robins. Over two hundred students from forty one schools compete in 28 different
contests ranging from leadership skills, such as public speaking and quiz bowl, to automotive construction, and
health occupation skills contests. Jones County students have advanced to state competition in at least 5 contests
during each of the 12 years since the chapter was formed. Mr. Thorntons Automotive Service Technology class
also contributed to the state and regional advances. Mr. Liston also attended the National Skills USA convention
and competition in Kansas City, serving as advisor and judge for two national contests.

Health Occupations Skills USA is actively involved in school and county activities. The
club welcomes students who are interested in the health care field. The students travel to
nursing homes and hospitals to help those in need. Students who enroll in the advanced
Health Occupations classes can also recieve a certificate called the CNA (Certified Nursing
Assistant), as a reward for their time and dedication, if they work over 50 hours. Throughout
the courses, the students learn things that will help them later in life if this is the field of their
choice. Some of these skills include learning important lifesaving skills, medical terms, how to
keep the books, check temperatures, blood pressure, pulse and much more. The organization

The Anchor Clubs main focus is on brain related
disorders. The Anchor Club is dedicated to serving the
community. Its main service project is working with
residents at Stone Brooke in a program called Stone
Brooke Buddies. The Anchor Club is new at JCHS and
working at building membership and developing
service projects.
Key Club is a service organization
to the community. The club is involved
in various activities throughout the year.

Intro to Teaching is a year long class
taught by Coach Daniel Lewis. Students
in the class take daily trips to Gray
Elementary to work with the teachers and
students there. Once every nine weeks,
the high school students must teach a
lesson to their classes and are graded on
their lesson. Interacting with the teachers
and children help the students learn
about what qualifications must be met in
order to get into the teaching profession.
It is a great opportunity to work one-on-
one with children, and this interaction
can help students decide what they might
want to do in their future careers.

Teens Against Pregnancy/ Vision, Image, Power
also known as TAPS/V.I.P. is an organization
whose goals center around providing meaningful
and relevant academic and social opportunities
to its members. TAPS provides activities to
promote its members academic and personal
growth. TAPS strive to keep its members
involved in events that promote a members self-
esteem and instill in them a desire to learn and
achieve beyond the high school level. TAPS
believes that keeping its members involved in
positive activities will hopefully deter them from
engaging in negative ones, such as drugs, alcohol,
premarital sex, and other negative teen
activities.
TAPS has prided itself as an organization
that is in support of community activites and
volunteer events. TAPS has assisted with the
Veterans Day Program, canned good drives,
coat and belt drives, and health fairs, among
others. TAPS has sponsered activities that
allow its members to gain knowledge such as
Teen Summit on Domestic Violence and the
James Wimberly Institute. TAPS also sponsers
college visits to universities of interest to its
members. TAPS also provides scholarships to a
deserving TAPS senior and a minority
scholarship to a deserving Jones County High
School senior.
