REFLECTIONS
could Talk...
Valhalla 2001 is but a
reflection of the brief,
yet so very influential,
part of our lives spent
in the classrooms and
halls of Northeast. We
hope it captures the
spirit and pride that re-
sides within the NEHS
family.
The Spirit of Northeast
is about to tell its story ...
REFLECTIONS = 3 f
The Eastside
The Past, Present. and Future
There used to be a point in time
When the Eastside was the place
Where everyone wanted to come and live
And raise their kids one day.
People everywhere were excited
Because Northeast was the school
That transformed the minds of those who
thought
That school was just for fools
Our parents and older siblings
Came through this school of fame
Striving each and every day
To build Northeasts great name.
But today we fight old stereotypes
Because the Eastsides predominantly black
Some still refuse to see the truth
Northeasts the best Now thats a fact.
From the many roads all over town
To the historical Fort Hawkins,
We have journeyed such a long, long, way
Because in our hearts we are walking ...
Walking down the Eastside memory lane
And remembering the best of times,
We know that the joys and struggles of youth
In our hearts will everlastingly shine.
Northeast was created just for the Eastside
Together they are a mighty fold,
The Eastside, strengthened by the spirit of
Northeast
Will be remembered by the red, black, and gold.
The Eastside will always remain on top
For the treasures it has to give,
Northeast is the greatest of this wealth to be
found
And in our children these memories will live.
Live down in our hearts as our legacy grows
So we can sit back and reflect one day,
To reminisce about how the mighty Northeast
Molded us and paved our way.
So may Raider and the Eastside pride
Come overtake my heart,
As I sit down and remember
My love for both will never part.
Jamil Willis
4 REFLECTIONS
I am a rainbow of many colors filled with chapters of change and history.
Enriched by the hands of time, my joyous spirit has risen and fallen, only to
rise again. Time has ratted on me, as seen by my cracking walls, sidewalks,
and parking lots, Rain seeps its way into my classrooms, finding entrance
through my weathered roofs. Time seems to be taking its toll on me. Maybe
not. I am now showing Father Time my revived endurance as my body,
constructed of three buildings, is undergoing major repairs. Even though my
35 years of age plainly show, I am now aging with dignity. And speaking of
my body, I feel like it stretches out like a rubber band across the Eastside hill.
Born in 1965, my right arm is Horace S. Lasseter and my left arm is Mark
Smith. I can remember by birth like it was yesterday. And I also remember
how different things were back then. I was a victim of segregation in those
early years, with white females studying in Lasseter and white males in Mark
Smith. My cries for integration were finally heard in 1969 and Northeast
opened my arms to all youth, regardless of race. What a happy day that was!
My body expanded in 1980 with the creating of my legs, the Vocational
Building. Now I feel complete. My body is whole and my spirit alive and
vibrant. Ive had to work hard to keep my history recorded yearly in the
NEHS Valhalla. Do you know why I named our yearbook this? In
Norse myth, Valhalla ~, means the hall of Odin
into which souls of Raiders who
died in battle are received.
Valhalla 2001 is our
own hall, a place to per-
manently capture, store,
and preserve all of our
wonderful memories. I
hope you enjoy this trip
down memory lane.

REFLECTIONS 5
Year after year it gives me a feel-
ing of accomplishment to see you
TAKING TIME TO UNIFY
| love to see you forming new
friendships, and yet maintaining solidly established
ones. Some of you have gained one more responsibil-
ity besides work. Your siblings have
now caught up with you, and you must
make sure that you dont allow them
to make the same mistakes that you
did. As teenagers | know that love is
on your mind, some say it is puppy
love; you Say it is full grown. There is
a lot of pride in different classes. This
pride even makes friends from differ-
ent classes go against one another.
This pride ignites the spirit in the cheerleaders,
motivates the auxiliary, and makes you proud
to say, I go to the EAST! When others drive
past NEHS, they cannot help but see the word
RAIDERS that is in embedded
on my side. This is a proud
display of our unification and un-
yielding pride in one another.

[I see my-
self as a
teenager
when | look
at you. You are all so very friendly and
are always TAKING TIME TO
SOCIALIZE. Whether its in the
morning or afternoon, lunch break or
between classes (and even sometimes
in class), you are never too busy to
chat with your friends and you always
find different ways to communicate.
You are always trying to find out who
goes with whom, what was the home-
work, and who is going to Ft. Hawkins
this weekend. You may use new tech-
nology such as two-way paging and cellular
phones; but due to school board restrictions,
note passing and conversations remain your
primary means of communication. Yet, no
matter which method you may
choose, being in the company
of friends is a top priority.
TAKING TIME TO SOCIALIZE
Though styles and trends change with the
times, my Raiders stay on the cutting edge of
fashion. | watch you come to school looking
like you have arrived fresh from a Vibe maga-
zine photo shoot. Every week some of
you come to school wearing new clothes,
accessories, and sporting new hairdos.
Have you noticed that when looking at
fashion trends, what comes around goes
around again? Flares and bellbottoms
are back, but with a touch of platinum
style. Capris, also known as peddle push-
ers, are making an off the chain shine.
Go-go boots are back, air brushed shirts,
and so are the platforms. Leather has
returned and is very popular. And whats
up with all this cargo stuff that has
suddenly become popular? I! see cargo pants,
cargo capris, and even cargo vests. |! love the
attention you pay to looking good each and every
day you enter my halls. TAKING TIME TO
STYLE is just one more way you show pride in
yourselves and in me!

Lunchtime is your fa-
vorite part of the day.
My halls are filled with
the wonderful aroma of
freshly cooked food. The clanking of the trays, the
constant crunches and chews, the money that is
put in the drink and snack machines, all signify that
the Raiders love to TAKE TIME TO EAT!
Throughout my years, | have seen the sparkling
glow of happiness in your faces when my lunch bell
loudly echoes through the halls. Then, following
the boisterous rumble of my lunch bell, my floors
suddenly begin to tremble like an earthquake by
the lunch stampede. You scramble quickly to be
at the front of the lunch line. | Know that one
of your favorites is Fried Chicken. The
wonderful lunch staff cooks it so well. You
swiftly sprint down the halls when my bell
bellows, enchanted by the fragrant, crispy,
aromatic, smell of fried chicken, to in slang
terms, Get Your Grub on! My classroom
walls have seen you try to slyly grab a quick
sip of your sweet and fruity Fruitopia. You
have also tried to, quietly and inconspicu-
ously, munch on those crunchy and crispy
Doritos and Lays. My floors are ap-
palled when they witness you throwing good
healthy food into the trash. Yet | am thor-
oughly embarrassed and disgraced when
some childish student starts a food fight in
the cafeteria in the name of fun. My
windows blink a little tear. | wish that you
would not waste your food. But when | look at most of
your faces |! see relief. This is not only your time to eat
lunch, but your time to have a break from class work. |
see you all socializing with your friends and having
yourselves a marvelous time. Then, to your dismay, the
bell rings it is now time to go back to class and get
back to work.
Even with your hectic schedules,
you still find that TAKING TIME TO PREPARE
comes natural to you. |! see you preparing for your
futures everywhere | look! You can be found search-
ing college information on the media centers internet,
visiting counselors, applying yourselves in my class-
rooms, meeting deadlines, practicing on
my athletic fields, participating in extracur-
ricular activities, and the list goes on. And
| cant help but mention the many tests
you take the PSAT, SAT, ACT, ASVAB,
and the unforgettable GHSGT. You make
it evident that Raiders will not stand still
and let life pass them by. You are willing
to do whatever it takes to be confidently
prepared for your lives ahead. _ This
brings to mind an old quote: Some
people make things happen, some
watch what happens, and some wonder
what happened. If you are part of my
Raider family, you make things happen!
TAKING TIME TO PREPARE
My heart rejoices
when you succeed! | love to see you eager
to be your best. | celebrate with you as you
run down the halls hugging, smiling, and
screaming when you pass the Georgia
High School Graduation Test. But | also
share in the sadness of those of you who
must face the disappointment of not hav-
ing successfully completed all parts.
Your pierced hearts and tear stained
faces bruise my heart and feelings as |
try to silently console you. But how |
admire your steadfast perseverance!
Success requires such commit-
ment and hard work. But the
rewards are great! | love your
smiles when you flash those high
averages on your progress re-
ports. And theres nothing like the
sweet smiles of victory on the
athletic field, or glowing pride
from being recognized by our
school and community. TAKING
TIME TO SUCCEED is time
well spent.

But why do | see so many of you cramming

benches, and getting passes to the library for

Teachers play a most impor-
tant role in the success of my
students. Every year you try to
ingrain knowledge and under-
standing into their minds. You
give countless time and effort
without any special reward.
You are not recognized enough
for all of the wonderful things
that you try to do for these young
men and women. Your purpose is to
teach, but you also have to check
dress code, check i.d. badges, moni-
tor tardies, and deal with misbehav-
ing children. This should not be such
a major part of your job! It hurts me
so much when you try to teach and
some students do not take full advantage of
it. Some of these kids even dare to doze off
during class. | occasionally persuade a
teacher to drop a book or make that student
stand in order to set an example. |! wish all
of my students would appreciate that you
are only here to help them learn so they may
anticipate a wonderful and prosperous fu-
ture. Thank you for TAKING TIME TO
TEACH. Teachers please dont give up
and abandon my classrooms. My students
need you now more than ever. Age and
maturity have shown me that most students
ultimately take advantage of the knowledge
and skills you have shared with them. Remember, to
teach is to touch a life
forever.

AKING:
My. my. my! Look-a-here, look-a-here, the first class of
the millennium. Who would have thunk it. My
seniors, you all have so much to offer. ve watched you
crow from teens to adults. It was hilarious watching you,
some | thought would never make it. After coming from
Appling you had a little too much freedom. No one to
keep an eye on you. but me. Watching you skip class was not an
enjoyment to me, but hopefully, a bad habit you outgrew. So you
know | told on you to keep my RAIDERS on track. The Class of 2001
has a lot of potential, and from what I see, a lot of initiative. You are
so well involved and true to your class but the things you've been
through are unimaginable. In 1997 you first entered my halls and
somehow | knew this would be challenging! Challengingly hard. You
came wondering my halls lost and confused, asking the wrong people
where to go. Lcouldnt help but chuckle. Innocent freshmen, you
were once called but now you have grownup. In 1998 you were just a
litthe more mature, but not mature enough. You knew your way
around the RAIDER territory. By then you had the big head; you
thought you really knew the ropes of
Northeast High, but you were not even
close. The rules have changed, and
you have had to adapt, but the things
you said are humorous. Tve been
here for a long time and [Ive heard some things in my
day, but your class tops it all. You created some pretty
farfetched excuses. My favorite is I left my ID badge in
my last period. Your junior year was calmer and you
looked back at your years and realized that you were no
longer a mischievous child. You became more focused
and involved. | think you were doing everything in sight. It seems
like the class of 2000 really didnt exist. Why? Because your class of
2001 took over your junior year. Now lets talk about school spirit.
The class of 2001 has always been spirited. And not because of me.
but it was always deep tn you. [| love you all dearly. Sorry, a little
emotional there. Now as you finally reach your senior year, you will
achieve the highest level in your education so far. Yes it is your year
to do hard work and also the year to kick back and have fun. [cant
say enough about my first millennium class, if | try to say everything.
1 would be here all day. You have been educated, molded. respected.
and corrected during your time at NEHS. And my halls will never
forget the lasting impressions you've made. And most importantly.
you are true: true to yourselves, true to
your class, true to NEHS, and especially true
to me. You are the true class of the millen-
nium. Northeast High, | present to you the
Class of 2001.

Surceon Generals Warning: Senioritis causes drowsiness, a negative attitude,
a sloppiness in appearance and may complicate graduation.

CLASS OF 2001
Tie interruption is to warn you of this horrible disease sweeping the
Class of 2001. It has gotten to the best of you. Its side effects are
krushal. Is it hard for you to stay awake in class? Are you starting to
have a negative attitude about school? Has your appearance
changed for the worse? If you are experiencing any of these symp-
toms then perhaps you have contracted the disease known as
Senioritis. In some incidents people have fallen faint and have had
to be hospitalized. Some have even faced near death experiences
and doctors have had to revive them. Please beware and take all
precautions. There is no cure for this nasty disease during your senior
year. But don't despair, because remission and hope are as close as
the next pep rally or assembly. So if you feel Senioritis kick, know
that it's only going to last a while because it miraculously fades away
on May 26, 2001. So watch out and beware, because Senioritis is
coming for you!

Sat. Rodney M. Davis
April 7, 1942
September 6, 1967
, @8 LR ers eae. .
Tn my halls many Raiders have died and are remembered. But, there is one man whose heroic actions led him to be honored with the nations
highest decoration for bravery the U.S. Medal of Honor. Sgt. Rodney M. Davis was a well-known and respected man. During one of the
thousands of battles fought in Vietnam, Davis sacrificed his life for his country. Posthumously, Davis earned the nations highest decoration for
bravery, and now the Navy has even commissioned a ship in his name. | think his story is one we all should imprint in our hearts....
Rodney Maxwell Davis was born April 7, 1942, in Macon Georgia. After he graduated from Peter G. Appling High School on May 29,
1961, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. It was here that he began his short but heroic career in the military that made his name
famous. On September 6, 1967, he had been in Vietnam for only one month. As the right guide of 2nd platoon for company B, Davis was
part of the Ist Marine Division. He was 25 years old and a 6-year Marine Corps Veteran. During an attack from the North Vietnamese Army
regulars he gave his men orders, while at the same time he moved from man to man shouting words of encouragement.
Davis came to a halt an enemy grenade had just landed among them. Davis threw himself on the grenade, absorbing with his own body
the full force of the explosion. He died at the young age of 25, leaving behind a wife and two small daughters. The absence of such a great and
courageous man has left an unfilled spot in our ranks and hearts. I think Rodney died for a cause in which he believed. He was willing and
ready to go to Vietnam because he felt he was doing a service; he did not hesitate about going, said his mom Ruth Davis. Comdr. Craig
Heckert of Philadelphia named his ship after Rodney. The USS Rodney M. Davis is a highly automated, multi-purpose ship designed to counter
threats from aircraft, submarines and surface ships. It is ready in both peace and war and upholds the highest standards of both the Marine Corp
and the Navy. This is an awesome tribute to an incredibly awesome young man. Rodney M. Davis epitomizes true Raider Spirit and his
spirit will live forever in the Valhalla halls.

While a lot of seniors have already
decided on college, most of my Raiders
haven t seriously thought about it. This day
gives you the time to represent schools you
might want to attend. Boys, I saw you
wearing your favorite college sports team
Jerseys. Some of you may have been repre-
senting your parents alma maters. I think
it was a good idea to cut kiddy day, and
make you stop reflecting on the past, and
start thinking about the future.
Usually it is a fashion nightmare to
come to school, and see someone who is
dressed identically to you. This day
gives most of you the opportunity to
dress like your closest friends. Some of
you even went and bought special
matching outfits just for the day. You
tried to be next to your twin as much as
possible that day, so everybody would
know that they were your twin.
Well breakout the platforms and bring
out the bellbottoms. You really didnt have
to dig too deep, because you just bought
some for school. The girls had it made.
because 70s fashion is leadine more into
our current direction. Boys had to go look-
ing for old suits, afro wigs, short leather
jackets, and fur coats. You really did show
out. I watched you get into it at the 70s
dance, held sixth period. Many of you were
break dancing, popping and locking, and
there was also a lot of bump going on.
Waiting on tacky day, were you?
Well I put a cease to that tacky day
was just another word for no dress
code. So I thought long and hard, what
would be a good day? Who is always in
dress code to the max, always looks
intelligent, and never looks like a
clown? A geek. Wouldn't you rather be
a geek than tacky? Wherever you found
those thick glasses, please leave them
where they came.

These young ladies are the ones responsible
for introducing me at their football and basket-

fans up. And there I am, in the midst of it all.
These dedicated girls have stuck by through

there by the sides. But cheering at games is not
the only cheering that gets done. The cheer-

We did it! My Raiders played the game and won the title of City
Champs. It took place the night they played Central High School at
Henderson Stadium. They needed this win and for Southwest to be
defeated. In the 4th Quarter, Northeast was winning by two points.
Central had the ball. The ball was soon thrown toward the end zone.
Central had made the winning touchdown. Soon a flag was thrown on the
play. Apparently the opponent dropped the ball before he got to the end

eyes. Moments later, they were greeted with the best news Soutinvesi
lost their game. You should have seen they way they ran across
Henderson's field. Boy was that a sight! 1 was there and saw it all. This
football season was one to remember. All that practicing really paid off.
I only hope we will get even better next season and bring home the state
title! Again, congratulations on the hard work. Thanks to those who did
not give up.

When you think of the word teamwork, what do
you think about? Well, I think about my Raiderette
basketball team. These talented young ladies come
together and play the game. This year our team is led
by one senior, Jennifer Harper. All of the girls do a
tremendous job on game day. My girls rank #1 in the
city as well as the region. Iam so proud of them. You
know I will always be there forever because, youve
kept me around for all these years. Basketball is a sport
that requires hard work, dedication, sweat, and good
health. My girls dem-
onstrate that, and a lot
more. I see how hard
they practice after
school, and the work
pays off during a game.
I love you all so much.
Keep up the good work
and good luck girls!
Definition of a Raiderette
It was a rainy afternoon
That I'll never forget;
/ was stopped by some Patriots,
Seminoles, and Bravettes;
They enclosed me all around;
Our fierce glances met;
I stood tall with a smile;
| didnt break a sweat.
I said, Pardon me, Ladies,
But I must be on my way;
The distinguished Raiderettes are
Volunteering today.
They rolled their eyes and shook their heads;
Several of them stepped forward and said,
I despise your kind;
You ain't all that;
Like a day-old coke,
Your kinda flat!
You say you're as good as good can get,
But just what is a Northeast Raiderette?
Take heed, I said, as I began;
Jot down notes; inform your friends;
A real Raiderette is one of a kind;
With good looks alone, we'll blow your mind.
Intelligent, ambitious, sensuous and sassy,
Not prissy or catty, but elegant and classy,
Athletic, artistic, academic are we,
Divine, proud, strong sisters forever;
We stand our ground, fight battles together.
Raiderettes are impenetrable, impossible to stop,
Goaltoriented, optimistic, we're headed to the top.
And there you have it, a true Raiderette;
Inhale and digest it, and never forget!
The girls began crying, then dropped to their knees;
May we enroll at Northeast and be Raiderettes, please?

li THE SEEDLING
v By: Paul L. Dunbar
As a quiet little seeding To be sure, the haste and hurry
Lay within its darksome bed, Made the seeding sweat and pant;
To itself it fell a-talking, But almost before it knew it
And this is what it said: It found itself a plant.
Tam not so very robust, The sunshine poured upon tt,
But I'll do the best I can; And the clouds they gave a shower;
And the seedling from that moment And the little plant kept growing
Its work of life began. Till it found itself a flower.
So it pushed a little leaflet Little folks, be like the seeding,
Up into the light of day, Always do the best you can;
To examine the surroundings Every child must share life's labor
And show the rest the way. Just as well as every man.
The leaflet liked the prospect, And the sun and shower will help you
So it called its brother, Stem; Through the lonesome, struggling hours,
Then two other leaflets heard it, Till you raise to light and beauty
And quickly followed them. Virtues fair, unfading flowers.
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: For
whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also
reap. ... Galatians6:7
Sow wisely and reap joyously!
With love,
Cassandra Ellsberry and Angeline Allison

Donald,
October 20, 1982 was very special to us. It was the day that
God brought you into our lives. From the moment we first laid
eyes on you, we knew you were a special child. You were an
eight-pound spitting image of your Momma! Through the years,
we have watched you grow from a baby into a fine young man.
Though obstacles have sometimes appeared in your path, you
some how, some way, always overcame them.
And here you are today; about to
embark on that journey called life.
When we look into your eyes we
see the future, a world of oppor-
tunities. We are proud to say
that you're our son and brother.
We know that you will succeed in
life and all its' adventures. Reach
high and never look low. Remem-
ber you're the best and never
settle for less. May God bless
you and keep you as you reach
for your goals in life. Always
keep in mind, you are our shining
star, our dream come true.
With love,
The Williams Family

journey together, it is only the beginning of the journey into the future. To the Class of

Friendship is the most important treasure
Life without each other would not be a pleasure.
We talk about all our deepest secrets
BIG and small
Knowing that we will remain friends through it all.
We have watched each other grow up and become
young ladies
Others are envious and may think that we are shady.
We are unique and different, as that is what keeps us
together.
We have never fallen short or disrespected one another.
We keep it real, and never misunderstood
Some try to be as tight, others wish they could.
Soon that day will come when we will have to depart,
Only in sight, but not from ones heart.

Dear Kevin,
This year you graduate high
school! Where does the time go so
quickly? It seems like only yester-
day we were bringing you from
Coliseum Hospital as a newborn
baby. You have been such a bless-
ing for us to watch grow and
progress. Dad, your brothers, and
I are so very proud of you and
your achievements. We realize
that God has richly blessed you.
Your assertiveness and determi-
nation are admirable traits. Should we also talk about strong-will?
Behind that sweet smiling face is a strong will that can be a great
advantage if you surrender it to God and use it in service to your Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Use your will to do what is right and you'll succeed in life, no matter
what you undertake to do. Always remember Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thy own understand-
ing. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy path.
We love you and again offer our sincere congratulations to you on this
your high school senior year.
