Celebrating
the
CENTURY
When the class of 2002 entered the halls of Westside High School on August 10,
1998 they prepared themselves for many firsts. During the next four years, these
freshmen will experience numerous rites of passage. The students will attend
Seminole sporting events, get behind the wheel, take the SAT, and even vote, all for
the very first time. As they climb the ladder from freshmen to seniors, they too will
Celebrate the Century. As we enter the next millenium, no one knows what journeys
await these high school rookies.

The beginning of a new school year always
brings excitement. However, this year was
unique. Students began classes on
August 10 and ended the year on May 21.
Our school population boomed due to
the addition of another class. School spirit
roared in the sports rivalries of
Central, Southwest, Southeast, and North-
east. Through it all, we proved that Seminole
blood runs deep and true.

SENIOR SUPERLATIVES
Senior superlatives are students who are outstanding in every category. First, teachers nominate students whom they consider to
be superlative. They must have a grade point average of 3.5 to qualify. Next, students are given a points sheet to have signed by
their teachers and/or advisors. Points are given for club participation and holding offices, sports, community service, and awards.
The eight boys and eight girls with the higest points are named Senior Superlatives.

CLASS OF 1999
THE SENIOR RETREAT
% nacold and windy Friday morning the seniors left for Camp Martha
Johnston for a field trip full of unexpected events. The day started off
with a crazy visitor by the name of*TinaTurner a.k.a. Dr. Baber. She
livened up the morning and got a little too much of the Seniornole
blood flowing. During the day, the seniors attended workshops
preparing them for life after high school such as learning how to buy
a Car, career planning, ordering graduation announcements and a
maintaing stress class. They joined together in an open field for sack
lunches, volleyball, and football games. B 93.7 radio station supplied
live music and the overall experience bonded the class together. This
day will be a memory they all will look back on as a day in the life of
a senior Seminole.

TRACK ANYONE?
Track and Field performed very well in 1998.
Last year's track team was very
enthused about running. The num-
ber of members was outstanding.
Fortunately, everyone who tried
out made the team. The dedica-
tion, desire, and love of the sport
helped the Seminoles succeed.
Westsides opposing teams
were the same AAAA schools that
we competed against in basket-
ball and football.
The boys track team was full
of individuals, but together they
work well as a team. They hada
very good year last year. In order
to succeed they had to be in great
shape. It takes a lot of hard work
and dedication. Todd Davis said,
We had a lot of members and
everybody did what they were
supposed to do.
There was obviously no
playing around when it came time
to put their game faces on.
Coach Chance was a positive
motivator and provided constant
encouragement. Garan Coker
said, Traveling to different areas
in the state was good, not only for
competition, even though that was
our main goal, but we also got to
meet and socialize with different
people. Even though the boys on
the team were handling something
new in track and field, they were
getting a good feel of great sport
at Westside High School, even if it
was our first year. We look forward
to even bigger and better next year.

GIRLS SOCCER IS A BIG SUCCESS
ry 182 }= Sports
Wy, yes
The varsity girls soccer team
had a good building year in 1998.
Girls soccer is a brand new con-
cept in the Bibb County public
schools. 1998 was the first year
that girls had the opportunity to
play ona team of theirown. Coach
Henderson's enthusiasm for the
sport of soccer and desire to win
really helped boost the girls.
Itis important to remember that
soccer is more than just running
and kicking a ball around. Itis a
mental game as well. One must
be field smart as wellas skilledin
order to be successful. Although
the girls did not win as many games
as they would have liked to, they
all had a lot of heart. The fact that
all of the opposing teams (with the
exception of Central) have had
previous girls seasonsis definitely
a factor. Hopefully, with a little
more experience the team will
reach their full potential. We need
to improve a lot from last year and
there are some things we need to
work on, said team member,
Whitney Setzer.
Overall, the 1998 girls soccer
season was a victory. It gave the
girls a chance to get in shape and
have a wonderful time.

TOSS ACROSS
Kelly Wolfenbarger does a good job

The 1998 varsity girls softball team
was very successful. There were a
lot of girls who tried out. Those who
were selected were extremely tal-
ented. Most of the girls have played
sports previously, so getting into
shape wasn'ttoo difficult. The Noles
practice schedule was fun, but taken
very seriously.
1997 was a building year for the
Seminoles, and the experience made
a big difference. Their opponents
were fierce, but nothing that the Lady
Noles couldn't handle. Coach Baber
and Coach Womack did a good job
leading the girls to a successful sea-
son. Coach Henderson also helped
out this year.

VARSITY SOFTBALL IN 1998
It is important to remember how
much time and dedication the mem-
bers of the softball team contribute to
their sport. Softball is notthe same as
it used to be. Westside has played
fast-pitch softball for the last two years,
as Opposed to slow pitch like many
high schools play. It took much prac-
tice and determination to be success-
ful in this new league.
Fortunately, teams like the
Westside Varsity Softball team are
helping to influence other females to
participate in sports. Softball is not
only a lot of fun, but also a great way
to get in shape.

The road to victory is paved with preparation. BE
PREPARED. Life is not winning or losing, but how
you play the game. PLAY WELL. Be true to
yourself, your friends and your family.
We love you and are so very proud of you.
Always strive for the prize.
Love, Mom & Dad
Do you not know that those who run in a
race all run, but one receives the prize? Run
in such a way that you may obtain it. And
everyone who competes for the prize is
temperate in all things. Now they do it to
obtain a perishable crown, but we for an
imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus:
not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one
who beats the air.
