The Building Of The Legacy

A Comparison Of
Westside And Other
Surrounding
Schools

For the past two years, there
has been talk of a new high
school. The time has come and
it finally opened. The building
on open land in the newly
developed section on Heath
Road. Students came from all
over the Macon area to attend
this school. The school is a
mixture of two rival high
schools Central and
Southwest. The Chargers and
the Patriots became united

under one building as the
Seminoles.

Westside features two
courtyards one for all
students to use and one
dedicated for the juniors. The
school sold bricks with
inscriptions for fifty dollars,
which are very similar to the
bricks in Atlantas Centennial
Park. The courtyard also has
park benches for the students
to sit and relax during the day.

Both faculty and students
agree Westside High School
has better accommodations
than the previously attended
schools. The classes are
cleaner, the hallways are
wider, and the lunchroom has
better food. The school has
new heating and air systems,
which is a blessing, and has big
picture windows for students to
enjoy the beautiful campus.

In Science Lab.

The students at Westside
High are being introduced to
different theories of science.
They learned about different
phases of matter of states; they
are solid, liquid, gas, and
plasma. The students also
learned about the electron
cloud. The exact location of
the electrons is never known.

Scientist say that electrons
move too quickly and are too
tiny to ever be pinpointed.
Their instructor taught them
the difference in chemical and
physical changes. Physical
change is when the entire
substance have different
properties. Chemical change is
when it changes in size, state,

color, and shape.

The science classes at
Westside High have done
several labs. One particular lab
is Date and Observations.
During this lab, the students
learned that mossy zinc fogged
and fizzed when it reacted with
Hydrochloric Acid.

Starting a strong tradition.

The Seminole football program
in its first year has proven it will
bea tough act to follow. Westside
had a 9-0 record, they let no one
stand in their way. Witha brand
new team, lead by the legendary
coach Robert Davis, they ex-
ceeded all expec tations.

This tradition wasnt begun
over night. Starting in the spring
of 1997, the team began meeting

Seminole football team began to
work as one.

The deciding moments came
at Westsides first game in early
September against the Lanier
County Bulldogs. The Seminoles
dominated throughout the game
for a final score of 57-0. After the
shutout many doubts were put to
rest.

After this game the Seminole
football team kept on going
strong. The final record was 9-0,
the Noles finished on top. They

Westsides Swim Team

This swim team is the new
kid in town. It has gained
several new supporting fans.
This is the first swim team for
Bibb County, as well as
Westsides first swim team. It
has been a new challenge as
well as anew goal. Swimmers
have lobbied for nine years to
have this addition to the Bibb
County Athletic Program.

The hardest thing the swim-
mers have had to deal with is
the fact that they are all friends,
and practice together.

Spring Start -
John Aycock gets off to a good start.

Anyone can wear cool

clothes,

Some can look good in a

swimsuit,

But it takes a REAL man to

look good in a Speedo.
-Gary Wood

However, when they compete,
they must compete against
each other! The Swim Team
looks forward to many new
goals achieved and records
made by swimmers in the
years to come.

This year, the Swim Team
competed in meets at the Uni-
versity of Georgia, Georgia
Southern University, and Au-
gusta.

Coaching on the Sidelines -
Coach Anne Simmons gives inspira-
tion to Holley Carswell and Kristin
Hartness before their event.

I know a lot of people
dont understand and
think its monotonous,
down the black lines
over and over, but its
not if youre enjoying
what you are doing. I
love to swim, and I
love to train. The most
prepared are the most
dedicated.

We've Got Spirit!

Cheerleading at Westside reaches new heights.

Behind every good team,
there is a great cheerleading
squad. Westside was no dif-
ferent. Both the Junior Varsity
and Varsity squads gaveit their
all consistently throughout
football, basketball, and com-
petition seasons. Their suc-
cess did not come overnight.
As they say, Practice makes
perfect.

Tryouts were held in the
spring of 1997. Summer prac-
tices were held once a week.

The J.V. cheerleaders show their
spirit as they perform at the last
football pep rally

Treally enjoy being a cheer-
leader. You get to go to all
the games and raise the spir-
its of the crowd and players
alike.

-Whitney Setzer

Once school started, practices
were four days a week with
games on Fridays and Satur-
days. The girls always had
smiles on their faces. They
pulled the teams through some
tough times.

Many memorable moments
were made on the buses, dur-
ing games, performing at half
time, pep rallies, and practices.
They really had a great season.
Without cheerleaders, its just
a game.
