WARMING UP FOR REAL LIFE

SENIORS PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER GRADUATION

Graduation is an exciting time of year for every
senior. Not only is graduation a ceremony com
memorating the conclusion of many years of
Study, it's also a time of reflecting on the past and
looking towards the future

As the days of graduation get closer, many se-
niors begin to reminisce about the both the good
and bad times they have experienced at Central
Events such as the last football game, the last
gance, and the last bell are memories that should
be cherished forever. Looking back on their years
at Central, many seniors will tell you how much
they have enjoyed life at CentralAndrika Johnson
summed up the fselings of many seniors when she

I'm glad to be getting out of here four years is
enough.

The time before graduation is also a time for
planning for the future. Many seniors have set
goals of either working or going to college after
graduation, Tony Lester summed up his goals for
the future by saying, ! am going to a four-year
college and majoring in computer science. An-
other senior, Chad McCaskill, said, | am going
to Georgia College in Pre-veterinary medicine.

Congratulations, Senior Class of 1996! Continue

OLYMPICS

YOu see them everywhere flags, banners, t
shirts, keyrings, embliemed glasses, sweaters, and
mucn more, Olympic fever is spreading! Everyone
Is showing support for what's going to be one of
the biggest events to put a light on Georgia. While
the general public is anxiously preparing for this
spectacular event, the Atlanta Committee for the
Olympic Games is working very hard at trying to
false Money to pay for the games. Already having
commitiments for 90 percent of the money they
need, they still have to earn $194.7 million with less
than six months to do it. Half of the money needed
will be expected to come from ticket sales. ACOG

We do volunteer work around the city of Macon
We work at Magnolia Manor and we also visit ele
mentary schools to talk to the students about the
Olympics. Jennifer then goes on to tell how one
can become a Dream Team member. To be
come a Dream Team member you have to write
an essay. After you've gotten that far, you have to
attend an interview in Atlanta. When youre cho-
sen, you then go through initiation. When we
asked how if feels to be a member, she re

ticket sales resuming to the general public in Feb-
ruary, ACOG is also selling ptps (premium ticket
packages) to corporations for $50,000 apiece
Other major sources to provide for the money
needed are expected to come from souvenir
sales and parking fees which will pile up when the
games begin

While the ACOG is hard at work, Central's very
own Jennifer Long, Kristen Maynard, and Chris
Baucom are making their own contributions to the
Olympics by being a part of the Olympic Dream
Team, an organization of 100 students selected
out of Georgia. Jennifer Long filled in with the de-

THE
BOILING
POINT

For many Central students and advisors, the
year 1995-1996 was a year for many changes
As some might say it was a year for out with the
old, and in with the new. For the students and
teachets who have no attachment, it's about
fime. Yet. there are many who are attached, and
with the destroying of Lanier A comes the destroy:
ing of many memories. Ms. Simmons, for exom
ple, was in that building from 1988-1995, and for
her there was a lot of heartache, as she drove up , -_
to school the day construction started. Yet, ac = wads a
cording to Ms. Echols, in her short period of work
ing in Lanier A, she can see why this construction
of destruction, is very neccessary

Although there are many joys in o new build
ing, Many teachers are concemed with the owtul
torture of the actual construction. Even though
the ends will justify the meons, the dust and
noise is unimaginabie. Weaver Middie Schoo! is
expected to open in August 1996. Many hoped
Westside High School would open in 1997, but it
could take longer. Lanier A won't actually be
emptied and destroyed until Westside is in ses-
sion. I's going to be very difficult to have Weaver
Middle School as a temporary obstacle between
the buildings. Students already find the new wolk
woy and parking lot annoying, and its especially
interesting when It rains. The new parking lot was
made over the old soccer field, and Pierson Hod:
gins wishes that they cold hove wolted till after
the soccer season

There are many more things that must be
looked at. for according to Ms. Simmons, "Prog
fess Must go on. Although many students of the
past and present will miss the building, it's long
overdue. As student Brent Griffin says. | think it's
great and about time. it should have happened
twenty years ago. Lanier A has seen many gen
erations Come and go, but its time to start a new
generation with ao well-deserved change. Al
though the building is being destroyed, the
memories will live through the hearts and minds
of people for years to come

Angie Miller

lfs much easier for Ms. Echolls to say goodbye, Its only my third year here
and because | haven't been here very long and don't have these feelings of
missing the building, and instead | see all the reasons why this is necessary. |
think this is a step in the right direction.

Students crossing between Construction is under way at Lanier

John Walker realizes how old the
school actually is when he says that,
My Gad went there, so it's probably
about time it came down.

Ms. Simmons told
her daughter as
they were riding up

January 29th,
There's a lot of
sadness, because
this is the last time
Lanier A will be

HOT HEAD
SOCCER

One of the most popular, yet most
underrated sports at Central is soc-
cer. Despite being underranted, last
year's soccer team was one of the
best ever. During the reguiar season,
the Chargers went 9 and 2. This in-
Cluded key victories over Northside
and Baldwin County. Overall, the
Chargers tied with two other teams
for first place, but due to state rules,
they did not go to the state tourna-
ment. This caused somewhat of a
controversy. Many Central fans felt
that a round-robin tournament would
have been a better way to break the
three-way tie. Under the current rules,
the three-way tie was broken by de-

termining who had accumulated the
most goals while playing the other 2
teams in the regular season, When
all was said and done, Warner Rob-
ins and Baldwin County came in over
Central

Last year's soccer term had sev-
eral noteworthy players who contrib-
uted to the teams success, On the
offensive side of the ball, Erie Mc-
Clellan and Matt Britt led the way in
scoring. Jason Patrick, goalie, and
Mark McClellan helped to sure up
the defense. All of the players, how-
ever, made a great effort to get the
team into the first place tie

The Cross Country team practices
hard everyday after school. Each
person on the team had to run over
30 miles everyday. The team was
composed of 5-7 boys and 2 girls
that quit part-way through the sea-
son. Some team members thought
that the training was fun, but the
competitions that the team had
twice a week were difficult. Towards
the beginning of the season Cen-
tral's team, headed by Coach Light-
foot wasn't doing very well; but by

the end Central had become one of
the best. The team might have been
able to do even better had the
teams bus been on time more of
ten. The bus was often forty-five or
more minutes late. The team was
late to most of the meets. Some
times they got to the competitions
half way through the meet and once
as in the case of the State meet
they got there too late to particpate
at all

The Central High School JROTC is
one of the oldest units in America. It
was Started in 1917 when Central was
a school for boys and for fifty years
JROTC was a required class. Through
the years JROTC classes at Central
have become a tradition.

In JROTC you leam about many
things such as First Aid, drug abuse,
techniques of communication with
others, leadership, map reading,
American citizenship, and American
history. It unlocks potential career
opportunities and provides a number
of extra-curricular activities.

Its as easy or as hard as you want
to make it, states Colonel
Schroeder.

GOLDEN EAGLE
NOMINEES

Golden Eagle nominees are students nominated
by teachers who write up recommendations. The
nominees then fill out applications that contain a list
of their past and present accomplishments. This is
only the first part of the process of being a nominee

The nominees then must go through an interview
that lasts about 15 minutes. Theyre interviewed by
one of the three people chosen by the sponsor, the
Macon Telegraph. These people are experts in at
least one of the areas students are nominated in. The
students chosen to be Golden Eagles are selected by
their appliaction, recommendations, and their inter-
view

Guard within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know
how to give without hesitation, how to lose without
regret, how to acquire without meanness; know
how to replace in your heart, by the happiness of
those you love, the happiness they may be wanting
to yourself.

Congratulations!

You finally made it! It seems like only yesterday that |
cried uncontrollably as | leff you crying uncontrollably in
your first grade classroom. | had to learn to let you go
then, just as | have to learn to let you go now. You've tried
my patience, tested my nerves, and made me shake my
head in wonder. Most of all you've made me laugh until |
hurt, put a twinkle in my eyes when nothing else could,
and make my chest swell with pride. Remember,
Wheres my worm, October 21st, Pop, Dawgs, #12,
deer stands, Halloween kidnappings, moons, Jet Skiis,
Blondie, and 3 wrecks in three months. But most of all re-
member how much you are loved!
