SPIRIT OF '94
7ALLY COOL
If youve ever been in a class
room in Willingham B at 1:30 or
you've ever left the taunting cool
ness of the lunchroom to walk
down a Stifling hot unaircondi
tioned Southwest Hall, then you
know just how hot the summers
are to which weve become ac
customed. To the Seniors, Jun-
iors, Sophomores who have had
at least a year of the sweltering
classes, a day
wiping sweat
from your brow
as you frantically
try to keep your
mind focused on
your work in-
stead of how hot
and uncomfort-
able you are,is
nothing unusual.
We can all re
member at some-
time sacrificing our only relief,
fans, just to hear the teachers
finish a lesson. Most of the stu-
dents learn to bear it, the heat
that is. When the controversial
school bond issue was tied up in
court for nearly five years, stu-
dents never really felt there was
any chance of the talk of air con-
ditioning becoming a reality. The
issue became tied up when mem-
bers of the community protested
and filed suit over the legality of
the procedure the city officials
used to get the bond issue on the
Bibb County ballot. The debates
and hearings of the issue became
as hot as the classrooms them
selves. Finally, a compromise was
reached! The suit was dropped
and Southwest was to be fully air
conditioned during the summer
of 1993. Our school was the first
in a group of sev
enteen in Macon
to be updated by
the bond. Now,
the talk that most
students passed
off as doubtful
hopes has be
come a very chil-
ling reality. The
announcement
that Southwest
High School was
going to be air-conditioned com
pletely before the return of the
class of 1994, excited all of the
Patriots.
The air conditioning of Wil-
lingham B will put our school
where it belongs according to the
standards of any modern, public
school. We have long needed
what certainly is no luxury, but a
necessity in the South to make a
school a good learning environ-
ment.

WTALLY NEW
Although the building at Wil-
lingham B is not new, once the
air conditioning project was com-
pleted, there was a new appear-
ance to the classrooms. New
paint, new doors, new windows.
These things gave the campus a
feeling of newness.
Other new things at Southwest
included the Semester System.
Most Georgia
counties have
been on semes-
ters for years.
Bibb County de-
cided it was past
time to join
them. After
studying neigh-
boring Houston
Countys system,
we made the
move. We had to
get use to differ-
ent grading periods and the idea
that spring semester would not
pull up a low, or failing fall se-
mester grade. Another new part
of the semester system was com-
prehensive finals in EVERY class!
93-94 introduced the new ISS,
or In School Suspension pro-
gram. Mr. Philip Oakley joined
the faculty in November to be in
charge of the program. Offenses
which had previously resulted in
Suspension, now might send a
student to ISS instead. There,
they are isolated from the student
body, do assignments furnished
by their regular classroom teach-
ers, and remain totally silent. It is
a punishment without having
days out count against the stu-
dent.
Exit Exams were another new
experience for Bibb County stu-
dents. Tests in English, Math, So-
cial Studies and Science must be
taken in order to
receive diplomas.
The exam should
make students re-
alize the serious
need to study
hard and retain
information.
One of the best
new things for
Southwest was
the new band
uniforms. The
gorgeous red,
white, and blue uniforms made
the 93-94 school year Totally

VARSITY
FOOTE HLL
The Southwest football team had a tough
season, but their determination was still phe
nomenal. Although the team was made up of
many talented players, the magic that leads a
team to victory was not there. Southwest suf
fered major defeats this season losing to inner
city rivals Northeast and Southeast. Despite
these losses, the team never gave up. With a
strong offensive line, led by quarterback Wen
dell Simmons, and a young defense, the Pa-
triots fought to the end in every game. Despite
a disappointing season, every player gave 110
percent at practice and at games. The spirit of
the Patriots has been unbelievable. The South
west team will return to the field next year
with a lot to prove.

The Southwest Cheerleaders of 93-94 have
had a really great year. There were many
newcomers to both Varsity and Junior Varsity
squads, but they have worked very hard to do
their best.
The Cheerleaders had an exciting time at
camp over the summer. There, they worked to
improve their techniques, acrobatic skills, and
practice new cheers. Many of the girls won
awards in various competitions at camp. Both
squads won first place for best cheer in their
division. The best part of camp for the girls
was making new friends and becoming closer
to the other cheerleaders on the squad.
Varsity squad captain is LaShonda James
and co-captain is Jennifer Bass.

Keeping Our Campus Clean
e Southwest Custdial Staff works hard to keep the school
clean. Mrs. Smith starts the day around 6:00 a.m. as she
unlocks the buildings and puts the flag out. The head custodian,
Mr. William Holt, spent most of the last summer at the school
working with the air conditioning project. All the staff work long
hard hours to keep the three buildings as clean as possible.

Drill Team
The Drill Team is showing off their spirit in
their new uniforms. They worked hard all
summer long at camp to give their audience at
the basketball games a great show at half time.
Our new exchange student Linda Mata joined
the Drill Team and rallied Southwest spirit.
All of the Drill Teams fancy steps were
choreographed by Jennifer Bell, who works
with the Atlanta Hawks. All their hard work
and determination will be rewarded when
theyre featured in Studio 26. After the last
game their work is still going to continue when
they start in their community workshop.

Ah, Spring! The leaves returned, the were thrown onto the fields. Soccer balls
flowers bloomed and pollen filled the were kicked around. Juniors planned the
air! However, a different feeling Prom and Senioritis set in for sure
filled the halls at South
west. Pollen blowing in
the open windows and
circulating the class
rooms as fans oscillated
was no longer a problem.
Let them mow the lawn
during classes! We didnt
care. Our walls were solid,
our windows gone.
Spring semes
ter was business as
usual. Baseballs
as the lake began to beckon.
With May came AP exams
and our first Memorial Day
holiday. Yearbooks arrived
and the Class of 94 had their
Signing Party. Soon it would
be June and we would all
abandon Southwest for an
other summer. As the

the addition of a new 220lb. weig!
which reduced injuries to wrestlers. However,
this new weight class was a problem for South
fest since it was one of the six weight di
visions which could not be filled. Although
in number, SW did not lack the skilled wres
tlers needed to rack up the team points to
defeat other schools who were able to fill every
weight class.
The individualism of the sport was clearly
the winnings of the Southwest
wrestlers. Due to the number of forfeits the
team had to make an extra effort to pin their
Opponents. Because of this extra effort the
team as a whole was still able to claim eighth
out of the fifteen schools in the area.
Four wrestlers succeeded in going to the
state wrestling tournament. These were Keith
Swint, Benny Smith, Alton Ford, and Reece
Sheikholeslam. Next year Coach Howe hopes
to have more participation in the sport and
thinks that if this is achieved t
could be the power house it has been in
previous years.
VARSITY TENNIS
Anxious to return to the courts the tennis
team began dedicated practice with f
hints of warm weather. With several seniors
returning to both the boys and girls teams,
the season had a very bright outlook.
Last year the girls team battled a lack of
players to compete against other schools. They
did very well considering the size of the team.
Coach Iris Hill hopes to recruit some young
players for the future.
On the other hand, the boys team was well

Teacher and Friend
She Is Not Dead Carolyn was our friend. We loved her.
She could make you laugh, cry, learn and wonder. She could talk
to you with the knowledge of the greatest teacher or get down on
anyones level. She could fit in anywhere. ;
She was a friend, a next door neighbor, an animal lover
especially dogs), a fisherman, a naturalist and a believer in rights
ONLY with responsibilities. She was an honest, caring human
being. Until the day she died, she didfor others. Some will never
know her. We are glad we did.
Carolyn, we love you. Rest in peace, our friend. And, hey, dont
catch em all!
I cannot say, and I will not say
That she is dead. She is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she lingers there.
And you-oh, you, who the wildest yearn
For an old-time step, and the glad return,
Think of her faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
Think of her still as the same. I say,
Ear iis Iris Hill
She is not dead-she is just away. :

Totally Through
As we look back over these short
months that we have been putting the
Spirit of 94 together, we realize that a
lot of things happened this year. We
set the book up by seasons so that the
final product would have a chronology,
much like a history book. In January,
as we approached our final deadline,
we realized we needed more pages.
Luckily, we were able to do this since
the staff met all deadlines on time.
So, its over for the Class of 94. And
the Patriots had a lot
to get fired up
about. Air condition-
ing, Semester Sys
tem, both brought
moments of frustra-
tion, but we kept
our cool anyway.
Student Council
revived Spirit Stick
competition and the
classes wore colors,
decorated doors and
cheered with each
other. Spirit was alive and well as the
Lady Patriots went to their first-ever
State Basketball Championship.
Latavia Coleman was chosen to play
on the State All-Star Team. We added
pride to our spirit as we watched for
mer Patriot Chip Minton represent the
United States on the Olympics Bobsled
Team.
We said good-bye to friends like
David Reid , as he moved to his new
position as Principal at Weir School,
and to Jackie Richardson who retired.
Many of us remember Mrs. Richardson
as one of Southwests strongest and
most spirited supporters. We will cer
tainly miss her.
The Class of'94 made preparations
for graduation. We ordered caps and
gowns and invitations. Some of us
prayed wed pass English. In May,the
SPIRIT OF 94 arrived. Seniors laughed
and shared memories as they signed
each others Yearbooks in the special
Senior Signing Party. We watched the
Juniors take the new Exit Exam and
prepare to take their place as the Sen
ior Class of 95. We
reflected upon the
many things our
friends, families, and
teachers tried to tell
us as they steared us
toward our MO-
MENT in JUNE.
Finally, graduation
night arrived. There
were sO many mem
ories flooding our
minds as we put on
our academic regalia
and marched into the Coliseum. It was
an emotional time for us as we realized
that this would be the last time we
would do anything together as a class.
We also realized that this was the mo-
ment we has worked for the past
twelve years. It was time for the Class
of 94 to move on and the Class of95
to step into their place as the Senior
Class.
As we took our diplomas and left the
auditorium for our various celebra-
tions, we, THE CLASS OF 94 are
gratefully, finally, and at last... TO-
TALLY THROUGH!!!
