Selections
We've finally come upon that fi-
nal year, overwhelmed with joy but
trembling with fear. To the class of
94 of Central High, are cherished
memories that shall never die.
Proud and strong, thats how we'll
stand, lets leave our home, hand in
hand. Farewell Central High, the
home we trust, we hate to leave you
but its a must. The sea of our love
overflows the soul, it fulfills our
hearts and makes our spirits grow.
My promise to you is Friends to
the end because in our hearts
we'll always be friends. As we start
moving on and moving up, we
mustn't forget where we grew up.
To the teachers who have changed
attitudes, words cant express our
sincere gratitude. From this point
on we must strive to succeed If
it is to be, It is up to me. Approach
graduation with joy in your hearts,
but tears in your eyes, because
friends must part.

Jennifer Lilley and Quintina Quick are only two
of the many band members who spent their hot
summer days at band camp
While lazy days of summer passed
by, some students at Central were
busy laughing their days away while
others were practicing and drilling
for the fall at summer camps. Betsy
Cable, Kathryn Howard, and Chris
Gilbert spent five weeks of their
summer at North Carolina School of
the Arts in Winston-Salem. While
there, they met many new friends
and advanced their learning in jazz
modern, and ballet. Betsy said,'l es-

around and just hung out!
Kevin Adams, Brian Adams,
Hartwell Carson, Jay Carson, and
Wesley Wilson also had a fun sum-
mer at Camp Ridgecrest for boys
The guys stay from two to eight
weeks in the summer. Jay said that
he has been coming to the camp for
about eight years and that he never
wants to stop. They all agreed that
camp was a great place to meet new
friends, learn crafts, and to venture
into the forest. Hartwell summed it
up in these few words, Its cool,
man!
Kiki Marshall, Areecus Ross, and
Joseph Redding sweated the days
away as the Central Charger football
team attended football camp. They
said they had the most fun meeting
new people and the all you can eat
meals. They practiced four times a
day and it really paid off.
Another camp that our Chargers
attended was band camp in Dahlo-
nega, Ga. The camp lasted one week
in August. The band seemed to have
a ball participating in the Miss
Wasiga pageant and shared a tear or
two during devotion night. Quintina

CHARGERS
VOLUNTEER
While most Central Chargers are
out enjoying themselves during the
summer, some are also making plans
for the future. Volunteering can be
the best experience of a lifetime; it is
not only beneficial to the commu
nity, but is fun as well. Many people
praise the fact that they even have
the opportunity to volunteer
Deborah Wood, a senior, has been
volunteering for as long as she can
remember, starting out in her fa
thers office. This summer she vol-
unteered for Vacation Bible School at
Vineville United Methodist Church
and the Morning Star Day Camp at
the Childrens Methodist Home. The
one thing that Deborah learned this
summer was that, It will help me to
realize how fortunate I am and how
much I have to give to others
Quivonda Huston, also a senior
volunteered at the Medical Center of
Central Georgia. There was no spe-
cific duty because she worked
wherever she was needed. Like many
students, she volunteered because for
most scholarships, community ser
vice is required. Quivonda hopes to
someday pursue a career in the medi
cal field. She would like to leave

Some students spend their time
working with children; Johnetta Far-

the future dream of working with
children in a profession. Johnetta be-

jobs for various reasons, mostly to earn money
Demond Howard works in the meat department at
Kroger on Forsyth for extra cash! Besides the lo-
cal grocery stores, like Kroger and Food Max, some
students work in privately-owned stores or their
parents businesses. Students interested in the arts
sometimes participate in the drama scene. I teach

than jobs, students often just hang out volun-

the Popes speech on the last day
The week was filled with exciting
events such as the procession of

The Pope goes to a different coun-

very possibly the only time he will
come to the United States and speak
Denver's local radio stations were
donating their own air time for this
huge event. They translated the
Pope's speech in many different lan-

were sponsored by McDonalds the

In a school bursting at the seams
with talent, a group of four students
are trying to make it big in the com
petitive world of music. Central ju
miors Jonathan Vance, Justin
Joyner, and Rachael Posnak along
with senior Olivia Gowan have
formed the band, Jorge
This band was started in Jonathan
and Justins eighth- grade year when
they began playing their guitars to-
gether. The two decided to get a little
more serious with their music when
they discovered their drummer
Rachael Posnak. These three, in their
freshman year, formed the band
Froot Loop Soop. They played fre-
quently in places around middle
Georgia such as Last Friday
Froot Loop Soop decided that
they needed a lead singer to join
their band, and that is when
Jonathan found Olivia and asked her
to audition for them. Olivia says that
she thought Jonathan was kidding at
first, but then she actually sang for
the band and was given a job
Froot Loop Soop later changed
its name to Jorge. Jonathan plays
the lead guitar, Justin is on the bass
guitar and sings the back-up vocals
Olivia is lead vocalist, and Rachael is
the drummer. Jorge is not only a
great band because of their musical
abilities, but also because of their
performing abilities. As Olivia says

AFTER GRADUATION
Graduation is celebrated by ev-
eryone at one time or another. The
question that comes during this
time is, What is next? Here is
what a few students plan on doing
after they leave the halls of Central
High School.
When Jason Harper arrived at
Central as a freshman, he thought
that it would be bigger and better
than middle school. Apart from
going to school, Jason works at
Kroger. When he has a moment to
catch his breath, he enjoys hunting
and being with his frineds. After
graduation he plans to go to col-
lege, although he has not decided
on which one to attend. College is
a definite yes ... its just a ques-
tion of where to go to college,
Jason remarks.
Jennifer Story always knew she
would graduate because she was
determined to work hard and stay
on top of her school work. After
graduating, she wants to join the
Air Force. She plans on going to
college while there and majoring in
Nursing. Jennifers advice is sim-
ply, Work always comes first
then play all you wish.
Sean Mentzer moved to Macon
last year from Pennsylvania.
When he graduates, he plans to at-
tend Carnegie and Mellon College
and wants to major in Physics, Ar-
chitecture, and Math. Sean would
like to be remembered by saying,
I believe in God and my car.
Most students at Central have a

given to undeserving people. I think that all
these scholarships for minorities are unfair
I think that scholarships should be given to

grades, etc., not because they come from a

SCHOLARSHIPS
Everyone who plans to go to college
needs to think about scholarships. There
are many kinds of scholarships out there
Two scholarship types are merit and
need
Mrs. Galloway explains the many differ
ent scholarships available for students
There are scholarships for writers, athletes
and people with a specific talent like music
or art. There are also scholarships for stu
dents whose parents do not have a lot of
money. A person can have any kind of
G.P.A., it just depends on the scholarships
An example of that is Jostens Leadership
Scholarship. Mrs. Galloway estimates that
thirty percent of our seniors will receive
scholarships. Students can receive as many
scholarships as possible
Mrs. Galloway would like for everyone to
know that the student, himself, needs to do
some research in order to find out about
scholarships. Also, people need to be in the
hardest classes for their ability to make
good grades
Dr. Hinesley informed us about the
HOPE Grant. The HOPE Grant is run by
the lottery. To qualify for this particular
grant, the student should have at least a B
average and their parents must have an ad
justed gross income of less than $60,000
The HOPE Grant has only been around for
one year. A student can also receive a loan
from the HOPE Grant during his sopho
more year at college if the B average is
maintained. If a student meets the stan
dards of the HOPE Grant or any other
scholarships, he or she should apply, says
Dr. Hinesley. Dr. Hinesley encourages stu
dents to try because of his own experience
with scholarships and grants
Mrs. Herring also thinks students should
try for scholarships. Sometimes the stu-
dents might qualify. Although she was not
encouraged to apply for scholarships, Mrs
Herring received one from her fathers com-
pany. Then scholarships were mostly for
boys; people thought girls could not meet
the qualifications needed
There are many scholarships waiting to
be given to people. The students applying
for scholarships should do the research re-
quired to be fully informed about particular
scholarships so that he or she can apply for
the ones that interests him or her
Mrs. Galloway, Dr. Hinesley, and Mrs.
Herring enjoy getting their picture taken
THE SEMESTER SYSTEM
Every year a school goes through
change. This year Central went
from the quarter system to the se-
mester system. This change has al-
tered the grading periods. Instead
of getting report cards three times
a year, students receive them twice
a year.
Ms. Hughes likes the semester
system better than the quarter sys-
tem because it benefits the student
However, she brings to mind the
question that if a student does not
understand the first half of Alger-
bra I, can he truly be expected to
understand anything from the sec-
ond half? When Ms. Hughes was
in high school, she changed every
quarter. She did not have year-lon
courses with the same teacher an
the same period except for classes
like Spanish III or Spanish IV. She
was able to plan her schedule to
her preference so when she did not
like the schedule she had no one
but herself to blame. Ms. Hughes
likes our semester system because
it gives more of a variety of coures.
134 Academics
Amy Claxton feels that the se-
mester system gives the students a
diversity of teachers and different
teaching methods, therefore better
preparing students for college. The
semester system has only been at
Central for one year, but in the
long run, Amy thinks the new
change will better the education of
public high school students, expos-
ing them to many new methods of
teaching. The semester system is a
way of broadening their minds
through diversity.
Schools go through many
changes. However, many students
and teachers agree that going to the
semester system was a positive
change.

Charger pride is
what its all about. It
was the power that
led the Charger wres-
tlers to the mat this
year. With Coach
Jimmy Stewart and
Coach Randy Carr
heading it up, the
wrestling team sur-
passed great odds.
Although they were
young, the team beat
many teams that the
Chargers have never
beat before. Also, the
team not only did
well in all the tourna-

in, byt they brought
home a first-place
trophy, the first for
Central. The coaches

The wrestling careers of

have been victorious ones
It all began around the
middle of wrestling season
during their ninth-grade
year. Eric Turner had to
join a higher weight class
because at that time there
wasnt anyone in his own
class. He wrestled at 112
weight class, had a great
record, and went on to rep-
resent the Charger pride at
state for two years. Eric
wrestled in an even higher
weight class and placed
second in the area and
went to state for a third
year
Jason Turner started out
by beating a varsity wres-
tler when he was only in
the ninth grade. Jason
wrestled at 103 weight
class and also went to state
for two years in a row. He
didnt continue to wrestle
in the eleventh grade, but
rejoined the team during
his senior year.
Jason and Eric Turner

Drama Club
Newspaper Staff
The drama club
is responsible for
producing all as-
pects of the one-
act play for the
one-act play com-
petition in the fall.
There are usually
two to three plays
produced per year.
Actors in plays are
drawn from both
the drama club
and the school in
general. Thus, the
drama club serves
essentially as an
organization for
students to dis-
cuss, interpret,
and act on various
dramatic situa-
tions.
The Central
High newspaper is
a popular aspect of
the high school ex-
perience. Entitled
Charger Pride, the
goal of the newpa-
per is to produce
six newspapers per
year. Since it is
considered a jour-
nalism course, the
students are re-
sponsible for the
processes that
make up the pro-
duction of the
Charger Pride.
Mrs. Hinesley
has been in charge
of the Charger
Pride for almost 14
years.
Genesis began
as a dream of two.
It became a heart-
felt desire of
many; it proved it-
self a shining ex-
ample of the rich-
ness within Afri-
can-American cul-
ture.
A group of 35 stu-
dents, under the
guidance of Ms.
Dianne Henry and
Ms. Sonja Mat-
thews, participated
in a variety of up-
beat expressions of
African-American
heritage via dance,
song, theater, and
oral interpretation.
Mrs. Hinesley confers with Jennifer Shim-
ler about the recent publication.
Anna Gail Odom listens intently to instruc-
tions.
Cortney Kuehn and Caroline Ridley prepare for

Centrals Model United Nations group went to Washing-
ton, D.C. in February. They went to participate in the North
American Invitational Model United Nations representing
many countries including Burundi, Costa Rica, and the Rus-
sian Federation. The group of 40 students along with Mrs.
Middleton and Mrs. Dumas worked very hard during their
stay and Jeremy Cole and Andy Boggs brought back an
award for the school.
Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and even the
long overnight train ride created many unforgettable memo-
ries. The students all gained something from the experience.
It is a great opportunity which everyone should look into!

Beyond Words . .
Travis Hartley is the lucky junior who
survived the car accident of Carlos Young in
June of 1993. Travis was riding in the pas-
senger side of Carlos Dodge Ram when
Carlos hit a tree. Travis was fortunate
enough to get out of the flaming truck, but
he also suffered a punctured lung and a bro-
ken right forearm. Forty-two percent of his
body had third degree burns. His left leg
was amputated six inches below the knee.
Travis did not know that Carlos had died
in the crash until six weeks later. When he
found out, he was severly depressed and
blamed himself. Carlos mother helped
Travis by coming to visit him and talking
to him. Travis had nine surgeries, hy-
boberic oxygen treatment, whirlpool treat-
ment, physical therapy, and prosthetic ther-
apy.
Travis is getting back in the routine of
things, realizing he cant change the past.
He says his leg, is not state of the art, but
I'm getting used to it. When looking back
on what helped him get through, Travis
gives all credit to Carlos parents, his own
parents, his friends, and determination
Travis said, I knew he (Carlos) was watch-
ing me and I knew how bad it would hurt
him to see me quit. He said to remember
that, Theres always tomorrow. Travis
would like to recognize Mr. Young and
Mrs. Betty Thank You!
Travis Hartley had no problem coming back to
school or being with his friends
Travis found great comfort from Mr. Em-
mett and Mrs. Betty Young.

5 Hannah Gandy, Jennifer Lilley, Denise nette nett, Central's prized band director for 28 years
4 played as the first trumpet in the Macon Bibb
County Elementary Band. Throughout high
school he played the trumpet in the band and in
the orchestra at Lanier. In his senior year, Bob was
the solo trumpet in the Georgia Allstate Band in
Atlanta. He received a full scholarship to the Uni-
versity of Georgia where he played in the Red
Coat Band. Bob worked through college by play-
ing with professional bands. When he was 19 he
was hired to play with the Glenn Miller Orches-
tra
Bob began teaching in Sparta, GA. He left after
one year and was hired at Lanier where he stayed
for three years. He then moved to Daytona, Flor-
ida where he led the Seabreeze High School Band
Bob returned to Lanier in 1970 and has been di-
recting the Sugarbear Band since. He served as the
district instrumental chairman for the 11th dis-
trict of the Georgia Music Education Association
He was the state president of the Georgia Associa-
tion of Jazz Educators and started the Allstate Jazz
Band program in Georgia
Bob finds it hard to come up with a best mem-
ory, but one that sticks out in his mind is when
Bill Clinton played with the Sugarbear Band while
speaking in Macon. His saddest memory is losing
band members to accidents resulting in death
Even though this is Bobs last year at Central
hes still going to remain busy with other activi
ties. You will be able to find him at the Macon
Symphony Youth Orchestra where he will be di-
recting. He will also be playing with the Macon
Symphony and directing a jazz program at Macon
. . College. He will also be enjoying playing golf,
SS hunting, and fishing which are some of his favor-
| even 4 ite hobbies
After Bob leaves Central he hopes that the Sug-
arbear Band will continue their Superior perfor-
mance levels that they have maintained for 30
years. He also wants them to continue to serve the
school system and the community. He says for the
band to remember that, Healthy competition
breeds excellence and, They must never accept
anything from themselves other than their best
effort in everything they do. The most fullfilling
experience that one can have is helping others.
Central High School thanks Bob for all of his
time, dedication, and work and wishes him the
best of luck in the future. Thanks Mr. B.!! We'll
miss you!

We Lead In
The Central High School JROTC is one of the oldest
JROTC units in America. It was started in 1917 when
Central was a school for boys and for fifty years JROTC
was a required class. Through the years JROTC classes at
Central have become a tradition
In order to be a part of JROTC you have to be healthy
proud of your citizenship in the United States, and at least
thirteen years of age
In JROTC you learn about many things such as First
Aid, drug abuse, techniques of communcation with oth
ers, leadership, map reading, America citizenship, and
American History. It unlocks potential career opportuni-
ties and provides a number of extra curricular activities
It's as easy or as hard as you want to make it, states

Centrals STAR student!

a
When Dr. Hinesley first told me that I
had been chosen Star Student, I was very
excited. The senior class is full of talent "a
this year, so I regarded it as a great honor. = eS
The first criterion considered in choosing ~~ 7
the Star Student for a school is SAT scores, .
but Dr. Hinesley explained to me that there ;
is more to it than that. They also look at
grades and school activities things that
show personal initiative. Ive been told
since I was five that if I did not work hard
for scholarships, 1 would not be able to go
to the college that I wanted. They didnt
have to tell me twice! That has been my
goal all through school, and I want to
thank all of the members of the faculty
who had a hand in choosing me and for
helping me to get one step closer to that
goal.
Making a choice for Star Teacher was
difficult because I have had so many teach-
ers that I feel made a contribution to my
success as a student. I chose Ms. Peggy
Nipper, my REACH teacher from Spring-
dale Elementary, because I felt that she
made the greatest contribution of all she
got me started! Besides being my friend,
she fed my curiosity of new things. In
teaching us about things we were inter-
ested in, she taught us how to learn and
think. I would like to thank Ms. Nipper for
her boost of self-confidence. Nobody can
get anywhere without a little self-esteem.
We have to believe in ourselves, but its
nice when others believe in us, too.
Thanks, Ms. Nipper.

In 1976 our country celebrated its 200th birthday. Banners waved, flags flew, and Daddy
and Mommy celebrated the birth of our daughter. You were so anxious to enter this world
that we barely arrived at the hospital before you were born. From day one you have al-
ways been so full of life. We should have named you Joy instead of Jennifer, because you
have filled our hearts and life with so much of it. You were always the one who was aware
of our feelings. You made cards to give, even before you could write. Cards for every holi-
day, special occasion, or just if we were feeling blue. You made us pictures and crafts, all
with the same message, I Love You, always giving of yourself from your heart. Its ap-
parent to see what a beautiful young woman you have become, but those of us who know
you best know that your real beauty is an inner one. When God made you He made you
so very special. He planted a seed of love and compassion in your heart. We are proud to
call you ours. Your childhood has passed too quickly. We dont say goodbye, because you
will always live in our hearts. We dont say good luck because you have the potential to
be anything. Regardless of the path you choose to take, others will be blessed because you
have passed their way. We love you with all of our heart just for being our Boo.
Love,
Daddy and Mommy

I was concerned when I heard |
was getting a new student with the
physical problems that Lee had.
However, Lee quickly dispelled
these concerns, for he was the kind
of student that every teacher
dreams of having eager to learn,
enthusiastic about every new task,
always pleasant, and friendly to ev-
eryone. As time passed and hopes
faded, Lees greatest pleasure was
coming to school and he became a
real inspiration, an example of
courage. His presence made his

LIKE A DREAM
You have been, and will always be,
a friend;
In everything that you would do,
you'd win
Just letting everyone know, the
way you cared,
By a hug, a smile, a joke, or a song
you shared.
Like the flutter of a beautiful,
colored butterfly,
Your memory lingers, with
moments passing by.
As the sound of a trumpet note
sounding so bright,
The thoughts hang, as clear as a
chandelier lights
Though the question may linger,
as to the reason, why?
You may have left, but no, this
isnt good-bye.
The friends you made, both old
and young
Will honor your name in songs to
be sung.
Like a dream, your short life did
surely expand.
You were like a child, but you were
aman.
The affection you showed helped
us
To get through, so Carlos,
look down on us for we truly love
you.

IM FREE
Dont grieve for me, for now Im
free
Im following the path God has
laid you see.
I took His hand when I heard his
call.
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play,
Tasks left undone must stay that
way
I found the peace at the close of
day.
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joys.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too will
miss.
Be not burdened with times of
sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of
tomorrow.
My lifes been full, good times, a
loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too
brief.
Dont lengthen it now with undue
grief
Lift up your hearts, and peace to
thee.
God wanted me now, He set me
free.

You touched us all
You loved us all
Forever giving
Forever caring
Forever forgiving
Never wanting in return.
Blessed are those who shared your
life
Rich are those who carry your
memories
Please rest now
Your chores we will finish.
Til we meet again
We love you and miss you,
Your family and friends.
