ISDOM
An idea from Aristotle, a formula
from Einstein. .. Knowledge at its best.
Some say that to lear n by doing is how to
acquire knowledge. Others say it is to
listen to those that know. At SW you
take in both aspects of acquiring knowl-
edge and wisdom: by doing chemistry
experiments; interacting with other stu-
dents; listening to your parents, teach-
ers, and counselors. All will provide you
with valuable advice you need for the
present and for the future. The knowl-
edge that you acquire in school and at
home, and knowing how to apply this
knowledge is to have wisdom.
AY IT WITH
IGNITY
The admired George Washington,
the respected Martin Luther King, Jr. . .
Renowned men of dignity. The ability
to acquire admiration and respect is no
easy accomplishment. Events through-
out history have given us people of great
stateliness and integrity. There are also
many who acquire distinction within our
own surroundings: the caring teacher,
the student who brings honor to the
school, and the parent who is the source
of encouragement and guidance. These
people enhance the teaching of self re-
spect and esteem, which are found every
day at SW.
AY TT WITH
EELING
The tenderness of Mother Theresa,
the love of Romeo and Juliet... Per-
sonalities of affection. Experience
creates a multitude of feelings and emo-
tions in our lives. The ability to express
our innermost thoughts with compas-
sion and understanding can create an
atmosphere of gratification to oneslf and
to those with whom we have contact.
Some experiences result in excitement
while others may bring a lump to the
throat. During our years at SW we have
experienced thrilling triumph; defeat;
and the consoling words of a counselor,
teacher, or a friend.

FOOTBALL
Patriot Pride
This past season was not a phys-
ically good year for the Southwest
Varsity football squad. Most record
keepers would probably consider the
91-92 football season as being a los-
ing one, but not the students, faculty
members, and team members of
Southwest High. The Patriots
amazed crowds week after week as
they relentlessly led assaults on op-
posing teams. The team, led by only
a handful of skilled seniors, never
gave up. They were always walking
proudly away and never lowering
their heads to even give a hint of a
defeat. Not to mention the excep-
tional job on the part of the coaching
staff in keeping this years team at-
titude positive.
A teams record may say a lot
about that team but it can never even
begin to tell the true story of how
courageous this young and small
team really was on the field. Nev-
ertheless, our Patriots overwhelmed
several teams along their way in at-
tempting to better themselves and

with dignity and pride. This young
and courageous group of
Minutemen gave patriot fans a
whole lot of something to cheer
about as they rallied over Evans in a
21-0 asault at homecoming.
The coaching staff is looking
foward to next year, as they are ex-
pecting a lineup of experienced and
well-rounded individuals to present
to Patriot fans a great year of South-
west football.

City Champs One More Time!
The Southwest B-Team football
squad had an outstanding season.
This talented and hardworking
group of young men, led by expe-
rienced coaches such as Albert
Sharpe and Iris Hill, went undefeat-
captured the City-
Championship for the second year in
a row. The B-Team began the year
with a hard fought victory over
Northeast. It was a rainy day, just
typical for a group like this to hang in
and defeat N.E. by a score of 6 to 0.
This was an opening debut in which
the team finely displayed their goal
fulfilling ability. The next team
which fell victim to the squad was our
city rival, the Central Chargers. The
Patriots walloped the Chargers in a
thrilling 14 to 0 victory, that set the
pace in which the Patriots kept all
year. The group went on to defeat
two more teams, ending the year 4-0,
and sweeping the championship.
This year the Ninth Grade team
also had a goal fulfilling year. The
ed and
8 B-Team/Ninth Grade Football
team, coached by John Mathews and
Haywood Simmons, defeated
Northeast twice with scores such as 6
to 0 and 24 to 6. Further into the
year the squad tied Houston Co. ina
close game which had Patriot fans on
the edges of their seats. The gang
ended the season with a final record
of 2-2-1.

The 1992 Southwest wrestling
team had a good season as they wres-
tled their way to a 9-6 record and the
City Championship. The team was
short of experience as there were
only two returning seniors Brad Sim-
mons and Shay Hatcher. The squad
finished 3rd in the Southwest Invition-
al Tournament, 4th in the Area Tour-
nament, and 24th out of 72 teams in
the State Tournament. Coach Dan-
ny Grube says next years team
should greatly improve as twelve
members are returning. Among
those returning are Juniors Derail

Tim Hicks, and Sophomore Bennie

Against All
Odds!
The inexperience of the Lady Pa-
triots caused a great many problems
for the team. With only one return-
ing starter from the previous year
the odds were definitely against the
Lady Pats. The team finished the
season with a 1-17 record. The rec-
ord doesnt show that many of the
games were extremely close some
lost at the buzzer and even one in
double over-time. Retiring head
coach Albert Sharpe says he was
proud of this team because they
never quit. Sharpe was assisted by
David Reid and India Cater. The
Lady Pats were led by Seniors Tif-

Tradition Upheld Under New Leadership
Che winning tradition of Southwest
basketball is known throughout the
country. This season was no exception.
With only three experienced players re-
turning from last years squad, the
young, but talented Patriots upheld this
tradition. Under the leadership of new
head Coach Clyde Barden and Assis-
tant Coach Ronald Taylor the Patriots
finished the season with a 20-5 season.
[hey started off the season by com-
piling an 8-0 record before losing their
first game to LaGrange in the CITGO
Christmas Tournment in Griffin, Geor-
16 Boys Varsity Basketball
gia during the Christmas holidays. Af-
ter the Christmas break the team con-
tinued their winning ways earning a 15-
2 record before losing to Northeast 31-
33 in late January. Going into the Sub-
Region Tournament the Pats were 18-
4. They Northside in the
opening game 68-52 and won the Sub-
defeated
Region Championship in a double over-
time victory 72-70 over Baldwin Co. In
the semi-final game of the Region
Tournament in Augusta, the Patriots
lost a heart breaker to Northeast 44-46.
Chis loss kept the Patriots out of the
State tournament for the first time u
12 years. Even though the team lose
four outstanding players, they will be ;

Future
The Southwest Varsity Baseball
Team ended a relatively good season
with an overall record of 10-7 and 6-
4 in the Region. Coach Edgar Hatch-
er, who is in his fourth year as head
coach said for being a young team
they did a great job and expects next
year to be better.
Tim Hicks, who is only a junior,
had another solid season for the Pa-
triots. Tim, who plays shortstop and
occasionally the outfield, batted .468
with 7 homeruns and 32 runs batted
in. He pitched nearly 50 innings with
a 5-3 record.
Players who had good years for the
Patriot team: Brad Simmons, senior,
batted .355 and Tarik Goff had a
.362 batting average, with 6
homeruns and 32 runs batted in.
Other players who helped contribute
to the teams success were Charles
Halligan, Stacy Little, and Todd
Walker. Over the course of the
season, the Patriot baseball team had
a lot of close games and big region
wins. The team picked up their first
region win with a 6-2 victory over
Northside. Tim Hicks pitched a com-
plete game allowing only 4 hits.
On March 27, the team beat
Northeast 8-6. On that day, the Pa-
triots hit 3 homeruns as they piled up
10 hits overall. Todd Walker picked
up the victory that raised his record
to 2-0. The next day Clarke Central,
a team from Athens was the Patriots
next victim. On just 8 hits the team
scored 14 runs.
At the end of the regular season,
Southwest was tied with Northside.
In the playoff game Northside de-
feated the Patriots thus ending their
season.

Upcoming
Talent
The Southwest 1992 Junior Var-
sity team is a stepping stone for the
chance to play on the Varsity team.
For the most part the team played
hard, ending their season with 6
wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. Coached by
John Mathews, the team consisted
mainly of ninth graders with a few
tenth graders rounding out the ros-
ter. The young team members
gained experience and valuable play-
ing time which is necessary for their
upcoming Varsity years. Over the
course of the season, the team played
against their traditional rivals of
Central, Northeast, Warner Robins,
and Clarke Central from Ath-
ens. The players showed excellent
teamwork ability with their victories .

Golf at Southwest has not been a
dominant sport, but the players who
do participate give it their best ef-
fort. This year the team had some
exciting matches as they greatly im-
proved their golfing skills. Consisting
of four seniors and one junior the
team finished with a 3 2 record.
The number one player for each
match was determinined by the low
score of the player from the previous
match. Coach Richard Plagge hopes
that more boys and girls will show an
interest in golf in the future and help
build up the sport at Southwest.

The 1991-92 Southwest Soccer
team had a difficult season this year.
They played a tough schedule with
relatively few experienced players.
They finished the season with a rec-

was very supportive of the team and
looks forward to a more experienced
team next year.

TENNIS ===
Against the
Odds!
The 1991-92 season was a tough
one for the inexperienced tennis
teams at Southwest High School.
Both this years boys team, as well as
the girls team, played well against
the odds. The boys tennis team
ended the season with a 6-2 record
while the girls team finished 1-7.
Coach Iris Hill says she expects
great things from these young play-
ers in the future, particularly fresh-
man Ginger Wilder and twins Mi-
chael and Victor Belarmino, as well
as junior Inga Harmon. Hill said
both teams are very young, but both
have promising futures.

Outstanding
Year
The Southwest Junior Varsity had
an outstanding year! They cheered
Southwests B-Team football players
onto a glorius winning season. The
Patriot girls had an exciting week at
the Universal Cheerleading Associ-
ation Camp at West Georgia College.
They received a number of ribbons
of excellence and second place in the
dance competition. The squad was
under the leadership of Pat Jackson.
The girls really worked hard to have
an outstanding year.
Although the Ninth Grade cheer-
leading squad had a late start they
weren't deterred from showing their
Patriot spirit. The squad, under the
direction of Kristen Brewer, worked
hard after school to learn cheers and
chants to inspire their team to a vic-
tory.

ALL SPORTS PICNIC
Fun in the Sun
The All Sports Picnic sponsored
by the Pep Club was held on May 26
at Lake Tobesofkee. This annual
event honors all athletes, coaches,
and cheerleaders. The coaches ar-
rived early, fired up the grill and
cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for
everyone. After devouring all the
goodies, trophies and awards were
presented. The awards were made to
those who participated in wrestling,
baseball, track, soccer, tennis and
golf.
This year the Pep Club, under the
direction of Geraldine Dumas,
honored Ann Fugate and Albert
Sharpe. They were presented gifts
by the Pep Club in recognition of
their service to Southwest. Both of
them are retiring this year and will
be missed at Southwest.

SW Leaders
Say It With
Spirit
The ones who lead the spirited
Southwest Patriots get into the spirit
and are ready to fight. Complex
Principal Dr. Columbus Watkins is
always on top of things, that is, when
hes not out shooting the hoops. You
cant outsmart Willingham A Prin-
cipal David Reid at school or on the
courts. Another administrator that
keeps Southwest High in spirit is
Mrs. Jackie Richardson, Associate
Principal of Instruction, who really
pumps up our school spirit. Our oth-
er pro-athletes include: Jesse Mays,
Willingham B Assistant Principal,
who can always slug a homerun; Bill
Boyd , Assistant Principal, who never
fumbles in work or play; and last but
not least Director of Vocational Ed-
ucation, Charles Rogers, the tennis
star.
Our administrators work really
hard to ensure that things are run-
ning very smooth and efficiently.
Many students dont realize how
much pressure is put on the admini-
stators each day they are at school.
Even with all the responsibilities
these leaders have, they always seem
to make sure Southwest is successful
in all that we do. Our administrators
always say it with pride when it
comes to Southwest High School.

The Art of
Music
I love teaching and working with
young people. But, there is a part of
me that expresses through music,
mostly rap music. That is what Mr.
Gregory Cubit says about his music
hobby.
Mr. Cubit, who was inspired by the
Sugarhill Gang, began working in
music in 1986. From studio record-
ing to being a D.J., Mr. Cubit has
taken his hobby seriously. He hopes
to enter the music industry as an art-
ist/writer/producer. He is presently
on a demo tape for himself and also
for some local artist in the Middle
ia area.
Mr. Cubit says he hopes to make a
serious move into the industry and
come back to help others. He would
like most of all to be a positive role
model to his audience.

Goodbye
409!
If anyone has ever had Mrs. Cyn-
thia Warren-Ross you may have
heard her say I run 409. Not any-
more, Mrs. Ross has now gone from
English teacher to Motivational
Counselor as you may already know.
Mrs. Ross says she was happy in the
classroom, teaching English and that
she has also loved working with
young people; however, because of
the many problems that youths are
faced with, she decided to seek train-
ing in counseling. When asked which
one she liked better, she replied, I
love them both. The two jobs ac-
tually work hand in hand.
Mrs. Rosss advice to a younger
counselor is to try to be as real and
up-front as possible and to always be
honest.

Food for
Thought
Our lunchroom staff works very
hard to ensure that the students at
Southwest are well fed and ready to
learn. Not only do they provide us
with a well balanced lunch, but a
nutritious breakfast as well. In order
to do so, they must also arrive at
school as early as 6:30 AM every
morning to begin cooking a healthy
breakfast for those who do not have
time to eat at home. Then, of course,
the lunchroom staff must diligently
begin to cook up lunch for 1500 hun-
gry mouths.
Being responsible for making sure
that the students at Southwest have a
well balanced diet is not an easy task;
therefore, the lunchroom staffs
should be commended for a job well
done.

As a Christmas tradition at South-

the seniors with their version of the
Twelve Days of Christmas. Sheila Bell

the day would appear from behind

A strong bond links
seniors Amelia Cross
and David Krum-
mrich: their fascination
with art. Amelia has
been drawing since she
has been able to write.
Not encouraged by any-
one specifically, Amelia
gives her mother credit
for supporting her tal-
ents. She has won sev-
eral awards and hopes
to turn her passion into
a career.
Also an enthusiast of
drawing, David Krum-
mrichs interests go be-
yond the easle. Talent-
ed in drawing, David is
unique in his choice of
collecting; skulls are his
fancy, and he has col-
lected 15 skulls of all
kinds. David is definite-
ly an artist of unusual
taste.
She has really flipped!! Since the young age of seven, Cindy Chapman has
aspired to be a great gymnast. She first became interested when she saw her
father doing handsprings in the yard. After that Cindy decided to go to school.
Since then Cindy has competed in over fifty competitions and has won about
200 awards. She is a member of the U.S. Gymnastic Federation, AAY, and the
Gym Nests of Macon. She has traveled to several cities such as: Houston, TX.
(competed in Jr. Olympics); Hot Spring, AR. (won Arkansas Health Fest);
Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and Atlanta, GA. She won the Georgia State
Championships Class III in 1988.
In Cindys senior year, she had an injury and had to have reconstructive
surgery on her knee, but she hopes to coach gymnastics and even participate in
competitions again.
68 Seniors
Vanessa Stamps is really the cats meow.
She has been in love with cats since she was a
little girl of five years.
Since the age of ten, Vanessa has collected over
fifty cat items and has had eight live cats.
Vanessa has become a great lover of cats and
wants to pass her colllection on to her daughter,
Chirlonca, when she is old enough to enjoy them.
Chris Mulllis and Damiso
Lamb both enjoy the martial
arts. Influenced by his
friend, Chris became inter-
ested in karate in 1985. It
started out as something new
to try but became much
more. Since taking up the
sport, he has collected sev-
eral magazines and books,
and participated in tourna-
ments that have led to re-
gional and state champion-
ships. Chris also gives
demonstrations for various
organizations.
Damiso Lamb became in-
terested in the martial arts at
a young age while watching
Kung-Fu Theater, with
Bruce Lee serving as an in-
spiration. He has received
several medals and devotes
his time to teaching classes.
Damiso hopes that one day
he will own his own karate
school.
Flying has been
a passion of Tim
Clarks since he
was a child. While
most kids wanted
to be doctors, law-
yers, and firemen,
Tim wanted to be
a pilot. In a years
time, he has col-
lected seventeen
model airplanes.
Over a period
time Tim hopes to
increase this col-
lection.
Tim is more
than a collector of
model airplanes;
he actually flies
them. He is a stu-
dent at Flight
South. By the time
he graduates he
hopes to obtain
his private license.
Kevin Thomas and
Rearcous Smith share a
love of music. Kevin plays
numerous instruments,
such as: the piano, saxo-
phone, oboe, bassoon,
french horn and clarinet.
In the band Kevin plays a
different instrument every
season: saxophone
(marching season, spring
concert), bassoon
(Christmas), French Horn
(spring festival).
Kevin was influenced
greatly by his mother and
7th grade music teacher.
He plans to learn how to
play the trombone and
baritone. He strongly be-
lieves that everyone
should put their God giv-
en talents to use.
Rearcous Smith is very
active in the performing
arts, with performances of
singing, dancing, and act-
ing. He began singing at a
very young age with his
great-grandmother. Since
his younger days, he
played the leading role in
the play Purlie. He has
also won several trophies
for his singing talents.

Morp Is
Sdrawkcab
Morp is prom spelled backwards,
thus the sdrawkcab dance. This
years Morp was as wild and wacky as
ever. All who were present dressed
down and had a great time. This
has become an annual event spon-
sored by the Student Council. It is
held after first quarter final exams to
give students an opportunity to un-
wind. Students showed up in their
wildest outfits and danced to music
provided by Greg Cubit.

Steppin Higher
Than Ever
Under the leadership of Oscar
Jackson the Southwest Marching
Band still holds the title of the best
marching band in town. They are the
pride and glory of the many tradi-
tions at Southwest. The bands hard
work started long before school
opened. During the summer months,
band members were at school brav-
ing the sun to prepare for the up-
coming football season. Their hard
work paid off with the presentation
of three awesome shows at half-time
performances. The Country and
Western show was the hit of the year.
Dressed in country and western out-
fits, the band danced to the music of
many famous country and western
tunes. This show brought the crowd
to their feet with thundering ap-
plause.
After football season is over the
band doesnt stop performing. In De-
cember the band traveled to Atlanta
to march in the Christmas parade.
Here too, they were greeted with
enthusiastic applause and were also
highlighted on television by the local
broadcasters of WSB-TV. To help
celebrate the holiday season the band
held their annual Christmas concert
at the December PTSO meeting.
The highlight of the year was the
invitation to march in the Mardi Gra
Parade in Mobile, Alabama. They re-
ceived the honor of being the lead
band in the parade. Then came the
Cherry Bloosom Parade in Macon and
the Rose Parade in Thomasville,
Georgia. The band concluded their
season with a successful first an
evening outdoor concert at the
school. This was truly a year that
proved the members of the South-
west Band were Steppin Higher
Than Ever!

In every group there are leaders who

JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Talent and Perseverance
The Southwest Jazz Ensemble under
the direction of Oscar Jackson has al-
ways been known for their sweet music.
Their renown reputation is the result of
outstanding talent and perseverance. It
is well known that the marching band
works hard throughout the year, but
less well known that the members of the
Jazz Ensemble step and dance along
with the other band members at all
their performances. In addition, they
played at nearly every middle and el-
ementary school in the Macon area and
several Southwest events. These events
included the Yearbook Promotion
Show, the annual Sweetheart Corona-
tion, the Golden Eagle Awards cere-
mony, the Christmas concert, and the
Spring extravaganza. At the ABAC Jazz
Festival the group received a Superior
rating. Receiving Superior ratings for
their solos were Algernon Glover,
Lance Reid, Charlie Danielly, Emmett
Bivins, and Charles Lucas.

year the Student Council does many
activities in support of Spirit for
the school, which includes the pro-
duction of anything from banners
for a ballgame, to activity calendars
for the school.
Under the direction of the Student
Council advisor,Betty Stewart-

The Southwest chapter of the Na-
tional Beta Club participated in a va-
riety of activities in 1992 as they strived
towards excellence. This honor society
requires a minimum grade point aver-
age of 3.5 from its 122 members, and is
dedicated to the bettering of its school
and community.
Led by Mrs. Gwen Bell and Ms. Judy
Moore, along with officers Karla Nel-
son - President, James Robinson - Vice-
President, Carla Rhyne Secretary,
and Terrance Smith Treasurer, the
Southwest Beta Club has a record of
service and leadership. The motto,
Let us lead by serving others epit-
omizes the goal the club is determined
to reach. Through activities such as
bringing goodies for American Educa-
tion Week, making Easter baskets for a
nursing home, and donating items to
the Macon Rescue Mission, the club
hopes to bring a change for the better
to the Middle Georgia area. Another
project was Military Mail Call in which

At the State Beta Convention in At-
lanta, Karla Nelson presided as the
State Beta Secretary. The group also
participated in several competitions.
Winning first place in the talent com-
petion for their rendition of Amazing
Grace, were Kim Gilbert and James
Robinson. Yasmin Washington won
third place in the scrapbook compe-
tition. In the first ever oratorical com-
petition, Terrance Smith took first
place with his speech Unity Through
Diversity.
The final activity of the year was the
annual Beta Awards Ceremony. Nu-
merous awards were given to deserving
Beta members, and Ms. Moore gave out
her famous Beta Beagles. The event
ended with a Senior Spotlight and slide

The Voice of Southwest
The Southwest school newspaper,
The Patri-Article, has continued to in-
form the students of Southwest of all
events that took place during the school
year. This year the Patri-Article was able
to print four newspapers during the
school year. The advisor of the news-
paper is Ms. Sue Kalbfleisch, who is
serving her ninth year in that capacity.
Assisting Ms. Kalbfleisch were Co-
Editors-In-Chief Patrick Davis and
Danielle Boyd. During this past year
the staff attended two workshops. Par-
ticipating in the seminar at Georgia
College, the staff heard guest speaker,
Larry Munson, the Voice of the Geor-
gia Bulldogs. Later in the year the staff
traveled to the University of Georgia in
Athens to attend the GSPA Convention
and awards luncheon. Over the years
the Patri-Article has been honored by
the GSPA for its continuous service of
informing the students and faculty of
news at Southwest.
The creative Montage staff once
again produced an outstanding educa-
tional magazine for the enjoyment of
Southwest students. First year advisor,
Ms. Cathy Cargill, did an excellent job

The Southwest Chorus, con-

had an excellent year. The cho-
rus consisted of four talented
choirs: Kyrie. Womens Choir;

Newest Addition, Beginning

veloped, group of singers per-
formed at many functions.
Their year first began with a

Once again the Spanish club of
Southwest has completed another year
of bilengual excitement. The leaders
for this years club were: Christy Jones
as President, Maria Kitchens as Vice-
President, Ginger Wilder as Secreata-

The Spanish Club has made use of the
new language skills they have learned
by fluently speaking with natives that
live in the Macon area. The club of-
ficers did an excellent job of keeping
the members busy. Tanya L. Hum-
phries, first year advisor, made it pos-
sible for the members to experience
Mexican culture and food. They attend-
ed functions at various restaurants in
Macon, including dinners at Pollys La
Mesa and El Sombrero. At these din-
ners they were able to use their new
language by ordering their meals in
Spanish. They also enjoyed eating the
Mexican cuisine. This club is one that
combines having fun and learning at
the same time.
The Latin Club is a club created for
the enjoyment of the students. Several

As the years come and
go, some things stay the
same but fads and fash-

changing. The students

their individuality with

There were many new

bers dressed as an intriguing char-
acter of history.
All Social Studies teachers gave
their students the opportunity to par-
ticipate and the turn-out was out-
standing. The costumes worn by the
faculty and students displayed au-
thenticity and originality. The three
winners of the costume contest were:
3rd Patrick Hodges (Johnny Ap-
pleseed), 2nd Lucretia Clayton

Those students who preferred not
to dress up decorated posters to dis-
play in the halls. The posters, much
like the costumes, exuded positive
effort put forth by the students to
show their Patriot spirit.

Unforgettable!
Once again Southwest hosted its
annual Junior - Senior Prom at the
Macon City Auditorium. With the
prom colors, ice blue and pearl, ex-
pertly hung, draped, and set floating,
the auditorium definitely benefitted
the proms theme as
Unforgettable. Bobs Mobile
Sound provided the music to which
the students slammed, jammed, and,
of course, swayed to throughout the
night.
Senior lead out was one of the
highlights of the evening, followed
by the naming of Prom King and
Queen, which was Terrance Smith
and Teresa Whyche.

Prestige
For the first time, Southwest held
its Senior Honors ceremony in the
evening. This year the event was
held at the Grand Opera House and
began at 7:30 PM. The Opera House
added a touch of elegance to this
prestigious night.
The ceremony began with pres-
entations of academic scholarships
and various other awards. LaTonya

achievement as she received Woods-
man of the Year and numerous other
recognitions.
Other than academics, certificates

#1 TOY
Each year Bibb County salutes out-
standing educators for a job well
done. It also singles out the most
dedicated to be named Teacher of
the Year. Nominated by their respec-
tive schools and selecetd by a com-
mittee, the list of qualified teachers is
narrowed down to three. This years
recipient happened to be last years
first runner-up and one of our own
members of the Southwest faculty.
A teacher since the age of 19, Ann
Fugate has devoted her life to ed-
ucating the adolescents of Middle
Georgia. Having taught for numer-
ous years at Dudley Hughes (Bibb
Tech), Ballard A, McEvoy B, and
Willingham B of Southwest High
School, Ms. Fugates dedication to
teaching is to be tremendously re-
spected and admired.
Those students who have had the
opportunity of taking Ms. Fugates
ninth grade Citizenship/ Free En-
terprise/Geography (H) course can
relate to the exellence of her abil-
ities. Even those students who were
not taught by Ms. Fugate, but are
familiar with the 1992 TOY, ben-
efitted from her caring nature. Ms.
Fugate, better known to some as
Fruitcake or Fruity, teaches the
young minds at Southwest not only
book knowledge but also respect, for
oneself as well as for others, disci-
pline, and proper grammar. If youve
ever asked Ms. Fugate, Can I go to
the bathroom, you know that the
reply is always the same:I dont
know, can you?
As well as a great role model for
today, Ms. Fugate proves to be an
outstanding inspiration for tomor-
row. An encourager of dreams and
goals, Ann Fugate is the epitome of
the perfect teacher no doubt de-
serving her title of Bibb County
Teacher of the Year!
Congratulations
Ms. Fugate!
We Love You!

Soaring with
Stars and
Eagles
Southwest has been blessed with
many great minds this year, as every
year. Dedicated to honoring its ex-
cellent students, Southwest recog-
nizes its highest SAT scorer as STAR
student. This year Cindy Chapman
and Felicia Taylor tied with a score
of 1140. John Mathews and Trudy
Norris were named by the STARs
as STAR Teachers.
Another top recognition of stu-
dents is the Macon Telegraph's
Golden Eagle awards. Bibb County
students are nominated by their
schools in specified areas in which
they excell to be eligible for the
Golden Eagle. Southwest sent eleven
oustanding students to participate.
These students have definitely
brought honor to our school.

Wild and
Wacky!
The last full week of school was
full of excitement and emotion, es-
pecially for the seniors. Designated
as Senior Week, the upcoming grad-
uates were busy with a jam packed
schedule: rehearsing for honors
night, attending informative assem-
blies, and just being wild and wacky!
During the week, the Seniors were
also honored with a breakfast at
Shoneys and participated in Twin
and Tacky/Kiddie Days. Towards
the end of the week the excitement
was overwhelming as the Senior
Chant was heard again and again.
Participation was enthusiastic as the
seniors looked forward to their last
week of high school.

The final Friday of the school year
was a tremendous day for the Seniors
of 92! Following an assembly in the
morning, the seniors congregated in
the WB lunchroom to enjoy one final
feast together. Seated and served by
the Junior Guides, the upper class-
men munched ona meal prepared by
the lunchroom staff.
After the initial dining, a skit was
performed by selected seniors to en-
tertain their fellow classmates. De-

mons narrated a class reunion and
presented the future occupations and
interests of their friends - the scenes
were surprising, but could prove to
be true!

and noise level. Most faces were all

flight from high school; others were
slightly tear-stained as they thought
of the memories and were relunctant
to let go.
Led by the Junior Guides the
paired line of blue gowns marched
proudly in front of the audience and
waited to receive their hard earned
diplomas. Lashandia Griffin began
the ceremony by leading the Pledge
of Allegiance. Welcomed by
MarVetta Ammons, the senior class
grew nearer to becoming graduates.
Valedictorian, Cindy Chapman, ad-
dressed her classmates on the impor-
tance of friends, memories, and the
future. Karla Nelson followed Cindy
to the podium as second speaker, Sa-
lutatorian. Elected Senior speaker,
Terrance Smith, also addressed the
class as he spoke of family and spir-
itual values.
Proceeding the speakers, the Sen-
ior Class was recognized by Board of
Education member Don Hadaway as
having met all necessary reguire-
ments for graduation, and therefore
becoming the 1992 Graduates of
Southwest!
After the closing remarks by Jody
Holtzclaw, the graduates performed
their Senior song, Its So Hard to
Say Good-bye (To Yesterday), for
the final time. Marching off of the
Coliseum floor brought mixed emo-
tions: excitement, fear, joy, sadness,
and triumph!
After the diplomas were distrib-
uted, departure from the Coliseum
was slow but steady as these young
people stepped into the world on
their own!

Getting the Job Done!
Selected members of the SW stu-
dent body undertook the responsi-
bility of producing an important pub-
lication this year. The 1992 Annual
Staff has once again provided the
students and faculty of SW a memory
book to cherish for a lifetime. The
preparation for this years book be-
gan before the convening of the
school year. At Georgia Tech, mem-
bers of the annual staff were intro-
duced to layouts, croppers, gutters,
and intricate computer programs
tools necessary to create the year-
book. Being a fairly new staff, the
members still toughed it out and got
the job done as they have produced
the book in your hands.

Saying Good-bye to Our Fruity!
The Spirit of 92 lost a very important
member of its staff at the end of this
school year. Ann Fugate has been the
advisor of the SW yearbook for the past
seven years. Since she has taken the
reigns, Southwest has produced an
award winning book for the past five
years.
A teacher of 32 years, Ms. Fugate has
dedicated a numerous amount of hours
to education. However, none of the past
25 can total the enourmous amount of
time and effort she spent in the past
seven years devoting her time to the
yearbook. Most people probably dont
realize the time, energy , hardwork, and
dedication necessary to produce an im-
maculate book such as the SW annual. Ms.
Fugates schedule began upon her arrival
to school at 7 AM, and most days did not
end until 5 PM.
Her abilities and skills as a teacher and
advisor are tremendous, so many times she
has gone beyond the call of duty. Ann
Fugate has left her mark on Southwest
High school, and our lives. We hope that
next years staff and advisor can carry out
Fruitys legacy. Good luck guys, because
her path i is difficult to follow and her shoes
are hard to walk in.
Ms. Fugate,
lo the teacher we've all grown to love, who has
stood by us through the good and bad times
You have taught us more than book knowledge
you've taught us how to work hard for what we
want, no matter how tough it gets. You have been
greatly appreciated throughtout the years that we
have all known you! We cant say enough for our
appreciation
Throughout this year,
kinds of

impact on our minds. We are sorry to see you go
but we know deep down inside that you will never
we've put up with all
all of the good
you will leave an

Its Been Fun!
At the closing of last year we were ap-
proached with the idea of being the editors
of the Spirit of 92. After a little deliberation,
we decided that since the task was such a
major one, and our schedules all ready de-
manding, we would tackle this job together.
Our school year began in August when
we, Ms. Fugate, and five other staff mem-
bers attended a workshop at Georgia Tech.
Here is where we developed the theme and
skeleton of the book. From there everything
went downhill; of course, with an occasional
bump, or two, or ten, suffered along the
way. For example, the most dreadful was the
imminent chance of not having a book be-
cause of lacking funds. Ms. Fugate dug in
and restricted our budget very tightly and we
were allowed to produce the book but,
we had a loss of color. Ms. Fugate redrew
the senior section so that we could at least
have the class pictures in color, everything
else would have to be in black & white.
Sorry Guys! Of course there were other mis-
haps, for example, Diana almost broke both
computers and erased the annual off of the
disk, and of course Cindy was always there
to fix things.
Despite the bad times, we have had many
great ones. As editors of the book we have
learned excellent lessons of responsibility
and a few other skills, for example, adding a
little bull crap to copy so that it fits its
designated areas and posing for pictures.
We've also gotten the opportunity to meet
new people and to share in the closeness of
friendships that existed this past year. As
the book came to a close we were extremely
grateful, yet more so sad. After 3 1/2 years
of being on the annual staff we were losing a
major part of our lives, and we mean MA-
JOR! The pressure was always intense, but
we stuck it out until the very end.
We are very proud of the work that we
and the staff have accomplished. We wish
that each of you can flip through the pages
and laugh as you remember the times that
you experienced this past year, as we will. It
was a great experience, and we offer you
this book in hopes that you cherish it and
never forget the faces, people, and places.
On a final note, we would like to extend
our sincere gratitudes to the SW faculty who
assisted us in our fundraising Thank
You! To Angela, Patricia, and Mandy
thank you for your support of us and our
short tempers, you mean a lot to us. And
especially to Ms. Fugate, thank you for al-
ways being there to help us out, as you did,
often, and being our friend. We love you
dearly, and we'll miss you more!
