Designing the Parts
design: to prepare the plans for; to plan and fashion skillfully.
Before creating any good machine, there must be a
design. If the machine is going to function for any length of
time, the design had better be good. A machine is only as
good as the parts. The Southwest drawing board re-
ceives input from many engineers," each of whom is
involved at some stage in the overall design process.
Parents provide the initial raw material. Registrars, book-
keepers, lunchroom staff, custodians, faculty, adminis-
trators, secretaries, campus security no contribution is
insignificant. The plans are developed and the design is
drawn up.

Assembling the Parts
gear: a moving part receiving or imparting force by means of cogs
engaging with cogs in a corresponding part; possible combination
of such parts.
Once the design receives approval, the parts move on to
the assembly line. The labor force takes over now.
Southwest's faculty instructs and works with each com-
ponent until they are sure they have received enough
drilling of facts, have been oiled with encouragement,
tempered with humor, and polished to a shine before
being passed on to the final stage.
Testing the Parts
machine: an apparatus consisting of interelated parts with separate
functions, used in the performance of some kind of work.
At last the finished product is ready for testing. Years of
planning, re-designing, instruction and polishing have been
implemented. The question is - will it function? It must be
tested for fatigue and load efficiency before it can be
given a final seal of approval. The metals are strong, the
design good, the assembly the best possible. The testing
begins. Students go for job interviews, prepared by vo-
cational training. They take SATs and ASVAB for college
or military service. The Big Red Machine rolls into
athletic scholarships for many students. The testing com-
pleted, the machines now fully geared are ready to make
things happen. . .

FOOTBALL
Awesome Comeback
What's this? The SW Patriots made a
reverse play!" After a disappointing 88
season last year, the team finished with
a final record of 8-2 for its regular sea-
son and 8-3 for post season play. As if
that wasn't enough this great team tied
the school record for the most wins in
Southwest history.
What could have caused a team to
change so drastically in just a few short
months? Maybe new recruits? No, the
team was made up of mostly the same
players as last year. OK, maybe it was a
new coaching staff. No way! They had
the same coaches, too. It was a rebirth
of spirit and determination in a team
who had it all along, but never realized it.
With the help of a great coaching staff
and a team who was willing to be just
that, a team. They worked together and
kept each other going. They began the
season by winning their first game
against Benjamin Banneker by a score
of 21-6.
After that win it didn't take long for
the school and fans to get back behind
the Big Red Machine." With everything
intact, the team rolled over a major rival,
Baldwin County, in the second game.
The Pats were handed it's first disap-
pointment of the year, losing to Butler
21-7. The teams fourth game was a loss
but definitely not a disappointment. The
Patriots dominated the Warner Robins
Demons in the second half of the game,
but came up shy of a victory. The next
victory the Patriots took was from
Northside, 14-11, in the International Ci-
ty Stadium.
The Pats didnt stop there. They went
on to defeat Evans 39-12, Northeast 21-
13, Southeast 44-0, and Hephzibah 42-
14, for the City Championship. And to
guarantee the awesome Red Machine
a place in the Post Season play-offs,
they defeated cross-town rival Central
7-6. The final record of the '89 season
was 8-3, in a tie with the school record
for the most Southwest wins.

Football Team placed ten players on the
All-City Football Team. Linebacker
Marquis Daniels made 107 tackles, 8
quarterback sacks, and caused 5 fum-
bles. Another linebacker Kelvin Oliver
made the city squad by making 148
tackles and intercepting 3 passes.
Southwest's best man-to-man defender
was defensive end Art Cummings. De-
fensive back Jack Parks broke up 4
passes and had 3 interceptions. Punter
Marcus Andrews made the team by
averaging 49.1 yards per punt. Linemen
Michael Moore and Derek Dumas
made the All-City squad by grading out
90% in their blocking. Receivers James
Flowers and Charlie Simmons had an
outstanding year. Flowers had 23 catch-
es for 611 yards and 5 touchdowns,
while Simmons had 39 catches for 537
yards and 4 touchdowns. Charlie, one of
Southwest's top college prospects,
signed to play for Georgia Tech. Quar-
terback Joe Dupree, showed why he
was one of the state's top recruits by
completing 94 passes for 1,489 yards
and 12 touchdowns. He signed to play
with the University of Georgia. South-

Young Talent
The 1989 B-Team football team had an-
other squad of talented young men. The
squad, coached by Iris Hill, impressed
Southwest fans with victories over North-
east, Central, and Southeast. After a 28 to 14
loss to Baldwin, the team won their next four
games. The team finished a good season
with a 4-2 record and won the city cham-
pionship. Kareem Champ Brown was
the leading scorer with nine touchdowns.
With the winning attitude of these fine young
men, the Varsity football team can look for-
ward to many more succesful seasons.
The fall of 1989 was a learning experience
for the Southwest Ninth Grade team. Al-
though the team finished with a 0-4 record,
the team played with pride and determi-
nation. The hardwork displayed by these
young players will make good additions to
the future B-Team and Varsity football
teams.

Lady Pats Stay Optimistic
The 1989-90 season for the South-
west Lady Patriots was another suc-
cessful year for a relatively young and
inexperienced team. They compiled a
16-6 record and won the Savannah Hol-
iday Classic Tournament. Coaches Al-
bert Sharpe, Iris Hill, and David
Reid felt the girls won more games than
they had anticipated at the beginning of
the season. The team had only three
experienced players returning from last
years Region Champions seniors
Larita Knight and Latarsha Harvey
and junior Lisa Howard. Rounding out
the starting five were juniors Taniece
Smith and Tonya Woolfolk.With the
loss of Knight at mid-season, freshman
Asa Grant was thrust into a starting
16 Girls Varsity Basketball
position. The team then looked to How-
ard and Harvey for their offense. Both
these players were excellent outside
shooters and could also drive to the
basket. Lisa Howard finished the season
averaging 16 points and 8 assists per
game. Latarsha Harvey averaged 15
points and 8 rebounds per game.

Pats Win Region With 12-0 Record
The talented Southwest Patriots con-
tinued their winning tradition by having
another outstanding season. Coached by
Don Richardson, Clyde Barden, and
Ronald Taylor, this team proved to be
the best in Region 2AAAA by finishing
with a perfect 12-0 region record. The
thriller of the season was the game be-
tween Southwest and Baldwin. The
game ended 82-81 in Southwest's favor
after FIVE overtimes. Reginald
Manuel hit the winning free throw with
no time remaining on the clock to end
two hours and 45 minutes of exciting
basketball. Manuel finished the game
with 35 points and Charlie Simmons
had 20 points.
Another exciting experience for the
Patriots was their trip to Chicago, Il-
linois, to play in the Windy City Classic
during the Christmas holidays. De La
Salle of Chicago handed the Patriots
their first loss of the season 56-44, but
Southwest came back the following two
games defeating Flint Central of Mich-

another successful season,
The
Patriots played an inspired Baldwin
team for a third time, but Southwest
cruised to the Sub-Region title with a 75
55 win. Charlie Simmons was the
game high scorer with 24 points in-
cluding four 3-pointers. The win secured
Southwest home-court advantage in the
Region playoffs. Their first opponent in
the region play was city rival Central.
Southwest defeated them 107 to 81, and
then defeated Butler by breaking the
century mark again with 103 to 68 vic-
tory to win the region 2AAAA title. This
Win qualified the Patriots for the state
tournament. First round opponent for
Southwest was Carver of Columbus.
Southwest won the game 56 to 34 with
Sharone Wright leading the way with
19 points. The Patriots then defeated
Griffin 55-40 with Charlie Simmons
scoring 26 points.
The Patriots then headed to Atlanta

to an end at the hands of Columbia in an
69-60 Even in defeat
the Southwest Patriots exhibited their
true class on and off the court and ended
overtime game
a 25-3 season still number one in the
hearts of all their supporters.
During the season, the Patriots were
led by Reginald Doc
Sharone Wright. Both players were
selected to the All-City and All-Middle

outstanding young golfer.
The team was made up of young and
inexperienced players who tried as hard
as they could to help the team out. The
1990 golfers traveled to Greensboro to
play in the Region Tournament, they
placed in sixth at this competition Jeff
Marshall brought a win to the team as he
placed third in the City Tournament.
The Patriots played hard all year long
showing both pride and determination.
With a few players returning, they are
looking forward to another good season.

The Patriot Soccer team started their
second season with team of young, in-
experienced players. Their season
ended with a record of four wins and
three losses. The Patriots lost their first
game to an experienced Dublin team, 8-
2. In their second game, the Patriots
skills showed improvement, as they
beat Southeast 3-0, in overtime. Al-
though they lost against Dublin, the
team was victorious over Perry and
Southeast. In a show of spirit, the Pa-
triots played Central for the City Cham-
pionship, losing 6-2.
Southwest showed their pride and
spirit the second time around and are
looking forward to next year.

SW Smashers
The SW Smashers were coached by
Iris Hill. She coached the girls team to
a record of three wins and four losses.
The boys team had a record of four
wins and three losses. Both boys and
girls teams are only losing one player
this year, so the upcoming year looks
promising. Most of the members from
both teams were first year players. In
the Region 2AAAA, the girls lost out in

Cheerleaders Rally Crowd
Behind every great team, such as
ours, is a group of hard working cheer-
leaders. While their jobs may appear to
be all fun and games, the truth is, these
very dedicated ladies put in several
hours a week practicing their routines.
The Varsity Cheerleaders cheer faith-
fully during football season and the long
basketball season. These girls put forth
every effort to give support to our ath-
letes, and our winning records show just
how well they do.
The cheerleaders have many fund-
raisers each year, such as candy sales,
to pay for the cheerleading camp they
attend during the summer. This year the
tedious work paid off. They raised
enough money to go to Chicago, Illinois,
42 Varsity Cheerleaders
to cheer for the boys basketball team
when they played in the Windy City
Classic during the Christmas holidays.
This year's great group of cheerleaders
was under the capable direction of She-
lia Bell.

The
Cheerleader
The 1989-90 Southwest Jr. Varsity
Cheerleading squad consisted of nine
exceptional young ladies. At UGA's
Cheerleading Camp, the girls received
an Award of Excellence. Under the guid-
ance of Mrs. India Cater, the Jr. Var-
sity Cheerleaders truly perfected and
boosted the traditional image of The
Cheerleader.
Besides all the hard work on the field,
the cheerleaders also sold football pro-
grams for the football team. They have
already begun to plan for summer camp.

ees True Spirit
The Ninth Grade Cheerleading Squad,
coached by Mary Cliett, demonstrated
strong support for the ninth grade teams
at Southwest. Every year the Ninth
Grade Cheerleaders look forward to the
Homecoming game because they have
the opportunity to cheer along with the
Varsity Cheerleaders. They really ex-
pressed their enthusiastic spirit that
night.
Along with their other events, they
sold doughnuts to help raise money for
the Ninth Grade Basketball banquet.
Through their outstanding performance
the girls showed their true spirit
throughout the year. These girls are
looking forward to advancing to the B-
Team and Varsity squads.

Southwests Executives
Every good factory has to have a Board Room. In that
room, or suite of offices are the Chairman of the Board, the
C.E.O. and other executive personnel. In the Education Busi-
ness they are referred to as Principals. Southwest has been
fortunate in the past as well as the present, to have had CEO's
of the highest caliber. Mr. Gerald Stuart serves as the
Complex CEO (Principal). He sets the standards for the entire
school to follow. Mr. Jesse Mays , First V.P. (Assistant
Principal) handles the daily problems of running a business
.. .which is usually disruptive workers" (students). Mrs. Jack-
ie Richardson, Production Manager, (Assistant Principal of
Instruction) approves the plans and makes sure that the Plant
Supervisors (teachers) are on task. Mr. Charles Rogers,
Technical Engineer (Principal of Vocational Building), makes
sure that the vocational interests of the students are served. In
the Willingham A Plant, Mr. John Grenga serves as CEO. He
is assisted in those duties by Mrs. Grace McCormick .
Southwest is one of many plants in the Bibb County Cor-
poration. Chairman of the Board is Dr. Thomas Hagler, who
serves as Superintendent of Bibb County Schools. He has been
with the Bibb System for nine years and has implemented
many changes in the factories through his emphasis on
excellence in the product. Mr. William Bell is Assistant
Superintendent for Secondary Education. Mr. Bell has been
with the company for over thirty years. Dr. Thomas Mad-
ison is the Deputy Superintendent of this corporation. With
this Board there is no question of a successfully geared product.

Hobby
Collecting baseball cards is a real
family affair for Coach Danny
Grube. He and his four brothers have
been collectors since they were young
children. Today, Coach Grube shares his
hobby with his three children.
I've collected baseball cards since |
was in the first grade. | played baseball
almost everyday when | was growing
up. ..| guess thats what got me inter-
ested in the cards.' He is especially
proud of a Mickey Mantle Rookie Card.
His collection consists of mostly pre
1970's cards, but he does own quite a
few newer ones, such as 25 of Jose
Cansecos rookie cards. They may be
valuable some day. | don't collect for the
money, | just love baseball. Coach
Grubes collection consists of over
10,000 cards and includes another spe-
cial card, former Southwest Patriot, Mil-
ton Cuylers Rookie Card.

Excellence

Education
Mrs. Christine Kpor recently re-
ceived the Bibb County Special Ed-
ucation Teacher of the Year Award.
She is a member of the Council for
Exceptional Children and the Georgia
Association for Educators. Mrs. Kpor
studied at Georgia College and Memphis
State University. She has never thought
of Special Education as being anything
more than offering extra help for those
who need it. She has travelled exten-
sively throughout Europe and Africa and
lived in Monrovia, Liberia, for five years.
Her favorite pastimes are listening to
soothing music, collecting mugs, and
helping others help themselves.
Southwest's Teacher of the Year for
1990 was Ms. Ann Fugate and the
nominee from our school for Bibb Co.
Teacher of the Year. As one of the three
finalists Ms. Fugate was runner-up for
this honor. She has a B.S. degree from
the University of Tennessee at Chat-
tanooga and an M. Ed. from Georgia
College. After twenty-eight years of
teaching Ms. Fruitcake, as she is af-
fectionately called, still loves working
with young people. At Southwest she
teaches Social Studies, advises the
Yearbook Staff, and keeps the
scorebooks for the Varsity Basketball
teams. Outside of school Ms. Fugate
loves her bowling. She was named
Macon's Bowler of the Year in 1980.

Thank You
The students of Southwest High
School want to send a very special
thank you to the lunchroom staffs of
Willingham A and B. Their day begins
around 6:30 am when they arrive at
school to begin scrambling eggs and
frying bacon. After breakfast they begin
to prepare us a well balanced meal for
lunch. Our lunch usually consists of one
meat, two vegetables, and a dessert of
our choice.
We the students, sometimes forget
how hard our lunchroom staff works.
Cooking food, especially in the summer
when there is no air conditioning
(Willingham B) can be very hard work.
So the next time you go through the
lunchline and the staff is waiting to
serve you with a smile, remember how
hard they have worked and say Thank
You.

*Seasons Greetings from the Faculty
Christmas would not be the same with-
out the faculty's performance of the
Twelve Days of Christmas. The faculty
puts on this great skit annually for the
Senior class. The teachers continue to put
on a show that displays their Christmas
spirit. Milking maids, leaping lords, and
dancing ladies got the seniors rocking with
Christmas spirit. Everyone laughed when
Mr. Stuart, Mr. Mays, and Mrs. Rich-
ardson portrayed the drummers of the
Southwest Marching Band. After the skit,
the teachers provided the seniors with
Christmas goodies. The students really en-
joyed the performance and will always
cherish it.

If there is anything you

Jimmy Melton has been
working on the railroad
since he was six years old.
His interest in trains began
when he visited Chattanoo-
ga, Tennessee, and saw the
model train layout. His father
helped him construct a mod-
el village, complete with
mountains, stores, and hous-
es. Jimmy has almost 200
engines and cars which pass
through tunnels and through
his town. He has boxcars, tank-
ers, flatcars, and of course, a
little red caboose. Other than
model trains, he also has a col-
lection of pewter trains. Jimmy
has a genuine engineer's cap
which came from the railroad
museum in Strasburg, Pennsyl-
vania. He also has a collection
of railroad paraphernalia,
which includes patches, key
chains, belt buckles, spikes,
and pictures. Although he
will be leaving the trains be-
hind when he leaves for col-
lege, Jimmy will be a heck-
uva engineer. Jimmy is
going to Georgia Tech.

If music is the
international language,
then Dennis Henry, Chris
Griffin, and Ken Jones can
really speak the language!
Dennis has been playing the
trumpet for six years. He
says he expresses himself
through his music. He per-
forms with Southwest's
Marching Band and Jazz En-
semble and the All-State Jazz
Workshop.
Chris took his first piano les-
son when he was nine. He has
earned superior ratings in fes-
tival competitions. He is work-
ing on his own compositions
and hopes to become one of the
best musicians of all time.
Ken's goal is to be the best
bass player in the world. He
began playing bass four
years ago and plans to study
music in college. He, too,
performs with Southwest's
Jazz Ensemble, and has re-
ceived recognition by the
Georgia Association of Jazz
Educators and the Macon
Kiwanis Club. His dream of
becoming a studio musician
is rapidly becoming reality.

She believes in the magic
of carousel horses. Kristina
Clinard surrounds herself
with statues, pictures, and
even a blanket of these
beautiful horses. Kristina has
it all. She began to collect
carousel paraphernalia while
vacationing in New Hamp-
shire, a state known for its
champion horses. I just
love horses in general, but
there is a special beauty and
magical quality in a carousel
horse." Kristina enjoys read-
ing and working with people,
too. She is certain to con-
tinue her collection after
high school. Who knows?
Someday she may have a
real life size carousel in her
yard!

DeWayne Richardson
just loves the water! He has
been skiing since the early
age of eight. DeWayne has
delighted his friends with his
tricky stunts. He slaloms
(skiing with one ski) and also
rides his kneeboard. He can't
wait for the warm weather to
arrive so he can get out on
the water. Sometimes he
doesnt wait he skiis in
cool temperatures, too.
DeWaynes current interest
is in wind-surfing. He should
have no problem continuing
his hobby because DeWayne
plans to have a career in Ma-
rine biology. He'll probably
grow gills before the Class of
90's tenth reunion.

Super Seniors
Macon's Central City Park
has been the sight of many
special events, from horse
shows, to ball games, to the
annual Georgia State Fair.
It's ponds, fountains, and ga-
zebo hold a little bit of south-
ern charm for Maconites and
also for visitors who come to
the city.
Each year the seniors at
Southwest select their favorites
from the members of their
class to represent them as
Southwest's Super Seniors.
They excell academically,
physically, and socially to be
the best in their class. This year
those special seniors are: Most
Academic - Nolita Woolfork
and James Fordham; Most
Likely to Succeed - Lisa Her-
ring and Robbie Romeiser;
Most Athletic - Trece Dinkins
and Joe Dupree; Best Dressed

ley; Best All-Around- Erica
Jaskula and Charles Allen;
Most Popular- Skyla Talton

ited- Sharon Hughes and Derek

The Spirit of 90 Staff
would like to congratulate
these outstanding students.
They are the best of the best
and we hope that they can
live up to their titles as
superlatives. They are
part of the reason why
Southwest is on top, where
we belong.

Warren Cray, Vice-President of the
Southwest Beta Club, became President
of the State Beta Club in early February.
Not only was this a personal victory for
Warren, but this was a victory for all
Beta Club members and advisors. War-
ren's leadership qualities helped him
take charge of the convention and with
the help of his fellow members, the slo-
gan Stick with Cray! He'll make your
day!"" became famous. The spirit of
Southwest was strongly displayed as
everyone rallied behind Warren.
Congratulations to Warren Cray and
the entire Southwest Beta Club for a job
well done!

Beta Club
Serving the Community with Pride
The Southwest chapter of the National
Beta Club has once again served its com-
munity with pride. The Beta Club is an
honors society focused on aiding the com-
munity in various ways. To become a Beta
member, a student must earn a 3.6 GPA,
and maintain a 3.5 GPA to remain in the
club.
The Beta Club participates in a number
of service projects each year. The 1989-90
school year was no exception. The mem-
bers of the club made goodies for the
teachers during American Education
Week. There was an event called military
mail call, in which letters and cards were
sent by Betas to military persons over seas.
At Christmas time, the club sent $100 to
the relief fund for Hurricane Hugo victims.
On Valentine's Day, sweethearts received
suckers sold by the Beta Club. In con-
tinuing with their goal to serve those less
fortunate, Betas collected personal hygiene
items for the Macon Rescue Mission and
sent Easter baskets to local nursing homes.
At the State Beta Convention in February,
Southwest Betas campaigned vigorously
for Junior Warren Cray as he ran for the
office of State President. Wearing T-shirts
and chewing gum wrappers, Betas urged
State members to stick with Cray.
The Beta Banquet was held May 15, for
Beta members only. Betas were treated to
dinner, at the Willingham B lunchroom.
Advisor, Judy Moore presented Beta Bea-
gles to selected members. Also at the ban-
quet, next years Beta officers were an-
nounced.

PRESIDENT,
Cray Elected!
The enthusiastic Southwest Betas
pulled up to the Atlanta Hyatt-Regency
Hotel looking forward to a weekend full
of excitement, fun and memories. The
convention consisted of inspirational
speakers, get aquainted dances, col-
orful skits, and dignified campaign
speeches. The slogan 'Stick with Cray
seemed to be the most popular theme
known at the Georgia State Beta Con-
vention mainly because Southwest
Betas campaigned with the most spirit,
pride, and confidence. With these same
qualities, Warren Cray was able to cap-
ture the title and office of State Pres-
idency.
TOP, LEFT TO RIGHT: Warren Cray runs for
state Beta President. Marvetta Ammons, Joel
Stenson, and Kristie Peugh help with the Cray
campaign.MIDDLE, LEFT TO RIGHT: Bob Hen-
derson shows his spirit by being the already been
chewed piece of gum. The Beta Queens exemplify
all the qualities needed to be a Super Beta. No
matter what your choice of chew Warren Cray is
the one for you.

Latin Club
Optime!
This year, under the leadership of the
new advisor, Robert Fightmaster, the
Southwest Latin Club once again
showed its compassion and consider-
ation for the community. The new ser-
vice project for the year was the adop-
tion of a needy family for Thanksgiving
and Christmas. Latin students carried
food to this family.
To add a new twist to the traditional
jerseys, the Latin Club members de-

Math Team
Dedicated
Mathematicians
Not many students are willing to be at
school at 5:30 A.M. on Saturday morn-
ings, to spend the day solving com-
plicated math problems. This is a fa-
miliar scene in the life of a SW Math
Team member. They spend time before
and after school trying to learn the-
orems, formulas, etc.
The Math Team got off to a good start
this year. Both Jr. Varsity and Varsity
teams have been busy studying in order
to stand out beyond the rest. Their ad-
visors have worked hard to insure that
when Southwest leaves a competition,
they've done their best.

The Southwest Computer Club are
getting ready for the future, under new
leadership of Milton Ivery. They were
involved in a numerous amount of ac-
tivities this year. The club visited the
Sears Claims building to study the dif-
ferent types of claims, such as accident
home fires, and real estate claims. They
attended many other computer facilities
to learn about the many functions of the
computer. This gave the members a
chance to learn more about the many
opportunities available to them in the
future computer world.

Stars of Tomorrow
The Academic Team sharpened more
than their pencils this year. The mem-
bers of this group worked hard to sharp-
en their wits! Academic competition is a
challenging way for students to compete
with teams from other schools in a
Battle of Brains. The team answers
questions on a variety of subjects in
competitions on county and state levels.
Thanks to the advisor, Mr. James
Barfield, Southwest is able to compete
in numerous academic meets through-
out the school term.
This year's Science Club was advised
by James Hinson and Richard Mer-

years club is noted for their help in
organizing and judging the 1990 Bibb

Octagon Club
On The Roll Again
The Southwest Octagon Club was on
the roll again this year. The club, ad-
vised by Mrs. Leigh Ann Raby, did an
outstanding job this year in serving their
community as. well as serving students
and teachers at their school. The mem-
bers of the club held a fun filled Hal-
loween party for the members of the
Macon Health Care Home. The mem-
bers returned to the home in December
with fruit baskets for the residents. This
visit certainly helped to make their
Christmas a little more memorable. In
February, Octagon members made Val-
entine cards for the home to show the
residents that someone cared for them.
The club also made gifts for the teach-
ers of the Southwest Complex during
Teacher Appreciation Week. For such a
small club, this turned out to be a very
active year.

Mock Trial
Order In the Court
This year, a new group has emerged
on the Southwest Campus the Mock
Trial Team. This group of students was
organized by John Mathews in an ef-
fort to give students an opportunity to
learn more about the judicial system.
They did this through participation in a
real case, as well as a Mock Trial.
The Mock Trial Team had the priv-
ilege of working with two local attorneys
at law, Hal McCord and Brian Pas-
sante. The two attorneys coached them
in practice in order to prepare them for
competition. Through hard work and
determintion, the team went on to win
third place in the Region Mock Trial
Competition. Several of the team mem-
bers have plans of pursuing a career in
law.

Spreading Happiness
The Leo Club continued in the great
tradition, as always, in spreading joy to
those in need. Supervised by Sue Kalb-
fleisch,and sponsored by the local
Southside Lions Club, the club partic-
ipated in many worthwhile civic proj-
ects. In a visit to the Georgia Academy
for the Blind, members played games
and talked with the blind students. The
members also took the time to throw a
series of parties for the students. In
October there was a Halloween Party,
followed by a Christmas Party in De-
cember. On Valentines Day the Leo
Club shared the love in their hearts with
the children by giving them a party. The
Leo Club has proved that it is possible to
shine a little light on even the darkest of
days.
The Southwest club was recognized in
the National Leo Magazine for their
many outstanding contributions to the
community.

America accomplished more tasks this
year than any of the past years. Under
the supervision of Erik Thompson, the
club helped decorate Macon as a part of

During the Spring, the club once
again sold greenhouse grown poinsettias

and faculty. The club then went to tour
the Jarrell Plantation, while there, they
studied and learned about the growth of
plants. Towards the end of the year,
they began a tree and shrub production

The Cutting Edge
There's more to the Southwest Cos-
metology Club than just perms and hair-
cuts. The members of this club are also
very active in their community. In No-
vember, they collected canned goods to
give to the needy of Macon for Thanks-
giving. They again showed their concern
for their community by collecting toys
at Christmas time for the Salvation
Army. The Cosmotology Club also
brought in women's and babies clothes
for the battered women and children at
the Macon Rescue Mission.
As a celebration for such a productive
year, the club held their annual Cos-

den. They ended the year with a fun-
filled trip to Six Flags.

Not only is the Art Club a club in
which people express themselves
through their art, but also it is a club that
demonstrates caring and sharing. The
Art Club is advised by Dannah Gra-

the Harrison Retirement Home. Also,
they took valentine candy to the Har-

again for Easter. In April, the club vol-
unteered to make poster advertisements
and mile marker signs for the March of

Pep Club
Energized!
Webster describes pep as full of en-
ergy, liviliness, vigor, and spirit." That is
exactly what the Southwest High School
Pep Club is about. It organizes many
functions and trips which support our
teams and other organizations. They
also maintain a very valuable place in
the hearts of the new students, thanks
to the club advisor Mrs. Geraldine
Dumas.
The Pep Club started out fresh this
year with a funeral for our rival team,
Central High School. In February, the
Pep Club sponsored the Sweetheart Cor-
onation, to raise money and also pro-
mote school spirit.
In the spring, the Pep Club took its
annual trip to Six Flags. This trip is
organized to provide fun and relaxation
for the students, in a supervised and
organized manner. It gives the students
an opportunity to enjoy a Saturday out-
ing with their friends.
The Pep Club ended the year with the
All-Sports Cook Out, to show appre-
ciation to all SW athletes for the 89-90
season. The outing was held at Lake
Tobesofkee.
Not only is the Pep Club full of vigor
and spirit, but it also encourages the
students to be too!

Getting Down to
Business
The Future Business Leaders of
America at Southwest are once again
proving to be leaders for our future.
They have been busy year-round par-
ticipating in a variety of activities. In
November, the FBLA traveled to At-
lanta, where they took part in the annual
FBLA State Convention. The purpose
for participation in the convention was
to sharpen their skills in the various
fields of interviewing, transcribing, typ-
ing, and other skills pertaining to the
rapidly changing business world. In Feb-
ruary, the FBLA was invited to take part
in the region competition, which was
held in Peach County. To help support
the activities they participated in, the
FBLA held fundraisers during the year,
such as candy sales, among others. Year
after year, FBLA shows that they are
leaders by continiously serving the com-
munity and Southwest.

this image throughout the school and
the community. This year VICA pre-

The members of VICA are proof that
this is an honorable organization. Some
of these members participated in area
competitions of vocational skills, held in

Unlocking Hearts
The Key Club accomplished many
goals as they unlocked their hearts and
tended to others. They visited the Me-
morial Nursing Home, served in Bill
Boyd's Over 75 Birthday Party, and pro-
vided money for the Hurricane Hugo
Relief fund. Under their new advisor,
Virginia Phillips, the club raised $250
by sponsoring the Goofy Goblin contest,
for the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes.
At the state convention, the club re-
ceived an award for this project. Robbie
Romeiser received the Lt. Governor of
the Year award for his outstanding work.
They ended the year by taking two six
mile walks for the March of Dimes
Walk-America and the Juvenile Diabe-
tes Foundation Walk-A-Thon.

Helping Hands
Starting off fresh with a new advisor,
Bitsy Phillips, the Civinettes had an
outstanding year in the service of their
community. One of the most rewarding
and beneficial activities the girls par-
ticipated in was The Bill Boyd Over 75
Birthday Party. When the guests arrived,
the Civinettes pinned corsages on them.
The girls handed out ice cream and cake
and danced with some of the guests.
They all had a great time.
The Civinettes also adopted a nursing
home this year. They enjoyed going to
the nursing home on special occasions.
They provided entertainment by playing
volleyball and bingo with the residents.

Hot Off The Presses!
The Patri-Article is one of three pres-
tigious publications at Southwest High
School. Advising the school newspaper
is a tough job which is capably handled
by Sue Kalbfleisch.Two workshops
are held to teach staff members skills
necessary for newswriting. Following
the workshop, there is an awards lunch-
eon, sponsored by Georgia School Pub-
lications Association. The newspapers
are judged on layout and copy writing,
then awards were presented. This chal-
lenging event took place at the Uni-

was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
To raise money for their spring concert
tour they had a gift wrap booth at Westgate
Mall during the Christmas season. At the
GMEA 1Ith District Festival their perfor-

had the privilege of performing at Opryland
in Nashville, Tennessee.
Also under the direction of Mrs. Kimber-
ly are the Show Choir and the Girls Choir.
These groups also participated in many
concerts. They won numerous awards with
their outstanding performances.
The three choirs participated in the
Spring Concert, which was held at the

BAND
Long Workouts Result in Super Year!
The talented members of the South-
west Marching Band began their year in
early August under the scorching Macon
sun. They spent at least four hours a day
learning new formations and routines in
order to entertain the football crowds
who eagerly awaited the exciting half-
time performances. The spectacular
dance routines led by Drum Majors
Warren Cray, Jeniel Cooper,and Ca-
landra Barber performed by the band
at half-time, are but a part of the tra-
dition established by the Marching Pa-
triots. These sweaty workouts and long
hours in the summer heat paid off tre-
mendously as the Marching Patriots
completed another super year.
This year the band rated first in their
appearance, as well as in their
performace, as they took the field with
their new bright red and white capes and
shoe spats. The band, with the help of
their energetic and devoted Band Par-
ents Club, sold Southwest seat cushions
and fruit to help purchase these new
accessories.
Nothing was capable of stopping the
Marching Patriots on the field or in the
local community. The members of the
band collected over three-hundred cans
of food in their annual can drive for the
needy at Thanksgiving. The Southwest
Marching Band marched into the hearts
of those at Southwest High and the
community around them. So as you see,
the best is at Southwest.

Band 163
The pulsating beats of the bass drum,
the blaring sound of the instruments, the
lift and step movements of each mem-
ber in the band, along with the roaring
and screaming of fans, make the South-
west Marching Band unbeatable. Under
the direction of their illustrious director
Oscar Jackson,the Marching Patriots
shook the field with lively perfor-
mances, that left the crowd standing in
amazement.
Many long hours and much hard work
ae
SOUTHWEST
went into the creating of this outstand-
ing group of performers. In after school
sessions, band members mastered rou-
tines, learned new songs, and offered
constructive criticism to one another.
This constant practice and interaction
created a pride that was evident to each
person who observed a half-time per-
formance at a Southwest football game
by this energetic group.
The Marching Patriots carried this
same energetic action from the football

field to parades such as the Vererans
Day Parade and the Cherry Blossom
Parade in Macon, and the Rose Parade
Parade in Thomasville, Georgia. They
continued their display of excellence by
receiving an excellent rating for their
performance at the Region Festival.
Their highstepping style, class and
brilliant movements are just a few rea-
sons why the Southwest Band can be
classified as untouchable.

The Southwest Patriots gathered
once again to mourn the passing of their

screamed and shouted to the beat of the

Homecoming
It was the night everyone had been
looking forward to. The crowd was anx-
ious to meet their new homecoming
king and queen.
As the band serenaded with Spend
the Night, the glamoruos couples glid-
ed across the football field. Anticipation
filled the air. The friends of the con-
testants nervously kept their fingers
crossed as the announcer named Skyla
Talton and Joe Dupree as queen and
king. The anticipation in the air was
then taken over by excitement. The wild
crowd stomped and yelled in the mid-

left the field in a smile.

Dance
October 28th was the night of the
annual Southwest Homecoming
Dance. The defeat of Southeast (49-0)
filled the students with excitement. The
gym was packed full of teens ready to
congratulate and crown their new home-
coming court king and queen.
The dance itself, was a hit! Everyone
was dancing, mingling, and having a
good time. Although it was hot, the heat
didn't seem to affect anyone. In fact, the
heat may have caused even more people
to get up from their seats and join the
fun!
Some say the dance was jammin',
jumping, or even pumping. Others
say it was cool, happening, and
hittin. No matter which way you say
it, the Homecoming Dance was a
SMASH!

Cook-Out!
On Thursday May 24th, the South-
west Pep Club sponsored a banquet for
all sports players, cheerleaders, and Pep
Club members at Lake Tobosofkee.
After everyone stuffed themselves
with hamburgers, hot dogs, fish, and
other goodies it was declared time
for the games to begin." Sandy" foot-
ball games kicked the cook-out off. Stu-
dents ran and chased after each other in
pursuit of who would become the next
victim to be dunked.
When the water events were over, the
dancing began. As music from car and
truck radios sounded, students phys-
ically expressed themselves. Everyone
was dancing and laughing and having a
great time!
Afterwards, the awards, medals, and
trophies were given out. As the students
resumed their dancing, it was an-
nounced that the party was over and
that it was time to go home. Sadly, the
students packed up their awards and
wet, sandy clothes, and headed for the
nearest bus. For those of you who didn't
have the opportunity to get dunked,
there's always next year!

Hold On To
The
Night
This year the Juniors did a great job in
getting ready for the Prom. The hard
work began on May 19, 1990 PROM
DAY! They started their day off at eight
that morning and worked until the set-
ting was perfect. So perfect that the
Seniors would never forget this most
memorable night.
Dazzling couples walked into the Ma-
con City Auditorium hand-in-hand
awaiting the excitement and fun that the
night was expected to bring. With the
music being played by the band
Princess and Stardust, the students
danced across the floor as if it was a
moonlit beach.
As the night drew on, the crowd ea-
gerly awaited the announcement of the
King and Queen of the Prom. Once the
lead out was completed, Ms. Cynthia
Warren Ross came out with the special
announcement. Erica Jaskula and
Chris Spivey were presented as the
King and Queen of the Southwest Prom.

Hail To The
Class of 1990!
The Class of 1990 kicked the end of
their Senior year off with a Reverse
Beauty Pageant made up of males and
females. The reversing of roles in the
contest gave the students a chance to
display such characteristics as person-
ality, appearance, and talent. Between
Eric Duggan and Charlie Simmons
the contest was pretty exciting. This
unique contest proved to be a humorous
and eye-catching assembly.
The next activity the seniors enjoyed
was the Senior Breakfast. Each senior
nad two sausage biscuits and Coke. Af-
terwards they practiced the Senior song
Friends. This made many students
finally realize that school was coming to
an end.
The students wore their caps and
gowns on Senior Honors Day for the first
time. Following Honors Day the seniors
had a luncheon in the Willingham B
Lunchroom. They received placemats
with their names on them as souvenirs.
Later a skit was put on by the Southwest
Student Council members and a Lip
Sync contest was held. Various con-
testants showed their talents through
singing and dancing. Senior Week was
finally coming to an end. The Grand
Finale was the Senior Dance. It was held
in the Macon Coliseums Monument
Room. The music was provided by
Bob's Mobile Sound. The dance
lasted from 8 till 12 with many of the
Seniors shouting for more. At the end
they all decided to end their Senior
Week with a famous chant known to the
halls of Southwest. HAIL TO THE

nual Underclassmen's Awards program
felt as if they had received their own
oscar. Awards were presented to stu-
dents who had been a part of each
schools publication, who had shown
leadership ability, and those who had
participated in Math competitions, Lit-
erary events, Academic meets, and De-
bate and Science competition. Certifi-
cates of Merit from the University of
Georgia were given to each junior who
had remained in the top five percent of
their class.
Students with the brains of Einstein
were presented a Mu Alpha Theta
Award, those with the poetic mind of
Thoreau received a literary award, and
those with the talent of Micheal Angelo
were presented an art award.
Nobody likes to come to school,
but that statement can be proven false,
because many underclassmen were rec-
ognized for their perfect attendance
which ranged from one to eleven years!
The Honor Roll awards were present-
ed to those students who had main-
tained a grade-point average of 3.6
throughout the academic year. Tension
really mounted as the names were called
from the Principal's List, composed of
students who have maintained an av-
erage of 4.0 or better.
To end the program the Junior Class
President, Joel Stenson, made a spe-
cial presentation to Mr. Stuart who
was leaving Southwest to serve as the
Principal of the Alternative School.

May 25th 1990, was a day that shall
be cherished by the class of 1990 for a
lifetime. The trip to the Grand Opera
House, by bus, was the first step toward
full tuitions being paid, the Star Student
having his last stroll, and the Senior
Class to make their presentation to the
school.
Recognition ranged from Scholar-
ships and Special Achievements to the
Most Improved Honors Math Student.
Smiles were washed away from their
faces as the pianist began to play the
chord for their senior song. They knew
that with this note it was time to start
packing up the dreams that had been
planted and begin another chapter of
their lives. Senioritis or not, the class of
1990 maintained pride for their school,
academic standings, and their motto of
being High and Mighty.

The Final
Outcome!
For eleven years the 1990 seniors
have been eagerly awaiting the day that
they could walk across the stage and
accept their diploma. That day finally
came on June 8, 1990. The ceremony
began at 8:15 p.m., which seemed like a
lifetime for the seniors since they had to
arrive forty-five minutes early. The halls
were filled with laughter, joy, excite-
ment, and sadness.
The seniors waited for the time they
could hear the processional music to
enter. Once inside, their stomachs were
filled with butterflies, mainly because
they wondered whether or not they
would trip and fall while going across the
stage. Then the announcer called their
names happy and proud of them-
selves, they accepted their diplomas
and became Ready For the Future.

We Did It
Our Way!
The work for the Spirit of '90 year-
book started weeks before school was
scheduled to begin. During the summer
Senior pictures was the first job on the
agenda. Once they were completed
some of the staff along with Ms. Fu-
gate and Ms. Phillips went to the Tay-
lor Yearbook Workshop at Ga. Tech. It
was on this campus that our yearbook
was born. The theme had been chosen
and the opening layouts had been drawn
to perfection. Now it was time to see
what the Taylor Representatives
thought of our book. On Awards day we
were awarded the Sweepstakes Award,
which is the highest award in our
schools size division. We were very
proud of ourselves for achieving this
goal. Once school began the staff had
lots to learn and little time to learn it. We
divided into two groups with one fo-
cusing on copy and the other on layouts.
This proved to be good because it gave
us a little more time to work on the BIG
ONE. Our first deadline was hectic.
Layouts, paper, and pencils were every-
where but we managed to make to the
end. It was hard work but somebody had
to do it.

228 Annual Staff
THANK YOU!
Another year has come and gone and
with it another yearbook has been com-
pleted. The Spirit of 90, like previous
books, took many long hours of ded-
icated work by the entire staff. The main
cog" in the wheel of production was
the editor, Tom Williams. He put in
long hours to make sure the Spirit of 90
was an outstanding book. We were con-
stantly hollering Tom-Tom, where is
the copy for this layout? we have a
deadline next week!" He never com-
plained and went about his work with a
smile on his face. Thanks to his work
and determination the Southwest year-
book was once again selected as a na-
tional show book by Taylor Publishing
Company. He will always have a special
place in our hearts We LOVE you
Tom-Tom.
There were many other cogs in the
wheel that helped produce this out-

A Special
Thanks
From the Editor
When | was approached with the idea
of being Editor of The Spirit of 90 year-
book | was flabbergasted. | wondered
whether | could hold up to the past
quality of all the past yearbooks, would
the staff like me, and most of all would
the yearbook be the best ever.
As time passed | felt that the staff
would get used to me because | couldn't
tell them what to do without laughing
about it first. | believed in them and
when deadlines came around and the
work got piled up with all the stress and
confusion they were there to back me
up.
As the year came to a close | finally
knew that | could make this book the
best. With all the help and support from
my parents and all the bragging that my
grandmother did, | knew that they all
believed in me also (Thanks Mom, Dad,
and Grandmother). Most of all THANK
YOU Ms. Phillips and Ms. Fugate for
putting up with me, first as your Busi-
ness Manager, and then as your Editor.
I'll never forget you for all your help. |
also thank God for giving me the
strength to stick on until the end and
Larry Naylor for being more than the
best photographer in the world. God
bless our most dearest friend. We'll miss
you Larry! Last but not least | must
thank Cherie Smith for caring and
teaching me how to forgive and forget
as you can. | also thank you for your
ruthless attitude. And | mean that in a
sensitive way because your attitude is
one that | would love to have. Thanks
Cherie!
This yearbook is sincerly the best
ever and | enjoyed every minute of it. It
was an experience that | will always
cherish and hold dear to my heart. |
know now that | am definitely READY
FOR THE FUTURE!!

In Memory of Larry Naylor
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old Age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
Dylan Thomas
It has been said by many poets that only the good die
young." When we think of Mr. Larry, we know that is a
truth. Larry Naylor was a photographer with Southeastern
Portraits. For many years he came to Southwest, taking
Senior pictures, Senior focals, Superlatives, Homecoming,
Sports, everything for the yearbook. No picture was too
difficult. Mr. Larry climbed rickety old ladders, went up in
cherry-pickers or fire truck buckets for us in order to get
the perfect shot

But he was more than just our photographer. He was our
dear friend. He helped us with difficult layouts and laughed
with us as we worked on the Spirit. We would see Larry
coming with camera bags on each shoulder, his old, thick
coffee mug in his hand, a smile on his face, and we knew
we'd get the job done. He always left us with a smile and,
Drive Careful.
We lost our friend to cancer on May 13,1990. Those of us
who knew and loved Mr. Larry' have set up a Memorial
Scholarship to be given each year to a Senior Annual Staff
member. The names will be added each year to a plaque in
Larry's honor.
It is with love that the Advisors and Staff of Spirit of 90
dedicate the yearbook in the memory of Larry Naylor.
Drive Careful, Mr. Larry!
