MAKE YOUR MARK

@ OUR TRADITIONAL MARKS

It is traditional that our faculty includes more
in the educational day than just academics. We
learn trust, honesty, and discipline by examples
of good leaders

We are fortunate to have many clubs filled
with hard working members participating in ser
vice and community projects

Our students strive for excellence in all
fields. The Bulldog is well dressed with the
latest fads, and right on target with the latest
sounds

Yet we are bound by traditions established
by former classes to uphold the Bulldog name
in all our endeavors

50 YEARS OF COACHING @

Jimmy Maffett and Carl Peaster
represent the very best in coaching
for many years in Macon County.
These men retired from their
coaching positions at the end of the
1984-85 season, and have left
highlights in football and basketball
history for our school.

Coach Maffett received Coach of
the Year in Middle Georgia, Region
Coach three times, three
Distinguished Coaching Awards, and
three Congressional Certificates of
Merit.

Coach Peaster was Coach of the
Year six times, an All Star Coach,
and won over 80% of games
coached

Both men claim dedication and
discipline as the only course to
becoming a winner. Standards set by
their athletic programs over the
years have given many young men
and women the opportunity to grow
and meet new challenges, not only
on the court, but from within. These
fine men have felt their daily
example to the student was as
important as their coaching
strategies. Respect for the individual,
as well as a firm belief in building
team work, have lead to many
winning seasons for the Bulldogs and
past players.

THANKS, COACH, WE LOVE
YOU.

TIMES MARKED

IN OUR HERITAGE -~

Macon County is just
flowing with history and
tradition. The Flint River
provides fun and recreation, as
well as industry. Also from all
around, people come to have
the experience of riding
Georgias last ferry.

Part of our heritage includes
the Montezuma City Library
built in 1906 by $10,000 grant
from the Carnegie Fund. It has
provided recreational reading
and information for
generations.

Because of the excellent
agricultural opportunities,
members of the Mennonite
sect chose Macon County for
settlement, and we are proud
to have them for our

merseed noe |S y q neighbors.
aaa a ; : \ 4 HA EF - The railroad tracks are
ote reminders of the ever present
trains running through
downtown, especially when
youre late.

Our memories of MCHS will
always hold a part in our
pride. As Bulldogs we are
proud of our heritage in
America. We move now to
make our own marks.

We have an opportunity to learn many
vocational skills relating to future employment and
to participate in classes of drama, music, and
creative writing for personal growth

In sports, our Girls Basketball Team met the
challenge of a new coach and young players with
enthusiasm and long hours of practice

Moving our library and making necessary
building repairs didnt slow our classwork down. It
only encouraged us to use outside sources for
information, and to be creative in keeping out of
the workmens way

We have each other, our faculty, our Principal,
our drive, and determination. We are ready for
the challenge

MCHS prides itself on
achievement. In order to
achieve goals students are
encouraged to participate in
our various extracurricular
clubs and activities. One of
the highest honors is to be
invited to join the newly
combined honor club,
consisting of the National
Honor Society and the Sam
Jones Honor Society, which
is based on the students
grade-point average. A
second newly formed club is
the Key Club. Another
honor shared by many is to
be a member of one of the
many different sport teams
Students are also
encouraged to participate in
literary events, such as the
Debate team and the one-
act play, so that they can
earn recognition for MCHS

Star Student

The Star Student Award, given annually by the

Georgia Chamber of Commerce is awarded to the senior

scoring person must also be in the top ten percent of
the graduating class. Cams records included not only
high academic standards, but an interest in the whole
school program. This young woman plans to attend
Georgia Tech and major in engineering. Cam chose Mrs
Mary Ann Jones as her star teacher, because of the
great influence she has had on her education and
dedication she feels for the job

Mrs. Mary Ann Jones, a MCHS alumni, has been
teaching eleven years. She has received degrees from
GA. Southwestern including a BS in Education with
majors in physics and mathematics, and a MS in
Education with a major in mathematics. In 1979, she
participated in a DOE Energy Workshop at North
Georgia College, and in 1985 attended a Workshop for
Math Teachers at GA Southwestern. She has been
statistician for the basketball teams, cheerleader sponsor,
and is currently advisor for the National Honor Society.
Her teaching schedule includes Algebra II, Geometry,
and Physical Science. Being chosen by Cam is a real
thrill. As a teacher, it is very rewarding to know you
have influenced someone to that degree.

THE MARK OF A COMET

-
Fd

Halleys comet and the countless others that blaze across the midnight skies have had a profound effect on
history. They have influenced literature, art, religion, and warfare. For years, comets have been thought to be
bearers of deaths, pestilinces wars, droughts, earthquakes, and floods. The Chinese who recorded the appearances
of comets as early as 613 B.C., thought that the comets were celestial brooms wielded by gods to sweep the
heavens free of evil. Aristotle, a Greek philsopher thought the comets were earthly exhalations that rose into the
atmosphere and were ignited in fiery upperwinds, causing drought and high winds. In A.D. 66, Halleys comet was
believed to be indicative of the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. In 451, it was thought to fortell Attila the Huns
defeat. Superstition about comets has persisted into the 20th Century. As Halleys came into view in 1910, some
residents of Chicago prepared themselves for death by Cyanogen-gas poisioning when as it was widely predicted,
the earth passed the comet's tail. As recently as 1970 Vietnamese peasants quaked at the sight of the sky
broom, the unexpectidly vivid passage of Bennetts Comet. As the comet approaches, one can only hope that it
doesnt signify great disaster. For many of us, it will be a once in a lifetime spectacle. It is thought by the Seniors
of 86 to be an indication of the great success that shall befall this class.

o_ NEWSPAPER

This year the seniors have
rejuvenated something that has
made its mark on MCHS in past
years a school newspaper. Under
the direction of Rebecca Logue,
Editor and starter of this project,
the very first issue was a success.
The paper includes such features as
entertainment, sports, health, current
events, and student contributions.
With senior leadership we would like
this paper to continue to make its
mark on MCHS.

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 by the
National Association of Secondary School Principals as a
means of encouraging academic excellence in schools. The
Thronateeska chapter of National Honor Society at Macon
County High School was chartered in 1962. At that time
only Juniors and Seniors could be members of the National
Honor Society. To bring Freshmen and Sophomores into
an honor club the Junior Honor Society was formed by and
later named after the principal at that time, Sam Jones. In . VERTICAL
1982, the National Honor Society changed the by-laws so
that Senior honor societies were in Senior High schools and
junior honor societies were in Junior High schools. When
this happened it became necessary and desirable for Na-
tional Honor Society and Sam Jones Honor Society to
merge.

In the spring of 1985, the two clubs voted to merge.
Leading this year are the following officers from each club.

The National Honor Society is very sincere about its endeavors to be a
successful organization, however, members enjoy themselves between club
meetings with antics and jokes. This time is enjoyed by all, because after
school work, homework, and outside work, a little fun and laughter is
helpful to keep clubs, school, and community tied together for success.

Through the years, MCHS has had many good cheerleading squads, but the
1985-86 cheerleaders were definitely the best. This was proven many times,
especially at summer camp. After a long summer of jogging, weight lifting, and
practicing cheers three days a week, every week, the squad attended camp at
the University of Georgia, accompanied by Mr. Howard Frontz. They won three
Superior ribbons, one Excellent ribbon, and the coveted Spirit Stick.

Not only was camp a success, but also the school year itself. The cheerleaders
worked hard all year to support their teams, with weekly posters, spirit tags, and
occasionally special refreshments. They were beside the teams in both victory
and defeat, with bright smiles and words of congratulations or comfort.

The cheerleaders had an unusual
problem this year there was no
sponsor. However, due to much help
and support from Coach Peaster, Mr.
Frontz, Mrs. Lyons, Mrs. Robinson,
and the understanding faculty and stu-
dent body at MCHS, the 1985-86
cheerleading squad was superb and
will be long remembered.

The Macon County Bulldog
Band has been busy. Under the
direction of Howard Frontz they
were involved in various
activities at school and in the
community. They marched in the
Montezuma Christmas Parade,
participated in the Montezuma
Deer Day Festival. They were
also involved in the District
Honor Band, District Solo and

MAJORETTES: Jana McKinney, Debee Hall, Teresa Woodruff, Pansy Peaster

Our majorettes have style. These Band
members are necessary to the overall success on
the field for performance and appearance.
However, it takes more than practice to have a
good squad. They worked during the summer in a
community camp for children to learn the basic
fundamentals, and earned funds for new uniforms.
Throughout the season, these members remained
dedicated to various tasks, and made our Band the
best.

VARSITY
FOOTBALL

The 85-86 Bulldog football team came
under new management this season with
optimistic views on the upcoming season.
With only a few regular starters and a
long line of underclass players returning,
the team worked very hard during the
summer to prepare the inexperienced
team. Small size and breaks during the
season led the players to a record of 1-9
on the season. Yet and still, the team
never gave up and fought valiantly to the
end of every game. Furthermore, all was
not at loss this year because underclass
players brighten the future for Macon
County football with outstanding
performances on several occasions. With
more hard work and excellent coaching,
the Bulldogs are going to be out to make
their mark next year

many fine seasons of football at Macon
County High. In addition to his high school
coaching, he also teaches math at MCJH

mainly on basic fundamentals which are essential in
every winning programs

We look forward to many future seasons of

Almost never getting a moments rest, the statisticians chart
all the important statistics during the football games. In addi-
tion to keeping up with our players stats, they also recorded
the opponents stats. This years statisticians also served as the
managers for the football team. carried and supervised the
upkeep of the equipment.

The precision of the colorful flags adds much to the
overall Bands appearance, and is appreciated by the
Bulldog fans. These hardworking ladies attended a
summer camp to improve their performance, and
helped raise funds to have new uniforms made for the
season.

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL

This years Basketball team made
some definite changes. Losing six sen-
iors and a coach, it was practically like
starting over. Under the guidance of a
new coach, Mr. Joseph Lee, the girls
hope to go far. His starting line up Coach Joe Lee
consists of 5 young girls who will be
returning next year. Starting fresh, the
team intends to make its mark on

BOYS VARSITY
BASKETBALL

The 85-86 boys varsity basketball team are
looking forward to one of the best seasons they
have had in the past years. The Dogs have 8
returning players with a lot of experience along
with a very large front line that makes them the
team to beat in Region 1AA. Coach Tungate
has drilled the team hard so that they will play
up to their new found potential. With a lot of
determination and practice, this will become a
winning team as the boys come back to make

their Mark!!

BASEBALL

The 86 bulldog baseball team is looking forward to
one of its better seasons this year. The team is under
the supervision of new head coach, Mike Hunter. Coach
Hunter plans to work on the fundamentals to complete
the foundation laid by last years coaching and team.
The team has several returning players with experience,
and big things are expected from them. Also, the team
has a strong pitching staff that should aid a good
defense. With some breaks and a good offensive team,
the 86 Bulldog Baseball Team should make their mark
in Region I-AA.

been working very hard to
prepare its 9th graders for the
Varsity Football team. They
practiced very long hours to gain

help them in their future years on

appreciation should be given to
their coaches and their family for
the support given to them
throughout the season.

A NEW LIBRARY

Following a three month delay in
the completion of our new wing,
the shifting of the books finally
began as Mrs. Ethridge, Mrs.
Harvey, and numerous students
began the tedious task of setting
up our new library media center.
Much library material, which had
been stored in huge boxes since
the end of the 84-85 school term,
had to be cleaned and aired
before the items could be
shelved. Other books and audio-
visual materials which had gotten
wet had to be discarded.

After three weeks of unpacking,
cleaning, rearranging, and hanging
new location signs, the media
center opened to students and
faculty on November 12, 1984.

The goal of the 86 Bulldog is to
make an everlasting mark on the
hearts of all who view it. I especially
hope a place for this annual will
always remain in the heart of the
Class of 86. Long after the pages
of the book has been worn from
years of reminiscing (by former
classmates and teachers). | would
like to know that the 86 Bulldog
Made its Mark!!

As past editors have said, writing
the editors note is the hardest task s
the editor faces in putting a P|
yearbook together. Hours of hard

a

work were exerted by a most

helpful staff in making the book.

Along with the staff, Mrs. Jo

Campbell, the advisor, and Mrs.

Carole Barfield, the staff
