SPIRIT
WEEK |
1984
Student Council did an excellent job planning the 1984 spirit
week. The week started October 16, with Hawaiian or Tacky
Tourist day. There was a luau at both lunches, and punch was
served while the band played. On Wednesday, the JCHS campus
was covered with punk rockers, and people dressed as their op-
posite sex. At lunch the JCHS Greyhound chased the Dodge Co.
Indian and, when caught, the Indian was locked up for the night.
Thursday was Hunter or Mourning day. Students came dressed as
hunters or in funeral clothes to mourn the hanging of the Dodge In-
dian. At lunch the Indian was hanged and buried in the
schoolyard.
Friday was the traditional purple and goid day. The afternoon
was filled with excitement, as there was a pep rally followed by a
city wide parade.
The 1984 Spirit Week was truly one of the best ever!!
JCHS
TALENT
SHOW
The Talent Show presented a new format this year.
Contestants were divided into four categories of com-
petition. These categories included dance, vocal, in-
strumental and a miscellaneous category. This year's
winners were the Happy Feet Cloggers in the dance
category, Tarshena Shuler in the instrumental category,
Wendy Williams and Rodney Lester in the vocal
category, and Sherry Webb, Shannon Webb, and
DeAnn Bivins in the miscellaneous category. The overall
prize was given to Wendy Williams and Rodney Lester.
A standing room only crowd was presented a magnifi-
cent show.
WHITE CHRISTMAS
The White Christmas program in 1984 was
somewhat different from past White Christmas pro-
grams. It was centered around favorite Christmas
stories and featured several skits and Christmas
carols. The Senior Class of 1985 did a great job!

In Memory
THERE IS NO DEATH There is no death! Although we grieve
When beautiful, familiar forms
That we have learned to love are torn
From our embracing arms
There is no death! The stars go down
To rise upon some other shore,
And bright in heavens jewelled crown
Huey shine torevennore. Although with bowed and breaking heart,
With sable garb and silent tread,
We bear their senseless dust to rest,
And say that they are dead,
There is no death! The forest leaves
Convert to life the viewless air;
The rocks disorganize to feed
The hungry moss they bear. They are not dead! They have but passed
Beyond the mists that blind us here
Into the new and larger life
Of that serener sphere.
They have but dropped. theimrobe of clay
To put their shining raiment on;
They have not wandered far away
They are not lost nor gone.
There is no death! The dust we tread
Shall change, beneath the summer showers
To golden grain, or mellowed fruit,
Or rainbow-tinted flowers.
There is no death! The leaves may fall,
And flowers may fade and pass away
They only wait, through wintry hours,
The warm, sweet breath of May. Though disenthralled and glorified
They still are here and love us yet;
The dear ones they have left behind
They never can forget.
There is no death! The choicest gifts
That heaven hath kindly lent to earth
Are ever first to seek again
The country of their birth. And sometimes, when our hearts grow faint
Amid temptations fierce and deep,
Or when the wildly raging waves
Of grief or Seamer se a eee
And all things that for growth or joy
Are worthy of our love or care,
Whose loss has left us desolate,
Are safely garnered there.
Though life become a desert waste,
We know its fairest, sweetest flowers,
Transplanted into Paradise, c er ey
Adorn immortal bowers.

Now mingles with the ang

The 1985 varsity basketball team dedicated
their season to Mr. Jimmy Myers for his loyal sup-
port to Athletics.
This years team lost four great players, but we also
gained five exceptional seniors. Dennis Woolfolk and
Reginald Grant proved to be outstanding outside
shooters and top scorers. The Hounds, led by Coach
Eddie Dudley and Coach Cecil Patterson achieved a
reputable record of 12-12.

This years team consisted of five varsity players and thirteen varsity pro-
spects. Their coach, Cecil Patterson, led them to a great season. Chris Gray
proved to be an exceptionally good point guard, and he and his other team
members are looking forward to next years season.
We Are The Champions
BASEBALL
Jones County enjoyed the best season ever last year in baseball. Coach Pattersons team produced another
Region 3AAA championship and another Lem Clarke Tournament championship. The team made it all the way
to the State Quarter Finals with a perfect 22-0 record before bowing out to a tough Troup County squad. Coach
Patterson was chosen by the Macon Telegraph & News as Middle Georgias Baseball Coach of the Year, and
Adrian Adkins was chosen as Middle Georgia's Spring Sports Player of the Year. In 1985, our team is expecting
to be right back on top again. Jones County will be led by two outstanding pitchers, Jamey Huckeba and Roger
Lee.

GOLF - HOLE IN ONE
Coach Bubba Williams
Four years have passed

these amateur golfers this
spring. The six best players

GIRLS TRACK
Coach Giddens took over the responsibility of
coaching Girls Track. Track involves more than just
meets. It takes weeks of practice to develop the
necessary skills to compete, in return for a few seconds
of competition. The girls put their hearts and bodies
into preparing for the region meet.

Optimistic is the word for the boys track team at
JCHS this year according to new Coach Edward
Mullins. The team has practiced mastering the skills
of passing batons, throwing discs and jumping
hurdles.
They had nine meets with other schools, and
competition proved to be very stiff. Congratulations,
Coach Mullins, your team has done a good job.
Coach Jim Abbott
Last years team had the best scoring season of
any of the past years. Both the boys and the girls
team had a terrific season, and this years team is
heading in the same direction. The team consists
of two seniors, Gayla Morgan and John Pittman,
six juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen.

If | Had Known
If |had known what trouble you were bearing;
What griefs were in the silence of your face;
| would have been more gentle, and more caring,
And tried to give you gladness for a space.
| would have brought more warmth into the place,
If |had known.
If | had Known what thoughts despairing drew you;
(Why do we never try to understand?)
| would have lent a little friendship to you,
And slipped my hand within your hand,
And made your stay more pleasant in the land.

Friendship
Friendship is a silver ring.
Friendship is a lovely thing.
Just begins and has no end.
Doesnt even need to send
Messages on paper white.
Knows that all is well and right.
Lives on thoughts and true affection.
Now and then has this objection:
Time is short and meetings few.
So this brings my love to you.

BEST PAPER, TO SET THE

THE BEST SCHOOL EVER.

HM UII LION Oa Be
At first glance, the yearbook is just a book with pictures of Jones County students. Some
people like the book and some dont. But before you judge the book, lets see the work
involved in producing a 232 page yearbook and raising the $16,000 to pay for it.
We began the 1985 Growl last year while still in school. For weeks we talked about a
theme and finally decided on oneIts a Matter of PRIDE. We worked during the summer
getting copy ready, deciding on what pictures to take, and finding the right lay-outs to use.
Sounds easy ?? Try staying up until 4:00 a.m. deciding on the right lay-out! Remember we
have to agree or at least most of us.
When school started we worked everyday until Feb. 21 when | turned in this last page.
The staff still had more copy to write on every section, lay-outs to draw, pictures to take. We
had to draw every single page. Toward the end of each dead-line we worked mornings, after
school, nights, and even over the weekends.
We put a lot more work in the yearbook than people imagine. We do our best to produce
a good book for the school, but some still complain. The staff cant please everyone, but we
still try to. We hope you do enjoy the book because we are proud of our accomplishment
and take PRIDE in it!
