The Salesian 1973

In the begin-
ning was the
Word; the Word
was in Gods
presence, and the
Word was God.
He was present
to God in the
beginning.

Through him all
things came into
being, and apart
from him noth-
ing came to be.
Whatever came
to be in him,
found life, life
for the light of
men. The light
shines on in
darkness, a dark-
ness that did not
overcome it.

New Dimensions in Edueation

Although aware of announcements being
made every morning and during the day
and of being called down for misbehaving,
many students dont realize the important
role the Administration plays in the school.
Vital decisions which insure smooth run-
ning of the school are constantly made con-
cerning finances, the new buildings, and
school policy. On the shoulders of the Ad-
ministration rests the responsibility to up-
hold the name of de Sales. Under their guid-
ance, the school year is more productive,
harmonious, and enjoyable.

Sister Patricia

Resolved to further the knowl-
edge of students at de Sales,
the faculty faithfully works
side by side with us, day after
day, patient with those who
cant quite understand; they
are always willing to listen
when students have problems.
The faculty is also interested
in extra-curricular activities,
and can be found at games
with spirit rivaling that of the
cheerleaders. Seldom fully ap-
preciated for their efforts, the
faculty nevertheless strives to
challenge us to new horizons.

Seniors

Drawn even closer in the
knowledge that this is their
last year together, the senior
class has found that it is not
too late to make new friends.
Rushing to get back to class
after taking off for lunch at
the Burger King, pumping out
the aquarium in Advanced Bi-
ology, or walking across the
tennis court, the seniors have
become a unified group in
their four years together. In
the hassle of choosing a col-
lege, applying, and agonizing
over the wait for a letter of ac-
ceptance, they are also
wrapped up in Dope Stop, art,
cheerleading, basketball, Press
Club, tennis, Hamlet, senior
privileges, graduation, bon-
fires, composition, and after
school jobs ... yet through
these activities the seniors are
enthusiastic.

COUNTDOWN 4-8-2

One good time after anotherthats how the life of a
Junior goes in his role as a leader. Soc-hops and turkey
raffles are only two of the many activities that have
been initiated under the guidance of the Juniors. How-
ever, a Juniors life is not all play. Preparation for SAT
tests, Chemistry, and American History consume
many hours of study time. The most valuable gift the
Juniors give to the school is their enthusiasm, support
for its functions and relentless drive. They are coming
toward the end of their journey to fulfillment.

On top of Old Smokey are Sammy, John, Mike & Maggie-Junior class officers.

SOPHOMORES

A fresh, excited energetic group. . . This really
describes the Sophomores. The new duties
thrust upon them are taken willingly and care-
fully carried out. A new world of wonder opens
before them. New subjects, Biology and its lifes
processes, Geometry and its theorems, and his-
tory of ancient nations inspire these potential
leaders. The challenge is accepted. The class of
"75 marches forward.

FRESHMENTHE BEGINNING OF

A new wonder, a new world, and a new wisdom. . . all
of these await the Freshmen as they try to get used to
a totally different environment. Shoved into maturity,
they must face the challenge thrust upon them with
fortitude. Learning a completely new language, sol-
ving equations for algebra, doing forward rolls in
P.E.all of these contribute to a well-rounded student.
They are now able to finish their years at Mt. de Sales
knowing that they have made a good beginning. They
have only begun their venture into a new tomorrow.

LETS MAKE A DEAL

The most important media at Mt. de
Sales is the Student Council. A clear chan-
nel of communication is opened between
faculty and students by the work of its
dedicated members. Led by four per-
severing officers who represent the opin-
ions of our student body, they try to am-
plify school spirit by raising to new
heights the pride that we have for our
school. The snow cone sale in the fall and
the Homecoming dance are only two of
the many activities sponsored by the Stu-
dent Council. The voice of the students
has been strengthened this year by the
Student Council.

Student Council officers are pres.D. McCunniff, vice-pres.D. Paulish, treas.J. Con-

THE GRADUATE

A lasting memoir of a memorable yearobviously
the creation of such a work is difficult. Able to do
the job is the staff of the 73 Salesian. These dedi-
cated members of our school strove to recreate the
year gone by through pictures and words. With
patience and care they took random pictures, and
by placing them strategically they reconstructed
most of the high lights of a great year. Giving up
many weekends, the crew worked untiringly and
even went all the way to Atlanta for a special job.
Many of the members sacrificed in order to be at
the best place at the best time for a key picture,
and the result is a beautiful yearbook filled with
love.

THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD

If you could read our minds. . .
Advisor Ann Warren, Mary Jane Dickey, Mark Cassidy, Betty Bickett, Lauren Drinnon, Toni English, and Tom Dombrowski

Layout page, assign, interview, write, re-write,
meet deadline, edit, type, send to printer, edit
copy, paste up page, return to printer, roll the
presses, whew! So goes the publication of an is-

sue in the life of the newspaper staff.

The Press Club is made up of students dedicated
to printing the news and getting the job done
right. Under the leadership of Miss Warren and
the editors, the staff is trained to write stories
properly according to newspaper policy, and to
help the editors with page lay-outs. Sometimes
discouraged by a cancelled or re-written story,
the reporters nevertheless keep those stories
coming in and another issue is born.

Whoops! says Newspaper Staff Advisor, Ann Warren.

CAMPAIGN 72: Eight seconds left to
the half-time and nervousness sweeps
across the Homecoming platform. Feet
begin to shift uneasily and ties are ad-
justed, blouses straightened and a
stray lock of hair tucked into place.
Now it is time to form the line and the
butterflies are moving faster. Oh, no!
All those people! Now they are calling
out the names! Well, here goes! What if
the mud should splash on us? What if
the corsage falls off? Smile big. They
are introducing Debbie and Steve.

A very important outlet of our school spirit is
cheerleading. The girls who so unselfishly give
of their time and energy in order to lift the spir-
its of our athletes and to raise to a peak the en-
thusiasm of the student body. They lead us to
spirited outbursts of athletic zeal and work to
keep a running current of interest in all of our
teams. The attractive bulletin board in the
cafeteria always shows the current foe of the
Cavaliers, thanks to these talented girls. The
cheerleadersthe voice of spirit!

A truly dedicated group of
men, the football coaches work
long hours to build our team,
sacrificing weekends, and con-
scious always that they must
set the pace for the team. It is
the coaches who spur the boys
on to victory and rally them
forward from the disappoint-
ment of defeat.

Beginning weeks before school
starts, the coaches spend long
hours of practice in the hot sun
patiently instructing, agoniz-
ing over decisions, and booting
sagging morales.

However, their job is not re-
stricted to the players alone.
They are also responsible for
igniting the spark of enthusi-
asm in the students, knowing
the value of student support at
games. Often taking a back
seat to players in the con-
gratulations after victories,
the coaches are to be thanked
for a fine season.

Still a young team, the lady
Cavaliers, led by that all-
around good guy Coach Mike
Garvin, have seen a difficult
season, high lighted by several
victories. The happiness and
enthusiasm of the girls over
well-earned victories illus-
trates what happens when the
following ingredients are
mixed:

Coach Garvin; the girls play-
ing; conscientious practice;
support from the bench; ex-
cited fans; cheerleaders; un-
derstanding parents; and last,
but not least, Jane Conner

The experience gained by the
girls this season will prove in-
valuable to them in coming
seasons. The girls have
emerged from the season a

THE CLASS OF 73 IS DISMISSED!

DEAR GRADUATES:

We hope your years at Mount De Sales have fueled your inner fires of knowledge and human warmth
enough to enjoy your adult life.

Henry Ford and his associates did more to contribute to the economical and thus social welfare of Michi-
gan than all of the Michigan state legislators, Michigan Governors, U.S. Representatives, U. S. Senators,
and American Presidents combined (and usually despite them).

You with the help of your parents, friends, and your teachers are usually able to do more for yourself and
those you love than the entire remainder of the universe and do it better!

Coming and going;
Walking and
running; sharing
ideas and feelings;
Experiencing so
much in such a
short while; we
cannot stay
forever yet we
have grown from
our stay; its

time to move on,
to expand
ourselves and
conquer our goals;
We have given;
We have taken;

A part of our life
is over. WE PASS
THIS WAY BUT
ONCE.

Mrs. Debbie Balmes
