- Description:
- On Rocky Creek, a few miles from Augusta, is the place where, in 1796, Eli Whitney erected and put into operation the first cotton gin. At that time but a small quantity of cotton was grown, and all of it had to be seeded by hand, a very slow process, so that the invention of the gin was a wonderful boom to the cotton industry. The club house of the Eli Whitney Country Club is now erected on the site.
