- Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island, 17 miles from Savannah, was named in honor of Count Casimir Pulaski, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Savannah in 1779. The fort, surrounded by a wide moat, is 1580 feet in circumference. The 7 to 11 feet thick solid brick walls are designed to mount two tiers of guns. The fort, stronghold of bygone days, is open to visitors.
