- Description:
- Monition of John Madrazo, owner of the Spanish ship "Isabelita," recorded in the United States District of Georgia Court of Admiralty subsequent to his filing a libel for restitution for the loss of his African slaves.
In October 1817 ninety-five African slaves were allegedly taken by privateers from the Portuguese ship "Jesu Nasareno," owned by Miguel de Castro. The Africans, originally bound for Havana, Cuba, were taken to Amelia Island off the coast of East Florida, sold to William Bowen, an agent for a Savannah merchant, and subsequently transported through Georgia to the Creek Indian territory. The ensuing case involved violations of the Non Importation Act of Congress (1807) in which the importation of slaves into the United States was outlawed. - Metadata URL:
