- Juliette (Gordon) Low founded the Girl Scouts of the United States of America in 1912.
Correspondents include Juliette Gordon Low, W.W. Gordon II, Nelly Kinzie Gordon, Mabel Gordon Leigh, Eleanor Gordon Parker, (George) Arthur Gordon, Sir George Lewis. All of the letters except one from Sir George Lewis, are from Juliette G. Low to her relatives. The letters of January and February 1910 are written from en route to Ottawa and New York City from aboard the SS. Celtic sailing to Egypt, and from Egypt. The letters from Canada talk about her friends, parties, and her planned Egyptian trip. One of the letters from en route to Egypt talks about visiting the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The letters written from Egypt describe sights and talk about parties and friends, principally George Hunter, brother of Sir Archibald Hunter. Letters of April 7 and 12 are from France, and mention sights, sculpture courses, and Rudyard Kipling. The letters from the end of April are mailed from Paris and talk about art lessons, Aunt Eliza and Gulie Stiles, and the coming coronation of George V. The letters of May and June are written from England and talk about relatives, friends, the coronation, and various entertainments. In a letter of June 29, 1911 to her father, Juliette mentions meeting Robert Baden-Powell, and in another letter, written about the same time to her mother, she talks at length about Robert Baden-Powell and the Boy Scouts. - External Identifiers:
