OBITUARY
Mother in gladness, Mother in sorrow,
Mother today. Mother tomorrow.
With arms ever open to enfold and caress you.
Oh Mother of mine, may God keep and bless you.
Mrs. Maggie Foreman Bailey, the daughter of the late
Rev. Dempesy P. and Rosa Foreman, was born Dec. 31,1895
in Flampton, S. C. She departed this life Thursday morning,
Nov. 3, 1977 at 11:30, at the Evans Memorial Flospital.
At an early age the family moved to this area. At 15
years of age she joined the St. John Missionary Baptist
Church. Until recent years she was an ardent worker in many
departments of the church. She served as president of the
Ladies Aid Club for 52 years; she was a music director;
Sunday School teacher; BTU Director; Youth Director and
Mission President.
Other religious organizations in which she was active
and held offices were the Tattnall Missionary Baptist
Association; District, State and National Baptist
Conventions.
On April 17, 1912, she was joined in holy matrimony to
the late Dea. Charlie Bailey. To this union four children were
born, one of which preceded her in death.
As a community worker her interest extended to civic
and fraternal organizations having been a member of the
NAACP, the WMBS Society and the Burial Society. She was
a former member of the Eastern Star and was noted for her
volunteer and humanitarian endeavors.
She received her Degree in Education from Tuskegee
Institute, Tuskegee, Ala. She taught in the school systems of
Tattnall and Evans Counties for 55 years. She was recognized
as Evans County Teacher of the Year 1955-56. She served
as president of the Evans County High School P.T.A. for 10
years, she received the Certificate of Merit Georgia
Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, and the
Certificate of Merit State Department of Education, as she
retired June 5, 1962.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mae Frances Bailey:
two sons, Charles L. Bailey and Johnny L. Bailey, all of
Claxton, Ga.; one brother, Holbrook Foreman of Lake Wales,
Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Earlean G. Bailey; one
sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Foreman; three grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
She served and loved her Master
And tried His will to do;
Was always helping others
A life so noble, kind and true.
