A husband and fathers life of love, caring, and devotion
came to a close on Saturday night, March 11,2006 at 11:50P.M.
at Claxton Nursing Home when Mr. William Henry Hagan. Sr., age 82
of Claxton, Georgia, answered the Masters call and left silently with
an angel of God to live in that land not built with hands, but whose
maker and builder is God.
Son of the late Mr. Peter Hagan and the late Mrs. Maggie
Bacon Hagan, he was born on October 21,1923 in Evans County,
Georgia. He was the eighth of fourteen children. Five sisters and
two brothers preceded him in death.
He was educated in the public school system of Evans
County. He accepted Christ into his life at an early age and joined
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully until he
was called away to fight for his country. He was drafted into the
U.S. Navy during World War II in 1942, achieving the rank of petty
officer, and serving as a ship steward to the captain of the U.S.S.
WASP until 1945. Upon his return to the United States, he studied
architecture at Savannah State University.
On May 10,1958, he was united in Holy Matrimony to
Miss Martha Louise Freeman, and to this union two sons were born,
Kelsie and Kenn. He joined Good Hope Baptist Church in 1959 and
was ordained as a Deacon in 1960. He also served as a leader in
the community as a Civil Rights Activist and as a Scout Master for
the Boy Scouts of America from 1968 until 1980. He was honored
as Scout Master of the Year in 1975. After moving his family to
Miami, Florida in 1972, he served as a Deacon and a Sunday
School Teacher for twenty-eight years at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in
Miami, Florida. He worked diligently as a general contractor in
South Florida until 2001, when he moved back home to live in Clax-
ton, Georgia.
Left to cherish many fond memories are: his loving wife,
Mrs. Martha Hagan of Claxton, Georgia; three sons and two daugh-
ters-in-law: Mr. & Mrs. William (Maryann) Hagan of Tennessee, Mr.
& Mrs. Kelsie (Sylvia) Hagan, Sr. of Spartanburg, South Carolina,
and Mr. Kenn Hagan of Claxton, Georgia; five grandchildren: Cidelia
Hagan, William Hagan, III, LaNise Hagan, Kelsie Hagan, Jr. and
Chelsie Hagan; one great-grandchild. Carmen Hagan; one brother,
Mr. Booker T. Hagan of Claxton, Georgia; three sisters: Mrs. Carrie
Clark and Mrs. Viola Oglesby, both of Claxton, Georgia, and Mrs.
Minnie Bryant of Savannah, Georgia; and a host of loving and caring
nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A man with a heart of gold, thats what you were.
God put enough love In your heart to last your lifetime.
You selflessly gave your time, your wisdom and knowledge.
Sometimes even the last dollar in your pocket.
But most of all, from that heart of gold.
You gave love'^unconditionally.
You loved your family, your friends, and even your enemies.
You represented God with that love.
You were devoted and patient, you served him with honor.
You were the richest man I have ever known.
Your wealth was your heart of gold.
Your daughter-in-law,
Sylvia Hagan
