Obituary
Today, we have assembled to celebrate a life well lived. Reverend Calvin Foster
Oxendine, Sr., son of the late Orin Alders and Anna Reid Oxendine, was born March 3, 1921,
in Manassas, Georgia. He was one of nine children born into this family. On November 27,
2002, in Augusta, Georgia, God brought to a close a life dedicated to winning others to the
cause of the cross.
From a child. Reverend Oxendine was committed to bettering his condition through
education. When the family moved from Manassas to Claxton, Georgia, he went to Vidalia,
Georgia, to work and to attend the Charles Dickens School. He continued his education and
was a 1949 graduate of Georgia State College (now Savannah State University).
Reverend Oxendine was a veteran of World War II. Following his discharge from
the United States Army in 1941, he returned to the Claxton community and established
himself as a tremendous father figure, a businessman and civil rights advocate. From 1949
until his retirement in September 1983, Reverend Oxendine worked as an inspector in the
Transportation Motor Pool at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
In June of 1947, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Emma Lee Washington.
Ibgether they established a legacy of love and service for their family and the Clairton
Community. Their children, Sammy Lee, Carolyn, and Calvin, Jr., also shared Pop with his
devoted nieces, nephews, in-laws, grandchildren, and children of the community.
His call to the ministry was marked by his quest to know more about God, his
willingness to serve God and his daily demonstration of his love for Gods people. He
attended the Savannah Branch of the Turner Theological Seminary. He preached his first
sermon at Thomas Grove A.M.E. Church, Claxton, Georgia, in 1963. He was ordained as a
minister in 1967 and instated in the African Methodist Sixth Episcopal District in the Augusta
Conference. During his ministry, he pastored five charges that contained nine churches. He
spent eleven years pasturing the Mt. Vernon Circuit. In 1975, he came home to where his first
sermon was preached, Thomas Grove A.M.E. Church, and he served there until his health-
related retirement in 1986.
In the community. Reverend Oxendine was an unrelenting defender of Gods
people. Through the Church, the N.A.A.C.P., and Gladiators, he was always advocating and
resolving issues for Gods people. He served as President of the N.A.A.C.P. in 1967. He was
a lifetime member of the St. Joseph Lodge No. 76 and a member of the Gladiator Club. On
September 12, 1991, Senator Jack Hill proclaimed that Sept 12 be Rev. Calvin F. Oxendine,
Sr., Day in recognition of his accomplishments and unselfish acts of kindness in the
community.
His loving and devoted wife, Emma Lee Oxendine, a son, Samuel Lee Washington,
Sr., and a grandson, Joseph A. James, have preceded him in death.
