- Obituary -
I aft was bom November 3,1909 in
Claxton, GA., to Wilson and Alberta
Smith Brewton. After attending public
schools in Claxton, Taft lent his support
to his parents, brothers and sisters by
working the family farm, logging, and
various types of work that was available
to Black Men during that time. This ver-
satility, ambition and gumption was to be
the tools of his success in life.
Taft married Remelle Henderson on
February 14, 1937. Shortly there after,
they opened and operated a gas station
and resturant. The building that housed
the resturant and living quarters was the
first black owned two story building in
Claxton, GA. This was the beginning of
his entrepreneur enterprises which led to
his successul moving and handyman
business just prior to his illness.
Taft left Claxton, GA., for New York, in
the early 1950''s, living first in
Mamaroneck and Queens, New York
before settling in New Rochelle. He
worked in many various jobs before being
hired as a laborer for Lowen Associates, a
local construction firm. In 1976, Taft
retired from Lowen Associates, in pursuit
of his dream, to build his own home. This
was accomplished in November, 1976.
Taft's personality was an intricate
tapestry of amirable qualities, and a
''Commanding" presence. He was a
deeply religious man who lived and prac-
ticed his religion. He was ordained a
deacon in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in
Claxton. Deacon Brewton moved his
membership here to Union Baptist Chur-
ch. Taft, was an easy listner and was of-
ten called upon to counsel others with his
infinite wisdom. If song was to discribe
his life, it would be best describe by:
If I can help somebody as I pass
along
If I can cheer somebody with a word
or a song
If I can tell somebody hes travelling
wrong
Then my living shall not be in vain
Deacon Taft Brewton's life was not in
vain.
Taft is survived by is widow Remelle, six
children, Bernard, Annette, Brenda,
Marion, Tyrone and Courtney; two sisters
Eula and Beatrice Williams; one brother
Jefferson Davis "J.D.", Cheryl Brewton
and Josephine Brewton daughter-in-laws
and Dennis Peake son-in-law. The pride
and joy of his life was his eleven gran-
dchildren, Horace, Sharon, Albert, Marc,
Saudiah, Stacey, Omar, Tisha, Kiana,
Jared and Jihan. And one great grand
*A.J. , a son, Roscoe, died in July, 1987.
*And I heard a voice from heaven saying
unto me, 'write, blessed are the dead
which die in the Lord from henceforth;
yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest
from their labours; and their works do
follow them.
On Wednesday, December 20, 1989, we
lost a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, a
Brother, a Uncle and a Friend.
An old man going a lone highway
Came in the evening cold and gray
To a chasm vast and deep and wide.
The old man crossed in the twiUght dim,
The sullen stream had no fears for him,
But he stopped when safe on the other side
And built a bridge to span the tide.
Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near,
You are wasting your strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day.
You never again will pass this way.
You've crossed the chasm deep and wide.
Why build you this bridge at evening tide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head,
Good friend, in the path I have come, "he said,
There foUoweth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm which has been as naught to me
To that fair-haired youth might apitfoU be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim.
Good friend, lam building the bridge for him.

I Said A Ptayer For You Today
I said a prayer for you today
and know God must have heard -
/ felt the answer in my heart
although He spoke no word!
I didn 't ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn't mind) -
I asked Him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!
I asked that He'd be near you
at the start of each new day
To grant you health and blessings
and friends to share your way!
I a&.':ed for happiness for you
hi all things great and small
But it was for His loving Care
I prayed the most of all!
