- The correspondence is mainly between Stanley and his wife Julia. He writes from Camp Lawton (Savannah) in 1861 and from Tallahassee and Quincy, Florida. Julia writes of the panic which ensues when the families of Athens hear that the Yankees are coming. She says that Edd Lumpkin's Artillery is at Mitchell Bridge (6/11/1864). Later "...a reconnoitering party came to the hill beyond the paper mill" but Lumpkin "threw a ball among them and they fled" (8/5/1864). She also mentions prisoners being sent to Athens and that the Yankees are stealing silver and horses. There are also general orders to Captain Stanley from Brigadier General Loring announcing a defeat of the enemy at Cheat Mountain by Brigadier General Jackson.
