- This collection consists of a letter from publisher J. J. Toon to General W. P. Howard that describes the damage to Atlanta after its destruction and burning at the hands of Yankee soldiers.
J. J. Toon (1818-1893) was a Confederate publisher. He worked in Atlanta for the Confederate government from May 1862 until July 1864, when he and other printers sent their machinery to safer quarters. He had a walking cane made from the shattered flag-staff from the bombardment of Fort Sumter by General Beauregard in April of 1861.
