- The collection mainly consists of diaries of Berry Benson from 1861-1865, which detail his service as a Confederate Civil War soldier with Company H of the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment as a scout and sharpshooter. Includes information on the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Benson's capture in Spottsylvania, Virginia; his imprisonment and escape from Elmira Prison, New York; and other events in Maryland and Georgia. Persons mentioned in Benson's diaries include Benson's brother Blackwood "Bob" Benson, Frank Champion, Mike Duffy, and General Bradley Johnson. The collection also includes a manuscript (1910-1911) written by Benson entitled "A Confederate Sergeant's Adventures" later published as a chapter in Elmira Prison Camp.
