- This collection consists of two letters written in 1865 (during the Civil War) by Marie Postell: one to her son, Chase Barney Postell, and the other to her husband, William Ross Postell. The first letter contains news of the family and home during the Union occupation of Savannah, Georgia. The second letter informs her husband of the death of their two sons, including Chase, the recipient of the first letter. William Postell was a prisoner-of-war. The collection also includes copies of Barney and Chase family records, probably from a family Bible. With these papers are notes identifying the writer.
Marie Monroe Barney Postell (1821-1892) was the daughter of William Bedford Barney and Mary Chase Barney. Called "Rosa," she married William Ross Postell.
America's Turning Point: Documenting the Civil War Experience in Georgia received support from a Digitizing Historical Records grant awarded to the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Historical Society, Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the Digital Library of Georgia by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
