- This collection contains Benjamin T. Hunter's diary, in which he wrote extensively about the weather, his school, hunting, Civil War battles, drilling and camp life with the local milita, the cost of items he had purchased, and various activities he pursued in his workshop. Also included are military documents in which Hunter is ordered to arrest deserters. There are letters from J. DeWitt Burkhead regarding a teaching position in Athens, Georgia. The collection also contains papers related to Hunter's teaching career, such as a booklet entitled "Compositions of the Students of Grove Academy," and papers from the University High School which include a school phamplet, minutes of a Civil War veterans' organization in the school, and minutes from the Alpha Nu Society of the University High School.
A transcription of Benjamin T. Hunter's diary is included in folder three of this collection.
Benjamin T. Hunter (b. 1835) was born in South Carolina. He married India Hunter on May 29, 1860, and had four children: Fannie (b. 1861), Alice (b. 1863), India L. (b. 1865), and Ben T. (b. 1873). In 1863, Hunter served as 1st lieutenant of a Georgia militia unit during the Civil War. After being mustered out of the service in January 1864, he was mustered in again during October 1864. His experiences in the military consisted primarily of drilling, picket duty, skirmishing, and procuring cattle. During his break in military service from 1863-1864, Hunter taught writing in Atlanta, Georgia. After the war he taught at and later became President of the University High School in Athens, Georgia. Additional biographical information about Benjamin T. Hunter has not been determined.
