Text of marker: "MAJ. WILLIAM C. PRESTON C.S.A. Commanding Artillery Battalion attached to Maj. Gen. Alexander C. Walthall's division of Gen. Alexander P. Stewart's Corps (C.S.A.) - killed in action while supervising placement of two sections of Selden's Ala. Battery, Lt. Chas. W. Lovelace, commanding, near the Embry House, July 20, 1864, during the battle of Peachtree Creek. This battery was in support of Reynolds' brigade (C.S.A.) as it swept N.E. across the Embry plantation & the road toward the re-entrant angle of the Federal line N. of the deep ravine. Maj. Preston, a native of S. Carolina, was the "Willie Preston" of Mary Boykins Chestnut's "A Diary From Dixie." 060-48 GEORGIA HISTORICAL COMMISSION 1955" - External Identifiers:
