Lamar A/B
G e n e r a l /A l l / All
" Cyber law" is being developed by judges who must do their best to fit legal disputes on the Internet into pre-existing legal frameworks; sort of "physical space" meets "cyberspace." Internet law applies to a wide body of legal issues, including intellectual property and privacy, the First Amendment, contracts, and employment law. At the same time, Internet law is becoming more mainstream. We discuss many of these issues, such as Napster's copyright lawsuits, Phishing, monitoring of employees' Internet use, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, HIPAA, "spamming," and more. You work, play, and travel in cyberspace; shouldn 't you know the law?
Stanton Gatewood, University of Georgia

African American Male Initiative: A Recruitment and Retention Strategy for Success
Lamar A/B
General/All/Beginner
Albany State University and Darton College have created a model program to increase the recruitment and retention of minority and non-traditional students. Emphasis has been placed on the declining population of Black males who enroll and persist in higher education. The collaborative initiative has developed nationally recognized methodologies to address educational issues in the areas of academic enhancement and student success strategies. To execute its program goals and objectives, Albany State University has used its Holley Institute, an entity that supports pre-college admission opportunities for potential students by providing intensive SAT preparation, mentoring, and exposure to college life . In addition, the University initiated Armed for Success, an early enrollment program that targets minorities with an emphasis on African-American males.
Teresa Merriweather Orok and Wilbur Carver, Albany State University
Information Quality
Oglethorpe F/G
Data Warehouse/All/Intermediate
How do you know if you have good quality information at your institution? Generally, good quality information is "fit for use" by the various collectors, custodians, and customers of the data. However, different groups use the same information in different ways. Data quality rules in Banner work fine for transactional users but leave much to be desired for researchers and managers. Come learn what data attributes you need to consider in any information quality program and how to apply some of the basics.

Demonstrating the Reporting Capabilities of the Educator Preparation Data Marts
Lamar C
Data Warehouse/All/All
The real payoff for data warehousing is in the ability to meet the users' reporting needs. The initial Educator Preparation Data Marts, developed by the Office of P-16 Initiatives in collaboration with OIIT, integrate institution data on educator preparation program completers with five years of detailed teacher workforce data. This presentation demonstrates some reporting capabilities, such as analyses of where our program completers work and what they do; teacher workforce characteristics; teacher retention, attrition, and mobility issues; and potential teacher shortage areas.
Mark Pevey, Board of Regents
Financial Aid from a Technical-Functional Point of View
Lamar C
Banner/Technical and Functional/All
Managing financial aid has grown increasingly complex, requiring a greater extent of technical know-how for functional users to survive. Using some examples from our experience at Georgia Tech, this session is designed for technical and functional alike to discuss openly how we accomplish our goals through an ever-increasing use of essential technical skills. We "birds of a feather" can help each other by sharing new tricks and ideas (and perhaps notes about what we should try to avoid).
