Annual Report 2001

Dear Friend of Georgia Public Broadcasting:
The title ofour annual report for fiscal year 2001, By Georgians . . . For Georgians, accurately reflects the wonderful partnership responsible for another successful year at Georgia Public Broadcasting. We at GPB are the beneficiaries of strong support for our work from our state's governmental leaders, corporate sponsors, and foundation donors; the dedication and expertise of our talented staff; the commitment ofour volunteers, and, most importantly, the loyalty and generosity ofour members. All work together to ensure that Georgia Public Broadcasting continues to serve all Georgians - through quality programs and services over radio, television, the Internet, and through our education initiatives.
This annual report will give you an overview of our continuing growth and development, as well as a snapshot of some ofour many accomplishments. We are proud of our success and are working hard to prepare the organization for the challenges and opportunities ahead.Technology and the broadcasting industry continue to change, expand, and become an ever more important part of our lives. Because of the strong teamwork ofour staff, public and corporate sponsors, and our members, GPB is fortunate to be at the forefront of much of the change taking place. However, our commitment to you remains the same: to provide quality programs and services to all Georgians.
Georgia Public Broadcasting has a long tradition of excellence; this year marks the beginning of our fifth decade of service to Georgia citizens.Since 1961,we have been providing Georgians with television that enriches people's lives: that educates, informs, and entertains. In 1984 we began creating Georgia's only statewide public radio network with the same mission; and in 1994 as technology allowed us to expand our reach and capabilities, the education services division was born. The future of GPB is filled with promise as we continue to move forward into digital technology.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in us. Your interest and generous support allow us to continue our important work, By Georgians ... For Georgians.
Sincerely,
~~-~
James M. Lyle Executive Director

The mission of Georgia Public Broadcasting is to create, produce, and distribute high quality programs and services that educate, inform, and entertain our audiences and enrich the quality of their lives.
The books on Fiscal Year 2001are closed. By all accounts, 2001 was another very good year for Georgia Public Broadcasting and for you, the people we serve.
Together, the entire GPB family - assisted by our volunteers and supported by our members - worked hard, watched the bottom line, and maximized every opportunity to serve all Georgians.Joining forces, Georgia Public Television (GPTV) and Georgia Public Radio - the two public broadcasting divisions ofGPB - spotlighted communities and special events across the state. PeachStar Education Services, our education division, began exploring ways to make GPTV and Georgia Public Radio programs more easily accessible to educators, expanding the use of our broadcast content across multiple media.
Content ... a new term for a 40-year-old service.Since 1961,Georgia Public Broadcasting has created programming - content - to enrich the lives ofall Georgians. The low-tech, no frills black-and-white instructional programs of the early 1960s have transformed into nationally recognized public television, public radio, and educational services. Today,Georgia Public Broadcasting's content is extensive and exciting. Last year, GPTV created and aired six different locally produced weekly series for a total of235 episodes.. . telling your stories, from Lookout Mountain to the Okefenokee Swamp, from Atlanta to Cairo. For instance, in addition to its regular weekly news about businesses across Georgia, GPTV's Georgia Business Report produced a series of month-long segments focusing on specific Georgia cities and regions, including Augusta, Albany and Southwest Georgia, Athens, Columbus, Savannah, Macon, and North Georgia. Georgia Public Radio's Georgia Gazette produced a similar series for its listeners.
Reaching out to and connecting with citizens like you across Georgia, GPB showcases our state's treasures our dynamic arts organizations and cultural institutions; our diverse and beautiful natural world; our thriving businesses; and fascinating people - that make Georgia unique. Listeners and viewers, teachers, parents, and students ... Georgians in all walks of life relyon Georgia Public Broadcasting for educational, informative, and entertaining content that enriches the quality of their lives.
As we look ahead and begin to celebrate our 40 years of service, Georgia Public Broadcasting will continue to provide the content you have come to expect, from our award-winning locally produced radio and television programs to the 3,000 hours of commercial- and violence-free educational television programming for children to the unparalleled resources we provide for Georgia's educators. We will continue to seek new and expand existing community partnerships that will provide value to our audiences. Whether we're working with conmmnity partners or with our own GPI3 colleagues, we recognize that our strength and our potential for unlimited growth and public service lies in working together.
As we move into our fifth decade of service, we renew our commitment to our mission. With your help, Georgia Public Broadcasting will continue to create, produce, and distribute high quality programs and services that educate, inform, and entertain our audiences and enrich the quality oftheir lives ... for the next 40 years and beyond.

G'PTVO
Your PBS Station Serving All of Georgia
The Strength and Prestige of PBS
Your generous financial support in FY 2001 allowed GPTV to purchase and broadcast programs ofextraordinary quality, depth, and interest from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
Georgia Public Television has been the PBS station serving all of Georgia since 1961, offering exciting new shows presented by PBS, as well as PBS favorites like Antiques Roadshow and beloved children's programs. For example, in FY 2001 Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary, Jazz, premiered in Atlanta at The Carter Center through a local partnership with General Motors, GPTV, and the United Negro College Fund. Ken Burns made a personal appearance, narrating the Atlanta preview and taking questions from the invitation-only audience, which included many Georgia Public Broadcasting members. Thanks to your support and our PBS affiliation, in FY 2001 GPTV consistently brought the best in commercial-free, thought-provoking television to Georgia viewers, statewide.
GPTV - By Georgians for Georgians
During FY 2001, GPTV's original program development significantly increased with the completion of several major projects. Final Choices: Valley ofthe Shadow and Final Choices: Changing a Culture examined end-of-life choices. Hosea in His Own Words was one ofthe last videotaped interviews with the late civil rights leader Hosea \i\lilliams. It's Still My Life examined the lives of five Georgians with traumatic brain injuries. For the second year, GPTV produced a special spotlighting the University of Georgia's prestigious Peabody Awards. The special aired on GPTV and on PBS stations across the country. The Secret Seashore: Georgia's Barrier Islands taught viewers about 13 of
the 17 jewel-like, legendary islands that dot offshore Georgia. Georgia's Watch on Washington returned to GPTV in May and featured interviews with members of Georgia's congressional delegation about national issues witl1 local impact.
In addition, GPTV produced and aired our six core local series that focus on every corner of our state: Georgia Week in Review, Prep Sports +, Georgia Outdoors, Gardening in Georgia, Lawmakers, and Georgia Business Report, which included an exclusive interview witl1 Mikhail Gorbachev. GPTV also produced live broadcasts ofthe state football championships and the state basketball championships - all to rave reviews, statewide. In September, the Georgia MusicHall ofFame induction dinner was broadcast live to enthusiastic audiences across the state.
In FY 200I, GPTV's work was widely recognized for excellence. GPTV brought home National Headliner Awards, Southeastern Regional Emmy Awards, Sigma Delta Chi Awards, and was honored by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. (Please see Page 8 for a complete listingofGPB's awards and honors.)

GPTV partnered with the Atlanta Press Club in FY2001 to produce statewide debate broadcasts leading up to the November 2000 elections. Then, GPTV and WSB joined forces to present live Election Night coverage.

GPTV and the High Museum ofArt reached an agreement to produce a new series ofarts programs for use on GPTV and PeachStar.

GPTV Programs Put the National Spotlight on Georgia
Creating a stronger national GPTV presence is an on-going goal - one that was defined and met in several ways during FY 2001 :

GPTV's special two-part series Final Choices was honored with a national award: First Place in Public Service Television Program,Documentaries by the National Headliner Awards, one of the oldest and largest annual programs recognizing journalistic merit in radio, television, writing, reporting, photography, and graphics.GPTV was the only public television station honored this year.

Hosea in His Own Words, It's Still My Life, and the Peabody Awards were accepted for PBSdistribution to stations nationwide.

GPTV was one of only five PBS stations selected to participate in the three-hour national program, Time to Choose, a pre-election special focusing on voters' choices and including over 50 Georgia voters. Time to Choose was a collaboration of PBS, National Public Radio (NPR), and MacNeil-Lehrer Productions.

As one of seven PBS stations selected to pilot PBS's new prime time schedule,GPTVgave Georgians a first look at what would be PBS's new line-up.

Georgia PublicRadi~
Your Source for Great Music and NPR News
The Strength and Prestige ofNPR & PRI
Your generous financial support in FY 2001 allowed Georgia Public Radio to purchase and broadcast programs of extraordinary quality, depth, and interest from National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International (PR!).
Georgia Public Radio has been Georgia's statewide source for great music and NPR news since 1984. ln January 2001 Georgia Public Radio (formerly Peach State Public Radio) introduced its new name, which reflects its position as Georgia's
only statewide public radio network. As a network affiliate of NPR and PR!, in FY 200I Georgia Public Radio brought its listeners national news, public radio favorites such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, A Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, The Metropolitan Opera and much more.
Community Partnerships Create Community Programming
In May, Georgia Public Radio spotlighted Renaissance Week in Columbus, putting down stakes in the city for a full week ofcultural entertainment. The centerpiece of the
week's activities was a spectacular performance by Grammy-winning performers Branford Marsalis and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at the historic Springer Opera House.Georgia Public Radio also presented world-class pianist John Davis who gave a lecture recital and concert in which he discussed the works of"Blind" Tom Bethune, an accomplished musician and Columbus native who performed at the Springer Opera House in the late 1800s. Columbus was also the focus of locally produced programs such as Georgia Gazette and Cover to Cover, and Soundscapes opened each day's show with music by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the week, stories about Columbus were broadcast statewide as a part ofMorningEdition.
Georgia Public Radio's locally produced news and cultural programs continued to win acclaim, including awards from Public Radio News Directors Inc., the Georgia Associated Press (AP), the Georgia Association of Broadcasters (the Gabbys), theAtlanta Association of Black Journalists, and the Georgia Bar Association. When Cover to Cover won a Gabby in FY 200I for the Best Locally Produced Show, Georgia Public Radio has won that category for three of the past four years. (Please see Page 8for a complete listing ofGPB~ awards and honors.)

Latin Beat - premiering statewide in October 2000 - was more than a music show; it was the heartbeat of Georgia's Hispanic community, providing Latino music, as well as timely and informative interviews with musicians and newsmakers.Among the many guests featured were Arturo Sandoval,a world renowned jazz trumpet player.

Georgia Public Radio Special Productions included Ted Hughes: A Tribute in Verse, which aired on the second anniversary of the British Poet Laureate's death; The Margaret Mitchell Centenary, a fivepart series that looked back to Mitchell's childhood writings and her feature stories written for the Atlanta Journal; Giant Steps, a Black History Month special, explored the jazz in poetry and the poetry in jazz; and Georgia Poets in Performance, which aired during National Poetry Month, featured Georgia poets reading from their works.

For Teachers By Teachers

Since its inception u11994, the mission of the education division of Georgia Public Broadcasting has been to provide high quality programming to enrich, inform, and support the Georgia learning conununity. We accomplish this mission by offering our valuable educational resources through a variety of media, including videos, satellite broadcasts, openair television (GPTV), print, and multiple Internet-based formats. By taking advantage ofall the technologies currently available to deliver programming, PeachStar is able to meet the diverse needs and technological capabilities ofGeorgia educators and learners in all parts of the state.

Over the course of fiscal year 2001, more than ever, PeachStar demonstrated its motto: "For Teachers ... By Teachers."By including educators in every step of our planning, program acquisition and development, scheduling, and training, PeachStar ensured greater satisfaction with our programs and services,as well as increased teachers' understanding of GPB's capabilities and how better to use our programs and services to support their classroom efforts.

Some of the major accomplishments of PeachStar Education Services during FY 200l include:

Responded to more than 1,300 special requests from classroom teachers through tl1e Video On Request program.

Provided approximately200 hours of special broadcasts, including educational and informational teleconferences, workshops, training sessions, and continuing education credit programs for educators and other professionals.

~

lnstituted a structured ProgrammingAcquisition Process that includes teachers in the evaluation and selection of all new PeachStar programs, which are aligned with and support the state-mandated Georgia Quality Core Curriculum (QCC).

Developed our own QCC Correlation Project to ensure that all PeachStar resources and programs correspond with and are matched to the state's QCC objectives.

Designed and instituted a Teacher-In-Residence Program that gives Georgia teachers the skills and u1formation they need to integrate PeachStar offerings and technology fully and effectively to support theuclassroom activities.

Final Choices brought home three major awards, and was an intensely personal project everyone who worked on it, especially its host, journalist Leigh Green.Terminally ill with cancer, Green saw this important, informative, critically acclaimed program as his fi nal legacy to family, friends, and television viewers throughout Georgia. Green interviewed families of terminally ill patients about the options they had and the choices they were making about end-of-life care of their loved ones, and as host, talked about his own choices. Final Choices encouraged viewers to make important decisions concerning their preferences for endof-life health care while they are still physically capable.
