2011
Georgia Student Finance Commission
Annual Report
From GSFC's President
With 2011 behind us, we have set our sights on the upcoming year with the intent of attaining new goals that will carry Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) even further toward achieving its mission to promote and increase access to education beyond high school for Georgians. And while we look forward, it is also appropriate to look back of the past year to document and acknowledge GSFC's accomplishments. It is my pleasure, therefore, to share with you GSFC's financial results and key achievements for FY 2011.
The Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) is the state agency that connects Georgians to resources needed to plan for and fund higher education. As a state agency, GSFC ensures that the important work we do continues to make a difference in the lives of many Georgians.
GSFC awards almost $800 million of financial aid to Georgia students each year, insures nearly $1 billion in federal student loans against default, and manages the collection of payments on more than $200 million in student loans.
GSFC continues to operate www.GAcollege411.org, the state's website that provides resources for planning, applying and paying for college. GAcollege411.org has become an indispensable tool for parents, teachers, counselors, and others to use with students to identify and pursue rewarding careers, develop and manage high school graduation plans, research and evaluate postsecondary options, and identify and obtain financial aid.
In addition to these valuable resources, the agency also provides tremendous support to college-going students through numerous personal outreach strategies at college planning events, assisting middle and high school counselors in their counseling efforts, and helping students complete college and financial aid applications.
Below are several agency wide highlights which reflect GSFC's commitment to promoting access to educational services and higher education for Georgians:
Administered $748 million in HOPE awards to help 256,502 Georgia students attend college.
Provided outreach services to 95,000 Georgians through workshops, counseling and fairs.
Conducted 1,680 presentations at middle and high schools, colleges and universities.
Prevented borrower default on $278,785,746 in federal student loans.
Thank you to all of our partners for supporting GSFC during these challenging times. We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to new opportunities in the future.
Sincerely,
Timothy A. Connell GSFC President
