ANNUAL REPORT SATILLA RIVER SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

THE SATILLA RIVER SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT WAS ORGANIZED BY A CHARTER WHICH WAS ISSUED BY THE SECRETARY OF THE STATE ON MAY 2, 1942 UNDER A PROVISION OF THE GEORGIA SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT LAW OF 1937. THE SATILLA RIVER DISTRICT COMPRISES AN AREA OF 2,907,520 ACRES, MAKING IT THE LARGEST DISTRICT EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THE SATILLA RIVER DISTRICT HAS TWO SUPERVISORS ONE FROM EACH COUNTY- ONE WHO IS APPOINTED BY THE STATE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION COMMISSION AND ONE WHO IS ELECTED BY REGISTERED VOTERS OF THE COUNTY IN A SPECIAL ELECTION. ALL DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS VOLUNTARILY GIVE OF THEIR TIME TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION. THE DISTRICT WAS ORGANIZED TO GIVE LOCAL LEADERSHIP IN HELPING THE NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION SERVICE, A DIVISION OF THE U S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TO ESTABLISH COOPERATING LANDOWNERS AND LANDUSERS WITH SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION PROBLEMS. THE SATILLA RIVER BOARD OF SUPERVISORS PROVIDES LEADERSHIP IN MAKING THE MOST EFFECTIVE USE OF CONSERVATION FUNDS AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE DISTRICT.
DISTRICT ACTIVITIES
A major portion of the Board's job involves publicity and promotional programs - programs that help to make the public aware of the continuing need to conserve soil and water and improve water quality.
1. Sponsored Soil and Water Stewardship Week April 28th through May 4th. 2. Worked with area planning and development commission, city and county units of government. 3. Distributed soil and water conservation district promotional materials through out the District. 4. Sponsored students to the Natural Resources Workshop. 5. Provided environmental educational material to students in the District. 6. Sponsored the Woodbine Tree Care Seminar on February 28th to provide conservation related informa-
tion utilizing trees in an urban environment. 7. Reviewed erosion and sediment control plans as required by the Erosion and Sedimentation Act of 1975. 8. District held the Ware County Forestry Management Workshop on October 18th as well as a Forage Field
Day in Wayne County on October 19th. 9. Held annual Christmas luncheon, invited wives, guest speakers and chaplain. 10. District supported and promoted the Hurricane/Little Satilla 319 11. Supported conservation on the national and state level through NACD and GACDS by paying dues on
time. 12. Supported the Coastal Georgia and Seven Rivers Resource Conservation and Development Council

Projects.

13. Developed a budget and established committees to carry out District programs. 14. Secured additional funds from each County to assist in District programs. 15. Participated in CoastFest and supplied attendees with conservation teaching
aides. 16. Continued a Memoriam of Agreement between the Farm Service Agency and the Satilla River
District. 17. Reviewed Memo of Understanding between District, NRCS, CFSA and others. 18. Encouraged participation in the Forestry Stewardship Program. 19. Encouraged good attendance by supervisors at monthly meetings.. 20. Promoted the use of the State Conservation Commission Best Management Practices 21. The District ordered pocket calendars and rain gauges for the landowners. 22. Encouraged supervisors to attend the Summer Group V Meeting in Statesboro.. 23. Sponsored Erosion and Sediment Control Certification Seminars to educate the public about Ero-
sion and Sediment Control Laws and Regulations. 24. District supported the purchase of land in Oconee County by GACDS with plans to build an office
in the future. 25. Supported the Urban 319 Project to hire an E&S Inspector to assist with plan reviews and inspec-
tions in LIA jurisdiction. 26. Co-sponsored a Georgia Dirt and Gravel Roads Workshop on May 23rd in Waycross. 27. Sponsored a New Farmer Workshop in Blackshear to teach the theme of "Working Effectively To-
gether" and offered information on governmental programs. 28. Sponsored an Ag. Best Management Practices Demonstration Workshop in Pierce County.
THE GOAL OF THE SATILLA RIVER DISTRICT IS TO USE EACH ACRE OF LAND WITHIN ITS CAPABILITIES AND TO TREAT EACH ACRE ACCORDING TO ITS NEEDS.

The Satilla River Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors would like to take this opportunity to thank the landowners and landusers of the District who are doing outstanding work in applying soil and water conservation practices.
During the past year, the District has been assisted by many agencies. The Board would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Farm Service Agency ,Vocational Agriculture, the Georgia Forestry Commission, the Cooperative Extension Service, the County Commissions in the eight counties and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
