OVERVIEW
The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) houses nearly 54,000 offenders. As a result, some GDC facilities have special and unique missions help best meet the needs of offenders.
SPECIAL MISSION FACILITIES
Augusta State Medical Prison, Grovetown Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, Jackson Georgia State Prison, Reidsville
Augusta State Medical Prison (ASMP)
Constructed in 1982 Close security facility Houses up to 1,326 offenders Provides centralized acute care, special and severe medical
services for both male and female offenders such as Dialysis services, palliative care, statewide tuberculosis clinic, oral surgery, surgical services, infirmary, accommodated living and pre-op and post-op Provides Level IV mental health (MH) services Provides Crisis Stabilization and Acute care for MH population Diagnostics Tier II Mental Health and In-Reach programs Serves as a sex offender release site
Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison (GDCP)
Constructed in 1968 Close security facility Houses up to 2,487 male offenders to include Under Death
Sentence (UDS) offenders State court-ordered executions are carried out at GDCP Provides a Special Management Program (192 beds) Diagnostic facility
All male offenders are processed through GDCP Approximately 500 offenders are processed each week Approximately 400 offenders are transferred out of the
facility per week Length of processing is two weeks Process determines medical, psychological and
educational needs of each offender as well as security level Parole review is also completed during process. GDCP does not offer outside details Inside details offered include fire station, general and grounds maintenance, waste water, power house, canine and laundry
Georgia State Prison (GSP)
Constructed in 1937, renovated in 1979 Medium security facility Houses up to 1,530 male offenders GSP houses general population, mental health and
recalcitrant and aggressive male offenders Transfer hub for the Southeast Houses a mobile surgicial unit Provides three contract details to Georgia Correctional
Industries (GCI), grounds and outside maintenance and mobile construction
UNIQUE MISSION FACILITIES
Several prisons within the GDC system, have unique missions to fit the needs of prison populations that require specialized programming.
Burruss Correctional Training Center, Forsyth Coastal State Prison, Garden City Walker State Prison, Rock Springs
Burruss Correctional Training Center
Constructed in 1986 Medium security facility Houses up to 806 male offenders Houses the majority of youthful offenders for the state
Capacity for 82 offenders sentenced as adults between 14-16 years of age and at-risk youth offenders between 17-21 years of age
Highly structured program with a military regimen Facility provides work and rehabilitation programs for
600 general population offenders Provides outside work details for the following loca-
tions: Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC), State Offices South at Tift College, City of Forsyth, Forsyth National Guard Armory, Forsyth Police Department, Forestry Department, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Department of Transportation (DOT) and Weigh Station, Covington DOT, Mobile Construction, Georgia State Patrol (GSP), GDC Care & Custody Warehouse, Jackson National Guard Armory, City of Barnesville, Butts County, and GDCP grounds and High-Max Host facility for West Central Integrated Treatment Facility

Coastal State Prison
Constructed in 1981 Medium security facility Houses up to 1,836 male offenders Provides diagnostic intake services for the Strategic
Intervention Program (SIP) which consists of a boot camp, Intensive Reentry program and a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program (RSAT). In addition, there is a Probation RSAT program. Provides a Faith and Character based program and four assisted living dorms Outside work detail for the DOT and Garden City Host facility for Coastal Transitional Center
Walker State Prison
Constructed in 1972, renovated in 2000 Medium security facility Houses up to 444 male offenders Only Faith and Character based prison in the state Houses up to 200 Probation RSAT detainees within the
Northwest RSAT Center Provides work details to Catoosa and Walker counties
and the City of Fort Oglethorpe
