Record Growth: 1.5 Million TEUs Port of Savannah

On July 29, 2003, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue visited the Port of Savannah to announce that, for the first time in its history, the Port of Savannah had surpassed 1. 5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in a single fiscal year. "The Georgia Ports Authority is one of our greatest economic assets," said Governor Perdue. "Out ports are experiencing excellent growth, which helps to create new jobs all over the state. "

In June of this year, the Department of Homeland Security awarded $1.2 million in Port Security grants for the Port of Savannah to make additional lighting improvements and install motion detection sensors.
Since 9/11, the GPA has instituted heightened security measures and invested millions of dollars in security, including: increased police and security staff, and increased strategically placed surveillance equipment.
