The school bus arrived at gate number one right on schedule one of the many we have each year for port tours
As I stepped on board the teacher in charg was just giving her pupils last minute instructions no talking and pay attention to what Mr Bisson tells you
Good morning boys and girls I said They answered in unison Good morning Mr Bisson and that was the last sound they uttered until we concluded our tour some thirty minutes later
The group was made up of fourth graders As I called for questions at the end of the tour I remembered a typical question from my first such tour some eleven years ago how much does an anchor weigh Today
my first question was how does the port finance its capitol improvement program This from the mouth of a fourth grader Im still working on the weight of an anchor Other questions asked were how many ships per month is paper our largest export doesnt jute come from India were studying about that is the river polluted
These kids are sharp They have to be in order to survive their lousy legacy the world today But I somehow feel they will not only survive their inheritance they will also prove to be its salvation

Seminole Steel Locates New Barge Fabrication Operation at Inland Port
The Seminole Steel Company has begun construction of a barge fabrication operation on a 50 acre site adjoining the Georgia Ports Authoritys inland barge terminal at Bainbridge
Seminole Steel is a new division of the Ingalls Iron Works Company of Birmingham Alabama the largest independent structural steel fabricator in the world
Mr Sam Boykin President and Chairman of the Board of Ingalls Iron Works said the works will use plated steel primarily from Gadsden and Birmingham Alabama to construct bulk transportation barges for inland waterway use according to customer specifications The steel will be fabricated into barges on a
series of ways in the yard much like an assembly line turning out a completely finished product to be launched into the river for transport to the buyer A typical barge might be 40 feet wide 100 feet long and have a draft of 9 feet Construction time necessary to produce the barges ordered could vary from 90 days to 9 months depending upon the size complexity and sophistication of the equipment specified
The available interchange of water rail and highway transportation and an attractive employment potential were substantial considerations in selecting Bainbridge as the plant site according to Mr Boykin The prospect of continued development of river transportation on the Flint
system was also attractive
Mr Boykin expresed the companys satisfaction with the decision to locate at Bainbridge and was particularly complimentary about the the efforts of the Georgia Ports Authority local civic leaders and former Ports Authority member Hubert Dollar for assistance in putting together a suitable land package for a site
River transportation looks better all the time Boykin noted particularly as fuel considerations make bulk transportation more important It is just beginning to have its significance felt and it will most certainly attain greater importance in coming years

The new plant for Leavitt Tube Division of Unarco Industries Chicago will be located on a twentyfive acre tract of land directly adjoining the Georgia Ports Authoritys Columbus Barge Terminal
Michael H Rosenzweig Vice PresidentSales Leavitt Tube stated that the Columbus site was chosen for the new plant due to its close proximity to the interstate highway and river transportation
Daniel L Smith Project Manager Rivers and Harbors Georgia Ports Authority said that full details of the multimiilion dollar facility will be released by Unarco at a later date after all construction bids are received and approved
Unarco Industries Inc comprised of nine operating divisions ranks in the top 1000 in Fortune magazines
list of the largest U S industrial corporations
Leavitt Tube Unarcos largest division uses the bulk of all the steel purchased by Unarco upwards of 300 thousand tons a year
Leavitt processes steel into tubing round square and rectangular The light tough strong tubing from Leavitt becomes a key component of complex industrial and agricultural machines automobiles playground equipment signs fencing furniture buildings and communication towers
Swann Oil Begins SavannahAugusta Operations
On March 13th of this year the Swann Oil Company of Georgias tug the Lottie Swann and its barge Swann 18 made its maiden voyage from Savannah to Augusta via the Savannah River
The 296 foot barge arrived in Augusta on March 15th with 11000 barrels or 462000 gallons of No 4 fuel oil
At a time when the petroleum industry as a whole is forced to reevaluate its relative position in the energy market Swann Oil is implementing innovative service designed
to provide local industry with effective continuity of energy fuel supplies said David J Swann officer and director of Swann Oil of Georgia and its parent company Swann Oil Inc
While perhaps not as earth shattering as Neil Armstrongs historic first step on the moon the maiden voyage of our tug and barge created the same degree of excitement for those of us who were involved in this project Swann told a gathering during a commemoriative ceremony at the companys Augusta Terminal
Despite some minor mechanical problems we can say without qualification that the barges maiden voyage was a genuine success Swann said
Not only does this first trip up the river effectively link our residual oil terminal here in Augusta with our other strategically located petroleum terminals on the East Coast Swann said but it reconfirms the Savannah River as a viable avenue for commercial trade and river transportation
The Swann 18 is 54 feet wide and

Swann Oil deep water petroleum cargo terminal in Philadelphia harbor has storage capacity of over one million barrels of fuel oil A similar terminal is now under constructon at Savannah

has a draft of 1V2 feet and a capacity of 16500 barrels or 696000 gallons Its doubleskinned hull is specially designed for residual fuel oils and is equipped with its own internal heating system and dual bow thrusters
It was built at the Gretna Machine Works New Orleans La and is constructed to allow modification for deck loading of up to 800 tons of cargo for transportation down river to Savannah
The 50foot Lottie Swann is a 750
horsepower pushertype tug It was piloted on its maiden voyage by Marion Kirkendohl of Augusta
A 950 horsepower Marie Swann is nearing completion in Maryland and will be put into service on the Savannah River with a regular run between Savannah and Augusta within the next few months
Swann Oil Inc made petroleum history early in 1973 when it opened the first independent deepwater petroleum cargo terminal in the port of Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Mr Horst Winter European Director for the Georgia Ports Authority from Bonn Germany visited the United States in April on a reorientation trip to inspect new port facilities Spending almost a month in the USA he visited with exporters importers freight forwarders and Customhouse brokers whose business activities are in Europe

United States Lines Direct Container Service To Bermuda and the Bahamas
United States Lines has extended its TriContinent containerized freight operation to provide direct service to Bermuda and the Bahamas
Edward J Heine Jr president of United States Lines announced that the company has entered into an exclusive contract with Bermuda Express Service
Under the agreement Mr Heine said United Lines Containerliners bound from the West Coast the Far East and Europe will transfer cargo
at Savannah to be carried to the Islands aboard Bermuda Express Services Container Motor Vessels
This service will give these islands swift and direct access to the major markets and ports of the world Mr Heine said It is a first in terms of regular containerized service for Bermuda and the Bahamas he added
United States Lines will surpass what has been irregular service by break bulk carriers with weekly containerized service from the West

Coast and fortnightly service from Europe and the Far East which will cut many days from previous schedules Mr Heine said
For example transit time from the Far East to Bermuda which has had no direct access will be reduced almost three times from 90 days to 35 days
United States Lines will use only 20foot containers which are well
tailored for the narrow island roads The company is presently consolidating less than container loads from its Far East ports and hopes to provide that benefit to its European shippers in the near future

A Lot of Yachts
Six yachts ranging in size from 28 feet to 53 feet were recently loaded aboard the MS Daniella at the Georgia Ports Authoritys Garden City Terminal destined for Valencia Spain
Three of the smaller yachts were delivered shipside by motor carrier while the two 38 footers from Miami Florida and the 53 footer manufactured in High Point North Carolina arrived under their own power via the intracoastal waterway and
were hoisted aboard the Daniella from the water
