Introduction
This third edition of Licensed and Certified Occupations in Georgia was produced by the Workforce Information and Analysis Division of the Georgia Department of Labor. This publication will provide students, job seekers, counselors and other interested persons with information about the occupations that require licensing or certification in Georgia as well as occupations that offer certification without requirement.
The occupations included in this publication are considered licensed or certified. In general, a license grants an individual permission to engage in a given occupation after having obtained the minimum degree of competency necessary to ensure that the public health, safety and welfare will be reasonably well protected. A certificate grants an individual permission to use a specific title after having met predetermined qualifications established by a regulatory agency or professional organization. In practice, few people differentiate between the two forms of credentials, and certain education, experience, and/or competency standards must typically be met in order to qualify for either credential.
The Licensed and Certified Occupations in Georgia publication serves as a valuable resource for those individuals exploring career options. Occupations represented in this publication are addressed separately with seven types of information provided. For each occupation, a general job description is given along with the applicant requirements, licensing or certifying agency, fees, examination information, professional associations and related occupational titles and codes are shown where applicable.
Individuals wanting to obtain additional information about any of the occupations listed should contact the appropriate licensing or certifying agency or related professional association. Other information sources are identified by the related occupational titles and codes, as follows:
DOT the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, a resource found in many libraries which gives detailed information on the work performed in many occupations; and
OES Occupational Employment Statistics, a classification system used in the Georgia Department of Labor's occupational projections program and in its publication Georgia Wage Survey (through the 2000 edition); and

SOC Standard Occupational Classification, a classification system used in the Georgia Department of Labor's occupational projections program and in its publication Georgia Wage Survey (from the 2001 edition forward).
Licensed and Certified Occupations in Georgia is a publication of the Georgia Department of Labor's Workforce Information and Analysis Division under the direction of Amelia Butts. The Occupational Information Services unit was responsible for this project under the supervision of Joe Newsome. The publication was prepared by Ridley Hubbard with support from Ralph Towler, Betty Auten, and Yvonne Little. Additional assistance was provided by Karen Gilbreath of the Georgia Career Information Center at Georgia State University. Helen Kim was responsible for the design and layout.
Our research has identified many occupations that require a license and/or certificate in the state of Georgia as well as occupations where certification is not a requirement, but is considered the attainment of a certain level of proficiency in a particular field. However, there may be additional occupations or careers requiring licensure or certification in Georgia, or others that provide beneficial certification that are not mandatory that we have not been able to identify. Therefore, the information presented in this publication is subject to change. Additional access to the information contained in this publication, as well as recent updates, can be found on the Georgia Department of Labor's website at www.dol.state.ga.us under Workforce Information & Analysis. We will appreciate any comments or information that will assist in improving future editions.
