Total employment in WIA Area #2 is expected to grow from more than 237,000 jobs in 2008 to almost 291,000 by the year 2018, which equates to more than 5,300 new jobs added each year. This area's main industry is poultry processing. Its principal city, Gainesville, is aptly nicknamed "the poultry capital of the world", as it is the national leader in the production of broiler chickens and the third largest producer of chicken eggs, making it the state's largest manufacturer of food products. Other key industries include education, textile mills, health services, agriculture, fabricated metal manufacturing, and machinery manufacturing.
