. With the dilapidated machin ery in the Capitol, we

find it ve ry h ard t o keep th e building ,comfortable.

At one period, we could n ot obtain coal at an y price
and bought about two hundred co~ds of wood from

the farm er s in the State th at tided u s over, and to-

day we have on h and ab out fift y cords of wood paid

fo r t o mix with coal th e coming winter.

,Ve find the Canitol n eeds r epairing and th e dom e mu st be attended-to at once, or seriou~ con sequen ces

Inview of the hi gh ' prices of labor and ' all kind s

of supplies , a more liber al app ropriatio n should be

to provide needed work ' on Capitol.

The room in the Ca~itol is inadequat e and some

arrangement s sho uld be 'made f or more ro om, as

many new departments have been added. I leav e

it t o the wisdom of the L egi slature t o devi se some

plan by whi ch the congestion may be r elieved.

Th e Governor's Mansion is in a state of deca-

dence, and it r equires heroi c work to keep it inhabitabl e. It appears fr om the cost that the State is

subject to in keeping up the Governor's Man sion

that it would be wise for the Legislature t o di s-

pose of this splendid property, whi ch could be util -

ized f or the erection of comme rc ial buildings and

bring the st ate a great r evenue, and erect a build-

ing fo r the Gover nor in a suitable place.

The K eep er of the Public Buildings and Gr ounds is proud to r eport that the force in the Capit ol is working harmoni ou sly and, with the Governor, has the interest of the great commonwealth at heart.
The Chair man of the Committee of the Public Buildings and Grounds went over the Capit ol with the E nginee r and K eep er of Public Buildings and Gro unds from dom e to cell ar and has occular evidence of the wants and condition of the Capitol.
In conclusion, if my administration has, beep a succe ss-c-and I leave that to the public-e-I f eel that it has been brought about by everypersori, maleand female, in the' Capitol, in , their hearty co-op eration
