Two basement-level floors on the Perry Campus are being modernized through the governor's emergency fund. The finished dormitories will accomodate seventy-five students. They are being built with the smaller child in mind All of the furnishings and plumbing facilities are geared for the smaller child. November is our goal for getting all of the new students into the very modern, air-conditioned and carpeted dormitories.

IT'S----
It's greeting a new day with all its problems overshadowed by all its joys.
It's a cheerful "Good Morning" from the child you punished just yesterday.
It's hearing each pupil pray devoutly, "Dear Father in heaven, thank you for my school."
It's toiling with dedicated, hardworking, congenial people who have a common goal- to introduce the minds of deaf children to words and to all the wonderful things that follow.
It's observing September's sad homesickness soon replaced by gay delight in friends and good times at school.
It's eyes full of mischief, humor, anger, happiness, distress, interest -and love.
It's the patience-trying repetition so often necessary in the attempt to teach one simple idea.
It's tiny fingers flying madly and excitedly upon the discovery of the communication of signs .
It's a little boy standing in the corner stomping his foot at Miss Casey.
It's opening minds to the wonder of books, trying so hard to instill the love of reading- but often failing.
It's the endless cutting-out of pictures.
It's the adventure of outdoorsfinding a bird's nest, spying a lovely wild flower, or chasing an elusive grasshopper.
It's the feel of excitement in the air on the most special day in the week-SWIMMING DAY!!!
Head Selected
Jack W. Brady has been appionted by the State Board of Education as director of the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, report Jack P . Nix, state superintendent of schools.
Currently under construction in DeKalb County near Clarkston, the new school will be Georgia's second state institution maintained expressly for the deaf. Until now, the School for the Deaf at Cave Spring, founded in 1846, has been Georgia's only public school for the deaf.
Previous to his appointment, Brady had been superintendent of the Kentucky School for the Deaf for five years.
Since 1950 he has served as a coach, teacher, principal, counselor and superintendent in schools for the deaf in West Virginia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and at Cave Spring.
A native of Waycross, Brady and his wife ha ve two daughters . Mrs. Brady is a qualified teacher of the deaf. She, too, taught at Cave Spring formerly.
Mr. Brady is president-elect of the Convention of Amercian Instructors of the Deaf.

On Tuesday, October 5, 1971, more than 500 of our students were the guests of the Cedartown Jaycees at the Sells and Gray Circus performance.

It's the most important job of all, that of teaching things that cannot be found in books-integrity, independence, morality, optimism, neatness, kindness, responsibility, and unselfishness.
It's a multitude of things-fulfillment, heartbreak, discouragement, joy, 1\nticipation, frustration, exasperation, accomplishment, exhileration, fatigue-and it's all made worthwhile when a smiling imp looks up at you and says almost distinctly, "I love you."

THE MIND OF A CHILD
The mind of a child is a beautiful
place ,
An Eden where many things
grow,
A garden of beauty where , shelter-
ed by love,
Grow flowers in row upon row.
The mind of a child is a wonderful
place
Where wishes and dreams are
so real,
.
Where kittens and puppies and
gingerbread men
Can talk and actually feel.
The mind of a child is a mystical
place
Where character grows like a
tree ,
And children become either better
or worse
By actions of you , or of me.

New Vocational Building
Application has been made for funds to construct a new vocational building. The building will be con-
structed on the Route One campus near the present printing building,
and will be the first phase in the new Master Plan for the entire school plant.
The State Board of Education has employed the architectural firm of Barker and Cunningham to develop the Master Plan. The architects for the Vocational building are Reynolds, Bailey and Vrooman,
Inc. State Qfficals have assured us that the vocational building will be started in the spring, perhaps April , and will be ready for occupancy the first part of the year 1973
The building will cost $600,000, including all fees and charges. Half of the $600,000 will come from the State Departmemt of Education and half will come from the Appalachian Regional Commission, an agency of the federal government.

New Dorms on Route One Campus
The contractors have finished their part on the new dormitories on the Route One Campus, and we will be moving children into these areas after the Christmas holidays. There is room for 68 children in these dormitories which are divided into three areas. Most of the furniture is built-in and there is deep carpet on the floors, nice colors on the walls, and wonderful lighting. The dormitories are completely air conditioned and we think that these are the best dormitories we have had .

COMMUNICATION The fourth grade class is busy with a language assignment. No one knows exactly how language began, but there is no doubt why. In attempting to convey to the deaf the vastness of the field of communication, we have studied the many and varied ways of communicating. We find that ideally the spoken and written language is the most desirable and the most effective. However, for this particular class we find that "TOTAL" communication works best.

FIFTH GRADE Controlled Reading is one phase of this fifth grade's reading activities. At this time we are previewing a story. The vocabulary will follow with the use of each word in a sentence. A teacher-made test will be given during the next peroid. The class will also match words to sentences , and finally th ~st~ is s_~own again with the class writin the questions on a sheet of paper and checking the right answers. A score sheet is kept in the classroom so that each child can see how she or he progresses.

The trip to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, started on the afternoon of November 30, 1971. I had to leave school in time to be on United Airlines Flight number 956 from Atlanta to Rochester, at 6:15 P . M.. The plane left the Atlanta Airport on the 6:15 p.m. schedule and arrived at the Rochester Airport in New York at 8:12 P .M. The next morning more than twenty representatives from schools for the deaf were accorded a fine welcome by the staff of NTID. The purpose of the trip was to participate in the first workshop sponsored by NTID for imparting information to individuals from secondary schools for the deaf in many parts of the United States. The workshop continued from the morning of December 1, through the afternoon of December 3.
The workshop consisted of tours of their facilities and conferences in which many problems and issues were discussed . All the time was used on school and personal problems common to deaf students seeking to become educated and trained for lifetime careers. The National Technical Institute for the Deaf was established because of the need for educational opportunities for the deaf in technical fields. The first students enrolled at NTID in 1968. The present plans are that a total of 750 students wil be enrolled when the buildings are completed. The hope is that these buildings will be ready in 1974.
NTID was established by an act of congress in 1965, and receives funds through the U.S . Departmemt of Health, Education and Welfare. The Rochester Institute of Technology is the sponsoring institute.
NTID Students who qualify may cross-register into the major programs of RIT. NTID students may take advantage of the cooperative
education plan, that is, students may spend one or more quarters working while getting postsecondary education. This is a great chance for the students to test out what they have learned in the classroom. A vestibule evaluation program is offered all newly enrolled students at N ID. i gra m g1ves the students a chance to improve in academic areas in which he may be weak. After the students has completed the vestibule program, he progresses to some program af technical education. NTID , through its link with RIT, offers deaf students the opportunity to persue studies for a certificate, diploma or associate degree in the sciences. Deaf students may enter the baccalaureate program. NTID has a complete program that includes research and training, communications center, interpretive services and counseling. It also has placement services for deaf graduates.
ADMISSIONS
Admission to NTID is based on each student's potential to finish a program of study which will give him the skills to get a good job.
The following rules for accepting students are:
1. The student should have attended a school or class for the deaf andj or needed special help because he is deaf.
2. The student mus t have a hearing loss that seriously limits his chances for success in a regular college or program for the hearing. There is general agreememt that an average hearing level of 60 decibels (ASA) or 70 decibels (ISO), or less, across the 500 to 2000 Hz range , is a major educational handicap.
3. The students must have an educational background that shows he is probably able to succeed in NTID study programs. Students will have an eighth grade educational level or above to be admitted.
4. Information from a student's references should suggest that he has the personal and social maturity to enter the type of programs
offered at NTID. Special attention is given to references from school principals, teachers, vocational rehabilitation counselors and others who are acquainted with the student.
5. The applicant must be a United States citizen, or a perma-
nent resident of the u.s.
6. Applicants now or previously
enrolled in other postsecondary educational programs or college, who wish to transfer to NTID, will be considered for admission only if one or both of the following conditions are met:
a. There is clear evidence that support services provided by NTID are necessary for his success and that these services arc not available in his present or former pro-
WORK TIME The 3-A Class is busy completing the follow-up activities to a story in their text book, "WORK TIME". This book provides interesting stories combined with functional activities to meet the .. needs of children in developing essential reading skills that should be taught at the third grade level. The teacher-aide, Miss Andrews, observes during the regular reading period and makes note of problem areas. Then she, during her schedule time with this class, gives the needed assistance to make pupil participation and comprehension higher for the next day's assignmemt.

he is or was enrolled, but the student is changing his educational objectives and the NTID program he wants is not offered there .
CHARGES AND FEES
The cost of attending the National Technical Institute for the Deaf includes tuition, room, board, and academic fees. Charges to students are equal to the average charges for attending other land-grant colleges and state universities throughout the country. :r'herefore, NTID charges are subJect to a slight change every year. The charges for the present academic year (191-72) are as follows: The eight-week Summer Vestibule program, including tuition, room and board-$356.00 The Fall Quarter, which includes tuition, room, board, four annual fees and one quarterly fee-$524.00 The Winter Quarter, which includes tuition, room, board, and one quarterly fee-$462.00 The Spring Quarter, which includes tuition, room, board and one quarterly fee-$462.00 The Summer Quarter, which includes tuition, room and board$437.00 The standard academic year includes the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. The trip ended on Saturday December 4. The plane , on flight number 265, lifted off the runway of the Rochester Airport on the 8.25 A.M . schedule in a light snow. A short time later the plane broke through heavy snow clouds into extremely bright sunlight The snow clouds under the wings seemed solid enough to walk on , but appeared to be very cold . Mr. John L. Caple, Supt.
Georgia School for the Deaf
Cave Spring, Georgia 30124
Dear Mr. Caple:
Probably you know about the
CAID Parent Section, especially if
you attended the meeting in Little
Rock this past June. But do the
parents of your students know a-
bout us?
Until Little Rock we were with-
out national officers and clearly
defined goals. Since that second
national meeting however, we are
fully launched and anxious to be of
service. We serve as a clearing
house for information, on an indi-
vidual basis, responding from our
home office, or by appropriate re-
ferrals. We look toward the emer-
gence of strong representation in
Washington, possibly a magazine
for parents of deaf children, and
the distribution of pertinent flim.
We expect to make The Endeavor
the most informative publication
ever offered parents of deaf child-
ren.
Now, as school opens, won't you
share this letter with the mothers
and fathers of your students? Let
them know that the Parents Sec-
tion of the CAID is finally on the
scene-established by parents, for
parents. We are dedicated to be-
coming one of the most effective
forces in the field to offer parent
information, bring needed improve-
ment in education, and to upgrade
the image of deaf people every-
where.
While we would like to have your
PTA join us as a group, we are
particularly interested in individ-
ual memberships. I have enclosed
a form indicating the different
membership categories. Please
share this letter with your parents.
They can write here for any addi-
tional information they may want.
Best wishes for a successful school
year.

TITLE I PROJECT
Since the onset of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, Title I, Public law 89-313, combined with the growth of the Departmemt of Special Education, Georgia State Departmemt of Education, we have been able to develop a program for deaf children of which we are very proud.
The current project consists of three activities designed to improve and expand educational services for the deaf children of Georgia. The Home Life and Services Program is a continuation of the program initiated last year and provides instruction in developing simple homemaking skills, care of clothing and personal hygiene . Emphases are on learning and practicing good manners , learning how to live with others , consideration of others , and in assuming responsibility.
The Language-Reading Activity continued from previous projects: employs twenty-one teacher aides who make available reading and language materials to reinforce learning. The aides help to better utilize the highly developed skills of teachers by assisting with much of the routine work. The aides also are involved with individual tutoring under teacher's direction.
The Physical Education-Recreation Program, a continuation of the program that began November 1, 1968, is designed to offer planned physical education and recreation activities as well as learning experiences for all deaf children who cannot go home on weekends . It offe1s a variety of activities geared to . the different age levels and is integrated with other curriculum areas.
OUR PETS
A friend of Mrs. Vann's gave four rabbits to the school last S e p te m b e r
The rabbits are named Mopsy, Flopsy, Cottontail and Peter. All four rabbits are pretty.
Mrs. Lawrie brought a hen to school, too. The hen's name is Bo Peep and she lays eggs.
We have another animal. It is a homing pigeon. We named him Tiny Tim because he is crippled. We don't know how he came to our school. Ma ybe he just flew by and found a better home with us. We can pick him up and pet him . He is not afraid of us.
We enjoy having pets outside our school building. Everyone is learning how to take care of our pets by sharing the responsibility of feedin g and watering them daily.
Our next project will be to build a pigeon house for Tiny Tim .
Mrs. Stepp's Class
G. A. E. Officers
Elected for 1971-72
The officers of the Georgia Association of Educators of the Georgia School for the Deaf for the year 1971-72 are : Mr s. Sammie Glover President; Miss Ruby Hewett, Vice President; Mrs. Louise Chubbs, Secretary; and Mr. Ed Steele, Treasurer.
The officers and committee chairmen met with Mr. Glenn Usom, area F ield Representative, to discuss their duties and ways to improve the local G. A. E .
Mrs. Glover and Miss Hewett attended the President's conclave where problems and new ideas were discussed.
Mrs. Glover attended a meeting in Atlanta that was both informative and helpful.
Our offi cers and chairmen are ready and eager to work for better educational standards so that the deaf child ren of Georgia will be better prepared for the future.
MARCEL
MARCEAU
Three students from Mr. Ziegler's homeroom, along with some of the high school students, attended the performance of Marcel Mareau on November 21 at the Atlanta Civic Center as guests of Mr. Lee Friedman.
Marcel Marceau acts without his voice , sign language, or speech. He uses a variety of body gestures.
Pierre Verry, Marcel Mareau's Presentor of Cards, introduced each act to the audience.
Marcel wore a white costume throughout the entire show, except for one scene. During that scene he wore a sailor's uniform.
In 1945 Marcel Marceau became a student of Charles Dullin at his School of Dramatic Art in Paris. In 1947 he created Bip, his own tradema rk. In 1948 he received the Deburau P rize for his mimodrama 'Death Before Dawn". In 1949 he formed his own company, Compagnie de Mime Marcel Marceau. In 1955 he received an Emmy Award for his performance on the Max Liebman's NBC Spectacular. Since 1965 Marcel has toured the world. He has returned to the United States for a coast to coast tour during 1971-1972.
The performance was very interesting and rewarding.
Self-Discovery Activity
On Monday, December 6, the seventh grade class in earth Science conducted a self-discovery activity in the classroom . The title of the activity was, "Making A CRYSTAL GARDEN." The materials used for this activity were water, pot, beaker, teaspoon, pencil, string, bunsen burner and copper sulfate.
We boiled a cup of water in a pot, and put about 5 teaspoonful of copper sulfate into the water, we mixed the water and copper sulfate until it was dissolve . We had a saturated solution. After the solution had cooled. we tied a string around a pencil, poured the solution into the beaker and put the pencil across the top of the beaker so that the string was suspended into the liquid. The beaker was placed on the laboratory table, and by Wednesday we had a beaker of small copper sulfate crystals clustered around the string.

OTHER EDITORS To this desk from a local contributor comes a scrapbook item written by the late, great Dr. Albert Schweitzer on the importance of cheerfulness in daily living. He put it this way: -Of all the virtures, cheerfulness is the most profitable. -It makes the person who ex ercises it happy and renders him acceptable to everyone he meets. -Cheerfulness puts the Ileart in tune with life. Age preserves itself inan easy and cheerful frame of mind. -Cheerfulness ought to be an important part in a person's daily living . -It gives perpetual youth. -None ever decry play and fun but those who are strangers to their value, and the love of them is one of the signs of a great nature. -All true genius is, in its very essence, a joyous faculty. Wit originally signified the highest effort of mind. It is only by looking around, as well as upwards, that a large and just concept of life is attainable, and therefore that life is truly realized. -A mind charged with vitality and sustained by cheerfulness will not only look cheerfully to the goal of its pilgrimage, but have ample amounts of gladness to extend on the journey. People who are always cheerful are very useful in this world, the distinguished Dr. Schweitzer concluded, because they maintain 'peace and happiness and are spiritually alive. All of us can benefit by remembering his sound philosophy in our daily living. -Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger.
