Foreword
It is said that one picture is equal to a thousand
words Think of the transferred knowledge from picture
to student when a teaching film is shown in the class
room of a school Multiply this one classroom of stu
dents by the hundreds who view such films each day and
you realize the vast knowledge that is imparted and the
value of visually bringing the world into the classroom
There are some 5100 film titles in this Georgia
State Department of Education Catalog films which are
available at your request The teaching film is just
one of many kinds of audiovisual aids available to
teachers to make their teaching come alive for the stu
dent
Most children have inquisitive minds They want to
learn Every avenue available to a teacher to impart
this knowledge to answer these questions should be
utilized The teaching film is one way of doing this
It is my sincere hope that you will continue to
utilize this service of the State Department of Educa
tion The best film library is an empty one that is
one where films are being requested and circulated rath
er than collecting dust on storage shelves Help us
keep our films dustfree and by so doing help your
self to a better teaching method and your students to
a new insight into the world they live in

TO GEORGIAS SCHOOL LEADERS AND CLASSROOM TEACHERS
Every effort is being made to screen select and
categorize films in order that each area of the curriculum
in the schools of Georgia is covered Evaluation of the films
now owned by the State is also being continued Older films
which have been revised are being exchanged for newer editions
Films which are no longer requested by the schools are being
examined for future use or discontinuation In summary the
AudioVisual Unit is attempting to keep films in the collection
which are applicable and useable
Films which are selected carefully and used properly
present information to the students which teachers cannot pos
sibly do in such a dramatic way The information also may not
be possible to present to students in any other way The pres
sure of time and the content to be covered necessitates careful
selection of the films Thus teaching by film is just another
means of presenting information to the students As with any
other single method the usage of film requires its falling into
a total plan of organizing for learning No one means of teach
ing can do the job effectively for the teacher must have an
overall plan
Your assistance cooperation and suggestions in making
the Film Library of the State of Georgia adequate and useable
are sincerely desired

August 1967REGISTERING YOUR SCHOOL
Films are furnished free to the Public Schools of Georgia with the exception of a 2500 registration fee per
school year after January 15 of each year the fee is only 1250 which is used to purchase insurance on the materi
al Films are also furnished to any school related group such as the PTA Athletic Club 4H Club or Home Eco
nomics Club provided the School is registered Films are not available to individuals or private institutions
Principals should fill in Form AV1 Registration for Film Service appoint a film coordinator and mail
this form to one of the three Film Libraries serving Georgia Consult Location of Film Libraries on page D of this
cataloq Forms for requesting films AV2 are furnished by this Division and all requests must be made on these forms
DUTIES OF THE FILM COORDINATOR
Briefly it will be the duty of the Film Coordinator to
1 Prepare all requests for films typing or printing only see detailed instructions
2 Receive and distribute the material to the teacher using it
3 Assist teachers with equipment see that the material is previewed and properly used
4 Assemble the material and return to the Film Library the afternoon of the last play date films are booked
for two davs use and in no case later than the following morning
5 Make requests for films for use on special occasions use regular request blanks explaining what the films
are to be used for
6 Make arrangements with the principal for time off in order to properly handle the audiovisual program
DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR COORDINATORS
TO Principals and Coordinators
Please read and have a thorough understanding of these instructions before registering your schools Such an
understanding of the film service will avoid useless delays
1 Register your school according to Form AV1 with the film library serving your area The current quota of
films per registration is seven per week You may elect to receive fourteen per week for 5000 if your student
enrollment exceeds 500 For additional quotas consult your library
2 All requests must be made by the appointed coordinator using Form AV2 Requests are to be typed or printed
and to include coordinators name full school address zip code and school holidays Your film library will
be glad to furnish blanks on request Do not run out of request blanks
3 All film requests are to be made and submitted on a monthly basis and 30 days in advance September and Octo
ber requests should be made together Requests may be made on a semester basis if desired Do not send your
first request before preplanning week
4 To insure the receipt of a fair number of films please submit a supplementary list similar to the
original Thus if your original is not available a substitute will be made for the same number film on the
supplement Film Libraries will not schedule films at any date available without school consent
5 If you register after the beginning of the school year allow at least ten days between the time your monthly
request is mailed and first date wanted Then proceed for remainder of the month and include the following
months order
6 Special orders will be honored for an occasional film for school related or outside groups providing the name
of the group and exact date is given List a second and third choice
7 Always give correct titles and catalog numbers for each film Do not mix the dates on your monthly request
Follow a progressive date sequence from week to week
8 Follow the instructions on the white confirmation sheet if it is necessary to cancel films prior to shipping
date
9 Inspect returning film cases to prevent the following
1 Films in wrong cans
2 Films in wrong cases
3 Films rewound
4 Films on plastic or hubtype reels
5 Films on wrong size reels
10 Each film is sealed with an inspection seal If this seal is broken but film not used it is considered a11 DO NOT REWIND FILMS after showing Rewind films only when you are ready to reuse them Returning films re
wound can cause suspension of service
12 FILM DAMAGE is normally caused by inexperience and carelessness Avoid this by requesting practice reels of
film available for projector training
13 Never use any type of tape for repairing a broken film Instead run off about three feet of film wrap
around the film on the takeup reel and continue projection
14 Make arrangements with someone else to handle your AV duties while you are away from school
15 Contact your film library as soon as possible about irregular service to your school
HOW TO USE THIS CATALOG
Films are listed alphabetically Under the alphabetical listing a description of each film is given Those
producers marked with an asterisk at the end of film descriptions will provide teachers guides for that film upon
request
When asking for films to be reserved the title and catalog number should be given The catalog number follows
the title Do not write in the other spaces
If there are substitute requests that you can use in case some of your first choices are not available we sugqest
that you make up a supplementary request for films Use additional request blanks and mark them SUPPLEMENTARY or SECOND
CHOICE
After your requests are received we will book and confirm to you the time that it will be possible to ship the
films to you Users can be assured that the library will do everything possible to send films on dates wanted ana if
this is not possible then they will be sent the nearest available date Teachers will realize that our situation is
not unlike that of the school librarian When a new book arrives there may be ten students who want to read the book
the same week The only way ten students can read the new book is for it to be reserved for them at later dates
Fuller information on the use and projection of films may be found in Catalog No 8
NOTICE
In order to clear up any questions about the booking of Christmas films we would like to state this as a policy
In order to serve as many schools as possible with the Christmas films that we have available schools should request
only one Christmas film with a second choice between Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays In order to serve as
many schools as possible some requests for Christmas films will be filled early and some later If it is not pos
sible for us to book a Christmas film for your school please do not be disappointed because we cannot purchase
enough of this seasonal material to supply the demand It would be well for each school to purchase these inexpensive
films in order to have them on hand Seasonal material should be in all local film libraries

Chemical Families sh Color
Starting with a display of actual samples of over 70 elements the film demonstrates methods by which chemical
similarities among the elements have provided the basis for dividing them logically into families By experiment
and observation the elements are classified as metals or nonmetals and some are found to be difficult to clas
sify Experimentally it is shown that under the same conditions some gases are chemically reactive while others
are inert The fact that elements with atomic numbers one less and one more than the atomic numbers of the inert
gases are highly reactive provides the clue for finding the halogen and alkali metal families The film demon
strates how atomic numbers have provided the key to the ordering of the elements in the periodic table A suffix
to the film demonstrates a recently discovered reaction between xenon and fluorineMLA

GASES AND GAS LAWS
Introduction to Gas Behavior
The assumptions of the kineticmolecular theory result in
experimental behavior of gases
Gas Pressures Oriqin and Measurement 49019 30 min
The variables used for gases are reviewed but in this lesson pressure and its relation to the number of moles
volume and temperature being kept constant will be studied particularly A mercury barometer is shown A
manometer is shown and compared with the barometer
Partial Pressures Boyles Law 49020 30 min
The students are given a problem in partial pressures to solve The pressure unit the atmosphere is de
fined The variation of pressure with volume at constant temperature and number of moles is discussed
Some data are obtained experimentally
The Gas Temperature Scale Absolute Zero 49021 3J
The pressure at 100 C is read for a constant number of moles of a gas at constant volume The qas is then

Water is one of the most extraordinary substances known
its slow rate of evaporation its high surface tension its power of solution and the fact that it is heavier
in the liauid than the solid form The water molecule is made of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen held
together by electrical forces One end of the water molecule is positively charged and the other end is negatively
charged The positive end of one water molecule can be attracted and attached to the negative end of another
forming a hydrogen bond These bonds are continually being made and broken at room temperature resulting in
fluidity Hydrogen bonds account for most of waters unusual propertiesFA32
