2007-2008 ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS
WHAT IS ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS? Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP is the formula used
to determine if schools and school systems are meeting standards. It is required under the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. It consists of three parts:
Participation in Reading/English Language Arts and Math Tests Academic Performance in Reading/English Language Arts and Math A "Second Indicator," which is graduation rate in high school and usually attendance in elementary and middle school.
DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS have made AYP for at least
three years in a row.
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT (NI) SCHOOLS have not
made AYP for at least two consecutive years in the same subject and receive additional support to make improvement.
NI SCHOOLS ARE NOT NECESSARILY "FAILING" SCHOOLS:
Often times schools may have missed making AYP because of the performance of a single subgroup of students. Make sure you know why a school missed AYP!
WHAT'S GEORGIA DOING TO IMPROVE NI SCHOOLS? GaDOE's SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT DIVISION puts
Leadership Facilitators in schools and school systems to help schools get out of NI status. These Leadership Facilitators use research-based methods and best practices that are working elsewhere and are sharing those with all schools.
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? GET INFORMED: If your school did not make AYP, learn
why.
GET INVOLVED: Offer to be a mentor or a partner with
your local school and help them improve.
