LIB RA_R I ES OF GE0RG\N
COMMISSIONER ' S MESSAGE
It is a pleasure for me, in this message accompanying the 1960 State Farmers' Markets Annual Sales Report, to point to the outstanding progress Georgia is making in the field of marketing through our state farmers' markets.
Again in 1960 all previous sales records were broken. Total gross sales of ? 83,646,157 on markets last year topped the 1959 figure by more than seven million dollars.
PHIL CAMPBELL
Much of this growth can be attributed to the fact that a larger variety of products was sold on most of our markets than in previous years. A larger variety of packaging units to meet the demands of buyers also added to the progress.
Most of our markets reported better price averages than in the past years and a decided improvement in the quality of produce sold in Georgia. There was also evidence of a greater interest in grading, This was especially true on the Blue Ridge Market in regard to apples where packing and grading brought up the over all sales and price averages.
A great deal of credit for the continued progress on our markets should go to the market managers and personnel,, Their enthusiastic cooperation in improving the efficiency and appearance of the markets has certainly added to the growth of our markets.
And so it is with pleasure that I invite your inspection of our facilities as well as your purchase of the fine quality products offered through our state farmers' markets. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many buyers, dealers and producers who patronized our markets last year and invite their continued use of our facilities in tne future.
PHIL CAMPBELL^ Commissioner of Agr/culture

SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT HAS BEEN ADDED
Important in Georgia is the gradual increase in production of Sweet Potatoes. In 1956 a grower organization was organized in the Americus area and a Sweet Potato Curing House was constructed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. This house was equipped with grading and packaging equipment making it possible for the growers to market high quality Sweet Potatoes in sufficient volume to attract volume buyers.
In 1960 three more such houses were constructed and equipped at Pitts, Ocilla and Statesboro. Each house has a storage capacity of 36,000 bushels. In addition grading equipment was provided on the Cairo State Farmers' Market.
Each Sweet Potato marketing area has a grower's association which directs the operation of the storage houses and the marketing of the potatoes. A manager for each of the operations is provided by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and he cooperates with the local growers and assists in any way he can towards a successful marketing of their products.
The five grower associations have formed a central sales organization making it possible to increase available volume at uniform grade and price. A marketing specialist has been assigned from the Georgia Department of Agriculture to work with the central sales organization to improve the marketing of Georgia Sweet Potatoes.
