LIBRARIES OF GEORGIA
A MESSAGE FROM OUR COMMISSIONER
The year 1959 was a record year on most of our farmers' Markets.
Not only were total sales records shattered in many instances but more commodities were sold and more people visited our state markets than at any time since the establishment of the first of these facilities many years ago.
Total gross sales on state farm markets during 1959 exceeded the total sales of the previous year by more than $8 million.
And the continued growth of business on our state farm markets was adequately reflected in the physical improvements added to our marketing system.
High point of the past year was the official opening and dedication of the new $10 million Atlanta State Farmers' Market south of Atlanta. Serving as the world's finest farmers market as well as a hub for the Southeast's progressive produce industry, this market will play an increasingly important role in feeding our growing population.
Access roads to the new Atlanta market facility are now virtually complete thus removing the traffic bottleneck that existed during most of 1959. Also scheduled for completion soon is a perimeter road that will enable trucks from all points to move onto the Atlanta market without envading the busy downtown section of the metropolitan area.
In keeping with our progress in physical facilities has been the steadily increasing flow of quality fruits and vegetables through our state markets. Through our marketing laws and regulations buyers are assured of quality produce when they buy on our markets.
It is indeed a pleasure to point to the progress we are making in the field of marketing and invite your inspection of our facilities as well as your purchase of the fine products offered you through these facilities.
Phil Campbell Commissioner of Agriculture
ATLANTA STATE FARMERS' MARKET
The new Atlanta Farmers' market is a $10,000,000 monument to Georgia's agriculture and produce industry.
Sitting on 146 acres 10 miles south of Atlanta on U. S. Highways 19 and 41, the sprawling market serves not only the fruit and vegetable growers of Georgia but serves also as a hub for the entire produce industry of the Southeastern United States.
Gross sales of produce on the market in 1959 totaled $42,673,082, almost a three million dollar increase over 1958.
Described as the finest facility of its kind in the world, the market has a total of 16 double farmer sheds which provides 122,900 square feet of covered loading and unloading space. The dock area provides 1,088 ten-foot wide sales spaces.
Nine dealers' buildings provide 559,000 square feet of enclosed space and dock area, approximately half of which is refrigerated. Six of the dealers' buildings are served by rail facilities.
There is also a hamper house, a cannery and a service station to service cars and trucks. Two large air-conditioned restaurants are open day and night for farmers and patrons, while an administration building houses a barber shop, meeting rooms, market information and food inspection services, as well as offices for food brokers and management.
Expressway is still under construction. Signs are posted on the Expressway showing temporary route to the new market and will be maintained until overpass and access road is completed. Information may be obtained by calling PCplar 7-9^81-2-3 and Jackson ^4--3292 - Ext. 2k6
