The predominant movement of broilers from producing areas to consuming areas is
northward except from Maine but important quantities also move westward to the
Pacific Coast States The westward movement of broilers is the reverse of the
predominant turkey traffic which is from the western States to northeastern centers
of population
FACTS ABOUT GEORGIA POULTRY
In May 1947 and again in May 1950 the Georgia Crop Reporting Service issued a
phed report on facts about Georgia poultry The figures contained therein were
piled in the interest of egg and poultry producers and others benefiting directly or indir
ectly from the various phases of the poultry industry Widespread demand for the release
and for more recent figures has led to a more complete and uptodate report

For this Project State funds were matched with Federal funds received from the Agricultural
Marketing Service USDA under Provisions of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946GROWTH OF THE POULTRY ENTERPRISE 3
The production of poultry and poultry products has increased rapidly in Georgia since
the mid1940s due primarily to the growth of the broiler industry The broiler industry began
in Georgia prior to World War II and received some impetus from the demands for meat during
the war but did not really come into its own until the late 40s Since that time it has increased
phenomenally and has led the poultry enterprise to new heights With the growth of the com
mercial broiler industry there has been a decline in the farm chicken enterprise Some farms
have eliminated the chicken enterprise entirely depending on the specialized growers of broil
ers and producers of eggs to supply their needs The chart below shows the gross income
including home consumption of each segment of the poultry enterprise

EGG PRODUCTION
Egg production in Georgia is closely coordinated with the broiler industry as a consid
erable number of eggs are produced for hatching into broiler chicks Number of hens and
pulletson farms January 1 reached a peak in 1944 but with the development of layers with
better production number declined for several years while total production continued to rise
The 197 eggs per layer obtained in 1957 is almost double the 101 eggs per layer in 1940
Cash farm receipts in 1957 for the sale of eggs of 41 941 000 is about 8 times the
4 950 000 received in 1940 This increase is caused not only by the doubled production per
hen but by the more than doubling in price per dozen eggs

FEED PRICE RATIOS IN GEORGIA
17
Feed cost contributes more to the cash cost of producing poultry and eggs than does
any other item Therefore the relation that exists between the cost of feed and the price of
the finished product is very important to the poultryman as an aid in planning the enterprise
In the following tables this relationship is shown in ratios which are expressed in terms of
the number of pounds of poultry feed which are equal in value to that of a dozen eggs or a
pound of live weight poultry A high ratio is the more favorable to poultrymen since this
indicates that the value of his product is higher in relationship to his feed cost than would be
the case with a low ratio
