Georgia 's HOPE Scholarship Program: A History
Former Governor Zell Miller, now a U .S. Senator from Georgia, founded Georgia 's HOPE Schola rship Program in September 1993.
Governor Miller created HOPE to increase academ ic achievement , keep Georgia 's best and bright est students in Georgia , and expa nd educational
opportunities beyond high school to all Georgians.
Funded entirely by the G eorgia Lottery , more than 500,000 Georgia students have earned HOPE Schol arships to over 100 colleges, un iversities , and technical colleges across the stat e.

HOPE Can HelpYou Get the Education You Want.
HO PE - Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationallyis Georgia's uniqu e scholarship program that rewards students' hard work with financial assistance in degree, diploma , an d certificate program s at any eligible Georgia publi c or private college, university, or public technical college. Since the program began in 1993, over 500,000 Georgian s have received more than $1.2 billion through the HOPE Scholarship Prog ram, which is funded by the Georgia Lottery for Educat ion.
You can benefit from HOPE in several ways . If you wish to enro ll in a degree program at a Ge orgia public college, un iversity, or techn ical college, you may be eligible for financial assistance covering tuition , HOP Eapprove d mand atory fees, and a book allowance.
If you wish to enro ll in a Georgia private college, you may be eligible for a $3,000 annua l scholarship for tuition and mand atory fees. You may also receive financial assistance for non -degree program s at an y Georgia public technical college. Other HO PE assista nce is available for G ED recipient s.

HOPE also provides scho larship funds to assist teachers and indiv iduals who wan t to earn an education degree and teach in Georgia public schoo ls. Th ese program s include the PROMISE Teac her Scholarship for und ergradu ate study, the HOPE Teac her Scholarship for graduate study, and the PROMISE II Teacher Schol arship for teach er paraprofessionals or instructional aides who worked in Georgia publ ic schoo ls dur ing the 1999-2000 schoo l year and are seeking a baccalaur eate degree in educ ation . HOPE for Students Attending a Georgia Public College or University.
If you wish to enro ll in a degree program as an entering freshma n at a Georgia public college or univ ersity, you mu st have the following qualifications:
Be a U . S. citizen or eligible non-citizen for Title IV fund s.
M eet HOPE 's Georgia residency requirements.

Meet the Selective Service registration requireme nts .
Be a 1993 or later graduate of an eligible high schoo l.
Earn a "B" average in the core curriculum (a 3.0 cumulativegradepoint average on a 4.0 scale, or 80 numericgrade average, meeting the collegepreparatory
trackrequirements; ifyou are in the technicalcurricu-
lum track, you must havea 3.2 cumulativegradepoint average on a 4.0 scale, or 85 numericgrade average, meeting the curriculum requirements), as follows:

You may receive first-year HOPE assistance for the first 30 semester hours attempted at any Georgia public college or universit y. This includes tuition , HOPE-approved mandatory fees, and a book allowance up to $150 per semester. Full-time enrollment is not required .
You may renew the scholarship for your sophomore, junior , and senior years . To do so , you must:
Maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for all coursework attempted (not just coursework co mpleted ).
Reappl y for the scholarship by completing the Free Application for Federal Stud ent Aid (FAFSA), the HOPE Applicatio n, or e-HOPE (electronic application). You can access e-HOPE at www.gsfc .org/ehope.
Be making satisfactory aca demic progress .
College hours and grades attempted prior to high school grad uation are not used in calculating your total attempted hours and cumulative grade point average to renew HO PE .

Two Opportunities for Students to Regain HOPE: The HOPE Scholarship is a reward for scholastic achievement and an incentive to continue working hard in school. If after attempting 30 semester hours at a public college you fall below a 3.0 cum ulative grade point average , you may continue your college studies at your own expense. If you then earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at the completion of your sophomore year (60semesterhoursattempted)or your junior year (90semesterhoursattempted), you may reenter the HOPE Scholarship Program. HOPE for Public College Students Who Were Ineligible as Entering Freshmen: If you graduated from high school before the HOPE program began in 1993, or if you were not academically eligible imm ediately after high schoo l grad uatio n, you may be eligible for a H OPE Scholarship after attempting 30, 60, or 90 semester hour s of study if yo u have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average . HOPE for Technical Certificate or Diploma Programs at a Georgia Public College: Students seeking a technical certificate or diploma at a Georgia public college must meet the qua lifications for students seeking a technical certificate or diploma at a Georgia public technical college . Certificate programs offered through the Continuing Education Department of a Georgia public college do not qualify for HOPE assistance .

HOPE for Private College Students Who Were Ineligible as Entering Freshmen:

If you are a non-traditi on al stude nt or were not eligible for a HOPE Sch olarship immed iately after high schoo l gra duation, you may be eligible for a HOPE Sch ola rship afte r att empting 30 semester (45 quarter) hours, 60 semester (90 quarter) hours, or 90 semester (/35 quarter) hours o f study if you ha ve a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
In addit ion to the HOP E Scholarship, you may be eligible for the G eorgia Tu ition Eq ua liza tio n G rant of $1,100 per aca de mic year. Yo u must conti nue to be a full-tim e stude nt (/2 hours) maki ng satisfac tory academic progress.

~ HOPE for Students Attending a ,... Georgia Public Technical College
Georgia residents who are attending a Georgia public technical college to earn a certificate or diploma are eligible for HOPE assistance regardless of high school graduation date or grade point average . The HOPE Grant covers tuition , HOPE-approved mandatory fees, and a book allowance of up to $100 per quarter.
Full-time enrollment is not required , but you must be making satisfactory academic progress to maintain eligibility . NOTE: Studentsseeking degrees at Georgia publictechnical colleges must meet the qualifications for studentsseeking degrees at Georgia 'spubliccolleges and universities.
, HOPE for QED Recipients at a Georgia Postsecondary Institution.
Legal residents of Georgia who earned a General Education Development (high school equivalency) diploma awarded by the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education after June 30, 1993 may receive a one-time $500 HOPE award . This award can be used toward tuition, books, and other educational costs at an eligible public technical college or public or private college or university in a degree, diploma, or certificate program.
Full-time enrollment is not required . Students must use their HOPE eligibility within 24 months of the date of the GED diploma . Military personnel have 52 months to exercise eligibility.
In addition to the $500 award, GED recipients may also qualify for assistance through other components of HOPE.

HOPE Scholarship Award Limits.
Regardless of the funding source, once a degreeseeking student has attempted 127 semester (190 quarter) hours of degree credit or has earned a bacca laureate (four-year) degree , the student is no longer eligible for the HOPE Scholarship.
How to Apply for HOPE.
Just follow these steps : Students planning to attend a public college,
university, or technical college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the HOPE Application, or e-HOPE (electronic application). These forms are available at all eligible Georgia pub lic postsecondary institutions. You can access e-HOPE at www.gsfc .org/ehope. Some colleges and technical colleges also require the student to complete the school's financial aid application. Contact the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend . Students planning to attend an eligible private college or university must complete the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant Application. These forms are available at all eligible Georgia private colleges and universities. The deadline to apply for HOPE for the 2001-2002 award year (Summer Term 2001 through Spring Term 2002) is the end of Spring Term 2002. You must complete the application process through the institution's financial aid office before the end of Spring Term 2002 or by any earlier deadline date established by the postsecondary institution.
