Question: When must the information required by 395.8 of the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations be recorded on the Driver's Record of Duty Status (Log Book)?

Response: Each item is required on the Record of Duty Status is listed below, followed by a brief explanation of when the information should be recorded or entered.

Date: Entered when the driver first comes on duty for that day

Total Miles Driven Today: Entered at the end of the driver's work day

Truck or Tractor Trailer Number: Entered just prior to operating the vehicle

Name of Motor Carrier: Entered when the driver first comes on duty for that day. May be preprinted.

Main Office Address: Entered when the driver first comes on duty for that day. May be preprinted.

Remarks: Entered whenever an event occurs that requires an entry in the "remarks" secton, such as the location of a change of duty status
Name of Co-driver: Entered as soon as the name of the co-driver is known (prior to the start of driving opeations). The co-driver must have his own separate record of duty status.

Total hours: Computed and entered at the end of the driver's work day.

Shipping Document Number(s) or Name of Shipper & Commodity: Entered at the time the trip is assigned to the driver, or at the staJ.t of the work day, whichever occurs first.
