Don't Overload ... Your Tires!
Just The Facts--Tire Load Safety Limits
Section 393.75(f) of the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations states:
"Tire loading restrictions. No motor vehicle . . . shall be operated with tires that carry a weight greater than that marked on the sidewall of the tire . . ."
Overloading can result in unanticipated tire failure and constitutes a major safety hazard. Consequently, CVSA North American Standard Out of Service Criteria declares situations where the "Weight carried exceeds the tire load limit" an out-of-service condition (unless operated under a special permit).
This regulation is not new; it has been in effect for at least 20 years.
Operators should purchase tires with sufficient load ratings to support the loads they anticipate transporting. It is most common for steering axle tires to become overloaded unless properly rated tires are installed.

Tire load ratings can be found on the tire sidewall. In the example at left, two of these tires can legally carry 12,350 lbs. on one axle. Four of the tires shown can legally carry 22,700 lbs. on one axle.
