Overview
MISSION To provide offenders opportunities for positive change using principles of effective intervention and evidence-based programs to promote successful offender reentry, compliance, safe communities and stable families.
The division focuses on the transition of the offender by providing effective opportunities for the offender to achieve positive change and to be a more pro-social contributor to society The transition process starts at the earliest point of entry into the correctional system. The offender is assessed and evidence based programming is assigned to assist in the positive change
GOALS Increase public safety by implementing research-based interventions that increase the offender's chance of staying crime-free Decrease the growth of the prison and probation population by implementing intervention strategies that reduce recidivism (reconviction rates) Implement programs that support restitution (paying back), restoration and rehabilitation through proper assessment Promote public safety through collaborative partnerships that support offender transition into the community
IMPACT Statistically, 1 in 31 adults nationwide is under some type of supervision, such as jail/prison, probation or parole In Georgia, 1 in 13 citizens are under some type of supervision, making Georgia the fourth largest prison system in the country and first largest per capita Though 95% of offenders return to society, within three years 26.6% will return to prison with new charges. COMMUNITY REENTRY Optimizes the services provided with external stakeholders and service providers in order to impact reduction on return admissions to jails, prisons and community supervision to promote Justice Reinvestment:
GDC enhances collaborative efforts through the development and implementation of new ways to measure success and failures, thus reducing barriers to offender reentry
